Welcome to all the new players!

If you're just joining us in the full game, you will probably wish to update your copy to the latest version when you start playing.

To check for new updates, go to the options screen and select 'Updater', then 'Check for Updates'. You'll need to be connected to the internet when you do this, because it will try to access our website to look for any new patches that are available. Patches marked stable will be displayed by default. (There aren't any at the moment, there may be in the future.)

You can also tick the option to display Beta patches. Beta patches are the newest version that we have tested. Alpha patches are currently being tested, you probably don't want those.

When you first try to download an update, you will be prompted to input your license key. This is the key you received in your download email. You'll only need to type it in once; the game will remember after that.

After any new patches are downloaded the game will automatically restart.

I just bought this game, and I have version 1.0.9, which I'm sure is the latest version, but I wanted to try the updater to see whatever beta versions were available. Do I need to do something to use the updater? When I click "Check for Updates", I get this:

An error occurred trying to get the latest update list: UpdateException("Could not download 'http://updates.spikycaterpillar.com/magical_diary/latest':URLError(error(10013, 'An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions'),)'',)

I already tried disabling my anti-virus and making sure the program had access to the internet in Windows Firewall (I am using Windows 7).

That's a little odd. Does it happen every time you try to check for updates? What does going to http://updates.spikycaterpillar.com/magical_diary/latest in a web browser show you?

Have you tried entering the key you got by buying it? Because I first got an error too, then I entered the key/code and it worked, so maybe that is the problem?

Yes, it happens every time I try to update. I don't see anywhere to enter my code...I think it doesn't even get to the point where it would ask for it. I tried entering it into the python console just for the heck of it and it didn't do anything. I can view the file at http://updates.spikycaterpillar.com/magical_diary/latest, it says, "stable 1.0.9 ". I can also see the index at http://updates.spikycaterpillar.com/magical_diary/.

I am getting this same exact problem actually. I played the demo first and I don't see a place to enter my key and such, I just purchased this tonight and it worries me a lot. I would really like to check for updates and for future ones.

Update: I think I may have figured it out. After I uninstalled the retail (demo already uninstalled) then went to where the save files are located from the other topic Save file location and hi im new :3 and deleted that folder it seemed to work. I get the option to 'Reset to 1.0.9' and the option for my license key pops up. I hope that solved it. If not I believe I will, as well as the person/people above me, have the same problem still.

What OS version were you using? Demo saves do work with the full version. If your operating system was doing something weird for some users and not others, it might have been protecting the folder somehow, but it is also possible your problem was something completely different that coincidentally resolved at that time. I would not recommend that people delete folders.

I've got a test installer that may fix the problem (it will prompt for registration keys in a couple more places if the key isn't set) - if anyone else is encountering this problem, PM me a copy of your receipt and I'll send you a link to the 1.0.13 installer.

I'm going to send you a PM to try the new installer, and see if that helps. I would like to use my saves from the demo if possible. I haven't actually played past where I quit in the demo yet.

Well a new problem has arose. I tried to get the beta version but [mod edit to remove huge image, which was displaying the message that it couldn't reach the site to download patches.]

Now I can't access http://updates.spikycaterpillar.com/magical_diary/latest as well.

If you can't access the site that means there's a connection problem between you and the site, nothing to do with the game. Overloaded networks come and go; try again in a few minutes.

If the network is lagging it can't download patches.

I apologize for the big size of the picture, I shall provide a link next time. i have successfully updated to the beta version so all things seem to be a go. I'm also curious what exactly is going to be changed in 1.0.12 though as I don't see any patch notes/info.

No, absolutely nothing interesting has been added or else I would have announced it.

Minor bugfixes, typoes, and some tweaks to the updater system. No new content, no changes that anyone is likely to notice at all.

There is content coming eventually, including a strategy guide, but not yet. They will be announced on the forum when they're ready.

Ahh, neato! Then I suppose it will be okay to play with that version then? I was tempted to revert back to 1.0.9 to be on the safe side.

Sorry couldn't resist. XD What content will you be adding? More romanceables and/or events? Oooh like and expansion/DLC? I know for one I would like to romance a werewolf like that cutie purple one I saw or even the mono-gendered reminded me of Asari from Mass Effect.

Sure! I think alot of ppl on here would love a guide of some sort- including myself. I could definitely try but I'm not sure how I would begin to structure the content... Just think about it. How do you present a guide to a game that branches into 100s of possible events (even if I did know the game inside out.)

I don't know. Maybe I'm thinking too much into it.

Anywayz, I'm definitely up for the challenge. I could post it sooner if I label it more as a 'work-in-progress' and invite ppl to add their own content. It'll be fun- like a guide put together by the Magical Diary community :3 Go team Magical Diary!

Speaking of user-made guides, at least two different people have tried to start wikis, which are probably the best place to share complex things like this outside of the game itself.

I don't know if either of them is active though.
