Yandere in boys

Yandere in boys

#1 by hanako - Jul 13 2008

As I understand it, the concept of a 'yandere' character is one who is sweet and quiet and loving, until you betray them (generally by dating them and then dating someone else) and then they go crazy and attack you with extreme violence.

These characters are generally girls. And some people find them really cute.

Would anyone want such a character as a datable boy?

(This is NOT a question for any of the games previously mentioned as being in development here. This is mostly curiosity.)

Extreme violence...? Just make me think he's crazy.

I think it's normal if the character reacts like that. Like, you were kind, loving, everything, but this girl leads you on and date someone else so it's obvious you go berserk. Just...not violence. It'd be nice if it's more believable. I'd like a character like that if he is.

Maybe when he finds out you're dating another person and when you go cheerfully to him to try to date HIM, he'd start yelling berserk at you and slam the door in your face and ignore you from then on. And he could hurt you by spreading what you did around so that others will dislike you as well, but he thinks it's right for him to tell other people about you.

But violence...actual violence? If he did, I wouldn't want him anyway. That's not cute. Not even with girls. Maybe because guys think that girls wouldn't be able to hurt them so it's just a "threat" and it means she really cares about him, so they think it's cute. It's not. It's obsessive and violent and not cute even if it's a girl or a guy.

I like my version of a yandere guy a lot better. And to date him again....well, I have some ideas about that too, like it was a misunderstanding, he's actually too possessive or touchy or insecure, or you weren't sure you were giving him that "I like you" message or YOU were wrong and thought you'd have fun because he was so nice you didn't think he'd swallow it, but you realize it's no joke and he's serious but not step-on status and you were immature. He'd realize he's wrong for spreading it around without listening to you....ect. There's lots of ways. Bottom line, I like the idea of a normal, cute, down-to-earth guy who has his own problems which made him react the way he did. But no stereotypes and no actual violence or I'd be scared.

When I said 'extreme' violence, I meant it that way... these characters in games (aimed at male players) tend to get very large knives and brutally murder the cheating PC, the person the PC cheated with, anyone else who gets in their way, and sometimes themselves as well - BAD END.

I'm not really sure why this is 'cute'. The best explanation I've gotten from a yandere fan is that it shows their extreme passion, so as long as you don't betray the girl, you have a wonderful relationship.

Or maybe they like the thrill of danger of knowing that the girl could snap.

Or maybe they just feel that they deserved to be punished for treating the girl like that, so being stabbed repeatedly was perfectly fair.

I'm not really sure.

i think if you were to make such a character it would be cool if we didn't know who it was until we decide to cheat on him, then we would really be surprised if he were to suddenly snap.Though maybe we could defend ourself in case that were to happen?

Well, most males attacking me would be scary as heck. I mean I was a martial artist for a while, but it's still freaky when somebody attacks you (brings back bad memories of High School) anyway, I would like to see a really cute boy character do this though. It would be nice if done right.

I mean if the boy was something like Edgeworth from the Phoenix Wright Series:
[Could not load http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/phoenixwright/edgeworth.png]

Yeah, not really gonna happen and be appealing.

However if the boy was someone cute like:

Momiji Sohma from Fruits Basket or Bridgette from Guilty Gear then it would be more acceptable.

Projected Older Version of Momiji

Younger Momiji

or Bridgette (Yes she's a boy in case you think I'm crazy)
[Could not load http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/5/57/Bridget.gif]

Trying to stay out of the loli realm Smile I think Shishiwakamaru would work well because he's a pretty good Bishi even in the series of Yu Yu Hakusho he's the 'fan favorite'.

But I think it more throws back to the younger characters personally, or at least the more androgynous.

Why isn't it weird, stalker-ish and freaky when it's boys that look like girls or younger boys. I mean, they can still really HURT you. x_x. In the case Hanako's talking about, the guy's be going at you with knives. No matter age or look, it's still a guy that needs to go to a mental hospital.

I'd like the idea of such a type of guy doing that being surprising and we'd get a chance to do something about it, like fight back, or maybe even land him in jail (but that's not the point of dateable guy, is it?) Whatever. In my belief, dating him would be a bad thing but you could still work it that way.

I DON'T believe in physical violence like that. Done well, believably and strike away that violence and you could get a really cute character. But otherwise...I mean, I'm someone that doesn't even like empty threats unless you KNOW the guy's joking around and doesn't mean it.

@Jinroh-randomly....Momiji rocks!!! ^^ He's so adorable when he grows up.

Jinroh

#8 by Jinroh - Jul 14 2008

I definitely concur on the Momiji note.

I like the idea of being able to land the guy in jail or something to that effect which would elude the 'Bad Ending' of you getting killed by him or something like that.

Then there could a Phoenix Wright styled court hearing and you could be all like "OBJECTION!". Wink

I'm still trying to imagine ways that the stereotype could be done with reversed gender, and what the reaction would be. (Again, this is NOT for any game I have in mind, I wouldn't give away the plot like this if it were.)

Imagine there's a shy, geeky, social-outcast boy. Wears glasses and black clothes and has hair that falls in his eyes a lot. And that the female PC is a popular girl.

If you date the geeky boy, then at some point near the big climax (school prom or whatever) your popular friends suggest that you take part in some horrible prank to embarass the geeky boy, and that if you don't do it they'll make you an outcast.

If you turn them down, you and your boyfriend both become outcasts but you stay happily together.

If you betray your boyfriend and go through with the evil prank, he goes psycho and blows up the school, with you and all the mean popular people inside.

Sort of like the movie Carrie, actually. Hrm, I guess the whole 'yandere' thing could be seen as related to revenge-horror movies...

Anyway. So, if the boy is sweet and nice (as long as you don't do something horrible to him), would he still be appealing to date, when you know that if you do betray him, he goes insane?

phoenixgirl

#10 by phoenixgirl - Jul 15 2008

Hmm, if I met such a guy, I most likely wouldn't date him (knowing all the facts, that is). Like I wouldn't be the type to betray someone (without good reason anyway) but having the potential there for the guy to become psycho is a bit scary.

I suppose I'm applying this to my real life. Like my life is crazy as it is and I want someone who can keep it stable.

Yes. Even though that is quite scary (dating someone that unpredictable). I don't think I'm capable of doing something horrible to anyone, honestly. That's just not me. I hate even the smallest lies.

You mentioned Carrie. That's a nice example. What they did to her was awful. I would never be able to bully someone that way! I'm an outcast myself, so who knows, there may be a psycho hiding inside of me too. Laughing

Oooh Yes, Carrie. I almost forgot about that movie. That was horrible, distrubing, scary, and all around creepy. Shocked

Your imagining of the boy is quite good. Socially inept may be a better description.

Oh....

Still wouldn't date the guy, even if I'd never betray him in the first place. I mean, I would, because I think he MIGHT be a good guy if he went through about 50 therapy sessions or anger management classes, but I don't want a time-bomb in my house. And to my mind, guys like that....might become clingy later on. Overly clingy. I was actually thinking that something like that could be your "betrayal" and you can skillfully maneuver out of it and thereby getting rid of the "iffy" ending where you marry him than find out what kind of guy he is.

For some odd reason, I keep being reminded of a alcohol-addicted husband for yandere boys.

I don't know. The idea of such a guy really repulse me, maybe because as a female, I've always always associated threats and violence to "Get the hell away from me", and the idea's been pounded into my head.

Calixte9

#14 by Calixte9 - Jul 15 2008

Personally, I would quite like to see a yandere boy within reason. It really depends on what they do when you betray them and if their psychopathy comes from something deeper (Because for yandere it generally does? Or else they become more of yangire). I mean in the game I'm currently making, there is a boy who is sort of yandere and tries to kill you (But the game's not really a dating sim). I guess it would be good if you could 'cure' them of it by getting to know them and dating them etc.

micchan

#15 by micchan - Aug 3 2009

I like yandere characters, and I know a lot of them, both boys and girls, though I like the boys characters more then the girls, it's sorta more, I dunno, in character?
Yandere boys are pretty common in otome games (the default is a boy who's all laughs and giggles and then BAM goes all dark and scary and then laughs it off right away, because bipolar is smexy!). There's usually at least one yandere, since it's a pretty popular fetish. Since I have a thing for those weird laughing-while-mentally-and-sexually-abusing-you boys, yandere boys are right up my alley, as long as they're a) not emo and b) cute. It's so moe-ish seeing a puppy eyed boy who looks like a baby bird raping, oops, I mean having non-con sex, with a girl. But maybe its just me..?

Anyway, I think that if one doesn't pull it too far (it's cool for the boy to be all like "you're mine and I'm gonna lock you in my room and do delicious things to you" but not "I'm gonna cut you!!"), yandere boys can be alot of fun. I personally think it's actually makes more sense for boys then girls, since guys can and often will go all freaky and macho if a girls cheats them, and girls will mostly cry (and maybe cut the boy tires, but that doesn't really count).

*cough* Sorry for the long post. I'm a rabid fan of visual novels/eroge/otome/romance RPG games, so I got a lot to say about this sorta topic.

I see the appeal with girls. She's cute with pink hair and ginormous eyes than she comes out with a butcher knife and devil horns. If a guy is violent it's not really funny...

Esphirisa

#22 by Esphirisa - Jun 11 2010

Well, as many have said, it WOULD be very disturbing. On the other hand, that type of character might be cute in the sense that he likes the female so much that when she betrays him, or does whatever she's supposed to do to him, he gets hurt THAT badly that he would go all psycho. Kinda like the loyal types, I guess.

Muse

#23 by Muse - Jun 12 2010

Well.... I personally like crazy characters (it's a weird weakness of mine... now I feel like a creep saying it, but it's just in games so oh well...) but not so much yandere.

Extremely bipolar? Sure. Crazy psycho laughter? Yes, please. Fake creepy smiles? YES! Anything crazy and I will probably love it for the "out of the ordinary" sense, even if it's a type that's done over and over for the crazy/creepy type. I still love it. Solely sane until romantically ditched? Not so much... (I mean obviously people who act like that in real life would not be the same at all but in some games and stuff they make them kinda... fun? As long as they show good sides enough to confuse you. Like... Like Linds, from your Date Warp game, actually. He was pretty great personality wise for what I'm getting at. I normally like more goofy "fox-faced" crazy guys but Linds was pretty fun.)

I think though if a yandere or similar character was in a game, it would be difficult... I think more so for guys, but it can be for girls too. There's a difference between comically violent (hey baddies are coming; I'm a cute 12 year old and I'll pull out a cannon to defend you) vs creepy (oh, you don't love me? I'll beat you until you do).

I think than its a good idea to add a yandere boy to a game, but not letting know the player than that character is a yandere util you decide to cheat on him or something like that and making him become ax crazy , killing your lover and/or you and giving you a bad ending

sayuri

#25 by sayuri - Jun 12 2010

You know there is a game that gives off a yandere vibe with guys. If anyone has played Dnd Poison they might understand. It's a Death Note BxB visual novel with MelloxNear being the main pairing. There is a bad ending or two where Mello displays some yandere tenancies. It was really emotional and good but very, very creepy. I guess that means yandere in boys is no good.

It's funny how people are talking like they're seemingly forgetting we're discussing a made up character here, not supposed to be bringing up examples of "real life" such type crazy guys/women or talking about the "I'll just totally lose it if you betray or leave me" as if he was a real person rather than a made up character. I am with most of you though, I have mixed feelings about the idea. I think it depends on how he'd look and what would happen, when it would happen, ect. Linds struck me as a little psycho acting but once you play through the whole game and such you'd understand he's really just an eccentric sorta mad scientist guy and is really a good guy that happens to be a bit of a pervert. Heh. Laughing

The nice things about games, tv shows, ect. is we can fall for crazy guys that we normally wouldn't otherwise and otherwise would have to be totally insane to let ourselves be attracted to such a guy in real life. Can you believe there are fangirls even for guys like Pyramid Head? It's amazing. I can understand, say, falling for Kefka or The Joker because even though they have done horrible things they haven't raped anyone. (depending on the art of them Kefka and TJ can look really good too hahaha) But Pyramid Head? He's not only probably an undead (living zombie or whatever) but he's raped other monsters (mannequin) in the game. In the movie he rips the flesh right off a woman and as far as I know she hasn't even done anything wrong yet she dies. It's gross and horrific. This is not a character that, if he existed in real life, any sane woman would love. I got a theory that Kefka has a sad past and maybe so does TJ (beside the whole being tossed into a vat that changed his looks drastically thing) so I'm a little more lenient I guess on judging them. But if Kefka and TJ were real I'd probably be more afraid of them then lusting over them.

I think that, as long as it is fiction, it might be fun to have a yandere boy bad ending. Like K24601 said, in real life, a yandere boy is no good at all. They'd be really scary. Yes, yes, and more yes! I love jealousy, possessiveness, protectiveness and such! Don't ask me why but I've always been attracted to twisted love and a love interest like that in a game would be just up my alley. I think there is a male yandere in a game. If I recall correctly, it's Evan/Ivan from Ijiwaru My Master. I played the game and I think he did hurt the girl but she wasn't cheating on him so nothing too bad happened to her. I can't really remember since I pretty much skipped his entire route. Nevertheless, I highly doubt I would want to date a yandere type seeing as how they all turn out to be extremely mad or annoyingly possessive. I would rather stick to dual personalities or tsundere types.

I actually like Yandere guys quite a fair bit C:

Not to the extremes of killing or torturing the main character lol. orz;; Just a dark interior as opposed to a shiny exterior. Like those sadistic prince types (for lack of a better word) that first appear to be all kind and friendly, but are actually evil and cunning. I actually like Yandere characters more than Tsundere, both in girls and boys. *shrugs* Imo, Honey from Ouran High is considered a Yandere character even though he's all cute and innocent in the anime(I still remember his face when his bunny got drenched in tea). Not that I have a thing for shota but ya, I do like characters with a tinge of 'yandere'ness to them.

I think the concept of yandere only works for gorgeous guys though. People wouldn't approach a shady/gloomy guy with a moody personality. On the other hand, if the guy appears to be really gentle and is always seen smiling, but turns out to be a sadistic conniving fiend, that's actually pretty exciting. I guess it depends on how far you go with the idea. Killing the main character would be too much, unless it's a psychological thriller of sorts. D:

This would not be appealing to me at all, mainly because I had a boyfriend who was this type of person. I didn't cheat on him, yet he was so controlling, possessive and jealous he thought that every guy was trying to take me away. He wanted to know where I was every moment, who I was with. He even controlled what I ate and wore. I finally had to move out of state and get a restraining order on him because he became violent. This would actually discourage me from buying a game. (I own a few of your games and have followed the company for 9 years now.) I don't think this would be a healthy option.

For me the most interesting thing about yanderes is not when they attack you; it's when they attack or are cruel to other people. Trying to drive away your friends or potential love interests so they can't steal you from eim, taking extreme and violent measures against anyone e believes intends to harm or trick you, using "persuasion" to force others to act in ways that support your relationship, etc. Yanderes absolutely idolize the object of their affection, so if they are attacking them it should probably be an attempted murder-suicide rather simple rage.

As a straight male, I'd be more interested in a female yandere; but attempting to pursue a female romance while attempting to protect my crush from a male yandere whos pursuing me; with all the conflict and drama that would result; could be interesting too.

YESH~
I love yanderes!
Anyways, yandere is someone who would do anything just to get what they want (to be loved by... to be together with... etc).
They would basically destroy everything that get in his/her way. As in, the friends, the families, and anyone who's close to the one they love.
They may even kill the one they love just so that that one person will be his/her forever. Or even, protect the one they love that includes massive killing and stuff.

Aah~ If there's a yandere boy I will seriously date him first xD

kyoli

#43 by kyoli - Jul 13 2013

I don't know butting it in the context like carrie. I kind of like the sounds of it. Cause as long as you remain faithful and don't do anything to betray him he will probably be the sweetest person ever. Yeah I don't like the idea of him flipping out on me, but that shouldn't happen as long as he isn't betrayed though you do run the risk of something like that happening if a misunderstanding comes up in which case I would probably have regretted being with him. (you know if he doesn't kill me before I can regret it)

TheBetterStory

Hmm...

#44 by TheBetterStory - Jul 24 2013

I think the appeal of a yandere isn't so much the violent aspect of their personality, but the contrast between their outward facade and their inner mental instability. They're made interesting that way. As an obtainable character, I think their charm is how obsessive they are about the main character--it's impossible to feel insecure or worry over whether or not they're interested in you when they're barely stopping themselves from locking you up and keeping you to themselves forever. That's just my take on it, though. And I would certainly like to see you take that character archetype and make it into someone realistic!

Re: Yandere in boys

I personally am always looking for a romance game with yandere boys. The appeal for me personally IS the violence and obsession. Someone who loves you to that point is loving you more than someone who doesn't, right? And sure yandere girls are cute and attractive, but there's just more of a real physical threat with a male, and that's such a turn on. When someone smaller than me threatens me with a knife, I'm hardly scared. Although admittedly, I do recognise that not everyone gets off on fear, so up to you really. Just nice to have the option. Also you had it a little off. You don't actually have to dump a yandere for them to go off. Someone having a crush on you could trigger a similar spree. Or even just some perceived threat to the relationship. The defining characteristics of the yandere are extreme jealousy and possessiveness, to the point of obsession.

I always thought this was a stereotype of the otome genre (at least, the Japanese games I've played... xD)

The usual difference between the girls and the guys is that the girls get physically violent and the guys get sexually/emotionally violent. I think part of the appeal comes from a demure girl suddenly becoming all powerful, so makers of boy yanderes are typically aware that a guy who gets physically violent is very scary and threatening to their female players. Instead, he would typically do things like:

* lock her up in a room/cage to "keep all to himself"
* rape-that-technically-isn't-rape (As in, it's presented as if it was rape in the story and in terms of... well, sexual titillation, but because we get the protagonist's narration and thoughts we know that it's not actually rape because she's actually totally okay with it - of course, this varies by game... some games are totally okay with her not wanting it at all!)
* drugging heavily to achieve the same effect as in bullet point one
* getting extremely jealous
* getting physically violent towards another GUY, not to the female protagonist
* becoming verbally aggressive
* being extremely sexually forward (part of his desire to control you, I guess, is to possess you and make you "think only of him" and "He's the only one who can do x and x with you, blah blah)
* in sympathetic portrayals, either distancing themselves from you (I'm too out of control for you, I'm not good for you) and in a good ending getting better, or in unsympathetic portrayals, eventually dying or killing the protagonist, or in fetishized portrayals, the girl happens to be TOTALLY OKAY WITH THIS!

There are other staples of the yandere boy, but these are the ones I've seen in pretty much all the games I've heard of them in.
As for me, I feel weirdly about these kinds of guys... part of me is like, "there is no way these guys are good," but part of me can sometimes really like them (depending on their portrayal and level of .. well, abuse) in a kind of escapist fantasy type way. Like, there's no way that I would, in real life, date a guy who was crazy possessive of me, but that's not to say I wouldn't be interested in experiencing the danger and the jealousy (which I am a huge fan of in theory) and crazy twistedness (yes, I like how the guy suddenly goes crazy because a lot of times it's one of the most interesting aspects of the game - this guy trying to justify his actions towards you, the character's acceptance or non-acceptance of this, and the depths to which he falls) in a game.

It's a game, it's a safe place to experience things you don't want to or would not like to experience in real life (how many girls really want to be the enemy of her boyfriend's fanclub and get bullied? but it makes for an interesting play experience and plot device!). It's a fantasy, so I think as long as it's not presented as if it's a really good thing (as if all boys should be freaky abusive possessive murderous rapists) it's fine.

In other words: yes please. (But let's try not to be too sadistic because that just never... no.)

After reading Cheratomo's post, I just realized:

Christian Grey from Fifty Shades of Grey is TOTALLY a yandere. :(

Disclaimer: I only read the first couple chapters of '50 shades' before realizing it wasn't for me. The rest of my knowledge comes from second-hand reviews like Jennifer Trout.

Hahahaha! Christian definitely has a lot of yandere aspects, but I hesitate to call him a yandere for one reason: He won't shut up about how all she has to do is say the word and he'll leave her alone and they'll pretend it never happened. (At least in the first book, which is all I read.) So she has a choice, and while he definitely stalks her and is possessive and stuff, he always says "if it bothers you, say so, and I'll stop."

Yanderes tend to be like "Oh? Am I frightening you? THEN YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE LOOKED AT THAT OTHER GUY! Better yet, stay inside my house so you can't look at other men at all! You have no choice in the matter!" In some games, even when you're on a different guy's route the yandere will show up out of nowhere and be like "look who has your boyfriend hostage!" or "look who killed your boyfriend because you wouldn't pay attention to me! >D" or "You can only love onii-chan... D<"

In other words, almost everything about yanderes is about non-consent - even if the protagonist likes it, or consents to it in her head, she rarely or never truly (verbally) consents, which allows players to experience a non-consensual fantasy scenario without feeling like there's anything morally wrong with it.

I'm pretty sure Christian does a lot of things that violate consent within the book, just not in the overtly violent way that the typical yandere character does. I'll let Laci Green explain for me, because she's adorable and also much better at it than me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o92hv7La9Sk (The relevant part is from 1:56 onward.)

I like mentally unstable or violent characters, (ex, Yandere). Mainly because if you successfully get through their routes, you have this amazing sense of accomplishment and the whole 'I didn't get killed! Yay!' thing going round your head.

Being attacked or injured, yet still willing to give them a chance!! I like a little Stockholm Syndrome, fits my twisted brain like a glove...

I think the only time I've ever thought a male yandere was half as good/chilling as a female yandere was with Yeonho from the game Nameless. He was small and not very physically threatening, but he got the clingy "I want to be your everything" down-pat.

A lot of male yanderes are just thugs. The whole point of yandere isn't "YOU'RE ALL MINE BEHOLD HOW DOMINEERING I AM". It's "I'M ALL YOURS PLEASE LOVE MEEEEEEEEEEE". It's the yandere that's ultimately submissive to the target, not the other way around.

I think a yandere could be cool. I like tsundere characters, so why not with a boy? I think for me it would help if it was a very cute, androgynous, delicate kind of boy that seems like the most shy, oblivious, giving kind of boy, but then occasionally snaps and says something scary, aggressive, and insightful. To use a Ouran High School Host Club example - like if a character that acted more like Hani or Tamaki suddenly turned Kyouya at his most evil. Not necessarily all serious and apocalyptic of a reaction necessarily, but maybe something that pops out sometimes. I'd prefer something where you still see traces that it's the same person, not like a dual personality, or a psychopath suddenly showing his real face, more like a hidden facet.

I also love yandere butlers! Very Happy Love interest or not.

One half of the term "cute and psycho" is cute. Idk. When some cute little guy with shaking hands and big eyes says, "I will deswoy eve'ything you wuv," you feel more like giggling than being afraid. And giggles are for cutie pies.

I don't like yandere characters, but I feel you might be able to do something interesting with them. A yandere boy might be kinda weird, though- in real life I feel like you see a lot more boys filling a similar psycho/stalker/abusive role, so it might hit a bit too close to home sometimes.

I like having Yandere characters in games - they're interesting.
I think the reason why people like them so much is that they have the fascination of 'changing' the character, or believing that he is truly a good person even if others say he is not and the character plainly just feels this way because they want to 'prove' something. Damien. I still love his character, though

Making a yandere boy in a dating sim is a delicate process at best xD. They either turn out bloody amazing or just.....to violent or pathetic.

In my opinion, Damien from magical diaries became a bit yandere after almost killing mary sue in magical diaries and he was done really well, obsessed and crazy, but not too violent towards her....normally. So in my opinion, i think you could pull it off again if you wanted to, and make the game bloody amazing, and one i'd buy in a heartbeat :3

Yandere characters can be entertaining, but usually when they're female. Maybe society's double-standard has something to do with it, as characters like Shion from Higurashi and Yandere-chan from the upcoming Yandere Simulator game seem quite popular, but I can't think of any male ones off the top of my head. Not saying I'm opposed to defying the stereotype- it could be interesting. Maybe if it's done almost like a parody instead of a serious romance?

Yandere boys and girls can be interesting, but I don't care for them too much unless part of their story involves them overcoming that obsessive jealous, and coming to trust the target of their love.

The main problem here seems to be that a Yandere male character can very easily slide behind the abuser line. The trick would be to make the trigger to his Terminator Mode independent from a girl or a romantic relationship - that might also keep the plot interesting. Other option would be to make his Terminator Mode extremely destructive, but not necessarily violent.

I'm thinking along the lines of Kyouya's triggers in Ouran High School (and he falls in the category of slightly geeky dark haired bespectacled boy). The main characters know that he is truly a bastard, but he is not going to snap or mistreat anyone unless you push one of his buttons (and he really only has one... Tamaki). If you are familiar with the anime / manga, the way he utterly (and elegantly) destroys the Newspaper Club for reasons of his own comes to mind.

There are also Simkin's snaps in Joram's Sword trilogy... he is a delightful trickster character most of the time.

Other way to pull this kind of character would be to make the trigger a hidden one, going to blue and orange morality. So it might not be the fact of cheating that makes him snap, but cheating under a sacred tree where his family has performed ritual sacrifices for centuries. If the trigger is hidden, the main character might be able to get away with it depending on the context (and that might make players wonder why Yandereman snapped in one playthrough but not in the other).

Real life news just reminded me that guys like that would just as soon kill you over some slight, perceived or real.

Of course real life sucks.
