I'm currently fooling around with a silly project involving a card game. Real cards, nothing computer here. Since that isn't what my main audience is going for, I may never complete it (Not sure it's worth buying all the art) or may use a kickstarter or something to get pre-orders before doing so.

Out of curiosity, though - in a game which is largely about giggling over pictures of bishies, would you want them all to be drawn by the same artist or different ones? I know a lot of people like consistent art, but at the same time a wider range makes it more likely that you'll find something you like, and the characters themselves are so varied that it's likely that any one artist will not be so great at the style needed for at least some of them.


EDIT: I've kinda lost the momentum on this one, it seems fairly unlikely that I'm ever going to have it done with anything other than MY sketchy art. If I ever get it together enough to finish a prototype deck, I'll post again.

it's always the look that draws me into things the better the art the more likely i am to play or check out. consistency is nice but i am all about the looks of the end results.

I don't care about "consistency." I'd just want the best art.

For me it depends on what type of card game you're making.

If you're doing a standard 52 card (plus jokers) style deck then different artists could be really distracting unless you were using the same person per suit so there was a uniform way of identifying them.

If you're doing a tarot style deck the same artist makes the most sense (nothing more jarring then flipping a card during a reading and seeing it not correspond whatsoever with the other cards visually).

If you're doing a pokemon/magic the gathering or other similar style game then different artists can be kind of cool and add to that collectible feeling. I like looking at the deck pictures of those types of card games while I attempt to decipher the sometimes incomprehensible texts on them.

So this is going to be character driven again? Then use the artist that best fits each character especially if you're not going to have suits. It's too bad you're not going to do an online port as well (some kind of card program) that lets people play the game on their computer and if they want to they can buy the collectible physical deck.
