Life Sim Question

I'd like to make my own Princess Maker type game and I was curious what kind of programs can I use to do that.

I'm no expert on game engines, but I know Ren'Py can work for a life sim. Some life sims like Spirited Heart use Ren'Py, and it's pretty easy to get the hang of.

I also hear Game Maker is pretty good, but I've never tried that.
