Cinders - a romantic fairytale VN

#1 by hanako - Jun 30 2012

A beautiful new take on the tale of Cinderella, with lush graphics and a lot of surprises in store.

A story about balancing freedom and dreams with circumstance and harsh reality; about growing up and finding out the true meaning of independence. Distancing itself from the judgmental simplicity of the original, Cinders tries to explore the more complex nature of oppression, responsibility and innocence.

The game focuses on characters and their motivations, and is heavy on player choices and role-playing. With 120 decision points and over 300 options to choose from, Cinders allows you to shape the main character’s personality and the course of the story.

For anyone hesitating -> the game is awsome.
Finally, a fairytale that makes the main female portagonist a normal rational person and not the usuall slightly useless lady waiting for the rescue.
Its an amazing twist from the original version of the story, and you have such a varity of different possible endings that may change because of just one decision...

The only thing I'm having trouble with, is reaching all the endings (because of such complicated branched structure), and there is no official guide or walkthrough.

xXNight_WingsXx

#8 by xXNight_WingsXx - Jul 25 2012

You're right, there isn't any official walkthrough...However, on the official websites forum there is actually a guide that gives you tips on the type of endings you can get. Like whatever choice you make can change Cinders personality completly.
Here's the link if you're interested: http://moacube.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2768

Also if you're interested in getting the right answers for each of the individual guys in the game, here's something that's being worked on as we speak Smile:

I got this game two days ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. (:

Admittedly, it was a little tough to stray away from Perrault once I found out how awesome the character was. Q o Q Dem belts. <3 However, I DID manage to get all of the endings. The flexibility of the story is absolutely fantastic. ^_^

The art in this game was superb! The scenery and the characters are painted in such a way that it gave the game a very Brother's Grimm feel to it, which really suited the somewhat darker themes of the game.

Thank you, Hanako! x

I'm downloading the demo now. The art looks awesome . . . shame about the price, though. I sure can't afford a 23 dollar game right now.

I wonder if they're going to mark down the price soon.
Considering it was just released that's unlikely.

I wouldn't be surprised if the price drops eventually or if there's a special sale at some point (and if I hear about it, it'll be in the newsletter) but I would not expect the price to go down for real within the next few months.

I don't know, though, it's not my game. Can only guess. Smile

The demo seems interesting, but I have a few questions.

1) About how long does a single playthrough take?

2) With the variations in the endings... I noticed on the title screen that there seem to be four 'main' endings, with different variations. Is it like Cute Knight Kingdom, where your decisions/skills affect it, even if you end up with one particular guy?

I have never played a game that was 'pure' visual novel before (no stat-raising, minigames, etc...) but this seems intriguing. I just want to make sure I get enough playtime out of it to justify spending >$20.

TeeGee

Hi Smile.

Tom, the developer of Cinders here.

A single playthrough takes from 4 to 6 hours to finish, depending on how fast your read, the routes you pick, etc.

There are four main ending paths, each with several variants within. So, for instance, Cinders becoming a queen is one of the main paths. But what queen she has become, who is her lover, who is her advisor, is she a cruel ruler or a dreamer with connections to the fairy realm - those are different variants of that ending. It took our players from 10 to 20 hours to see them all.

Hope it helps. Thanks for trying our game Smile.

Just a couple comments for anyone else thinking of buying this game:

1) The writing was quite good, though with a few occasional typoes and some jarring phrases. (Color me old-fashioned, but 'weird' and 'ok' seem a little out of place in a semi-Renaissance setting)

2) Game mechanics wise, it was well done... sort of like a more grown-up choose your own adventure book, with gorgeous images. I liked the rewards/trophy system and how it updates the main page as well; I thought it was rather innovative.

After just one play through, I'm intrigued... I will definitely play it again, though probably not too soon. Like reading a book, I would prefer to forget a few things before launching right back in.

Theme/moral-wise, I really liked the updated fairytale concept, as well as the clever, innovative, and occasionally wry references and self-deprecation. Occasionally it seems a bit too concerned with being a 'mature' fairytale (reality vs imagination, fate vs choosing your own destiny) and was a bit heavy-handed, but I still enjoyed it overall.

Still a bit pricy for what I'm used to playing, but it still met my main criteria for games: provide me with at least twice as many hours of enjoyment as hours I'd have to work to make up for the cost! And after I do a few more playthroughs and unlock additional paths, I doubt I'll mind at all.

Sorry to jump in but it won't let me register on the moacube forum so thought I might as well ask here - does anyone know if there's ending where Sophia (the nice stepsister) ends up with the prince? I quite liked them together Razz

By the way, there's a certain thing that Carmosa says, and I was wondering if anyone found a connection in the story to dig into it?

"Is that a storm coming over the horizon? It's one of those strange, cold ones... Without rain. I think I remember a storm like this. Many years ago. That night when she died..."

I was wondering who 'she' is... And what the comment means, but I'm not sure of how to delve into it more. Anyone know anything?

thezooqueen

#23 by thezooqueen - Sep 17 2012

This is most likely because of the interference by the witch-doctor and or the fairy. They were in connection with Cinders mother's death also.

Does anyone know how to get Grim Fate with Perrot or however you spell the captains name?

cae

#24 by cae - Sep 18 2012

Apparently... you have to become Tobias' lover, but be friends with Perault... Um, it doesn't make much sense to me. That's what the wiki said tho.

thezooqueen

yeah I saw that also tried it and only Tobias showed up

TeeGee

Hi,

Sorry for not replying to this thread earlier.

Our forums are indeed closed for registrations right now. We have some serious issues with spambots signing up en masse whenever we open it (somehow they bypass our captcha) and we have to fix it first. Sorry for the inconvenience.

There's no route in which Sophia ends up with the Prince. They way we see it, even if Cinders makes her overall situation better, she's still too insecure when the Ball happens.

To make Perrault appear on Cinders' grave, you just have to befriend him and not be in a romance with Tobias. There was some bug related to this in the earlier versions, so you may want to re-download the game first.

thezooqueen

#27 by thezooqueen - Sep 20 2012

Ok thank you very much!

I will ask my friend in network securities how he dealt with the spam bot problem on his forum. My email is [email address removed] id you email me when I get the infor from him I can pass it on to you. Smile

Best of luck <3

hehehehe nice one but Tobias needs a smarter girl than Gloria, don't you think?

thezooqueen

#29 by thezooqueen - Sep 21 2012

I think Gloria is smart, but not able to handle the pressure. Always having things forced on you to be perfect like your Mother wants will lead to poor choice decisions. But that is just my opinion.

TeeGee

#30 by TeeGee - Sep 21 2012

Yeah. For us, Gloria was always smart, but she's too much in the shadow of her mother to allow for independent thinking.

TeeGee

About Perrault appearing in the Grim Ending as a mourner?

I looked into it and realized that there might be a bug that makes this ending variant far more difficult to achieve than it should be. If it's the case, I'll fix it in the near future.

Hi, I think the connection with Carmosa, the story, and that quote have to do with Cinder's mother's death which involves the faeries who may have killed Cinder's mother.

cae

I agree. I just want to know if there's a development in the story in which we can find out.

TeeGee

#39 by TeeGee - Oct 2 2012

There's no way to learn more about it in the game, but it's open to speculation. Actually, I remember asking the writer about it. It wasn't planned in the script, so I was curious myself. He told me it's his secret and I'm free to think whatever I want. So there you go ;).

I also think I fixed the Perrault Grim Fate ending bug. If it fares well in testing, I'll make it public soon.

I cannot for the life of me get the Grim Fate where Perrault mourns. It's driving me crazy. It was mentioned that you fixed the bug and that it would go through testing, but that was a month ago. Did anything happen with it? Was it ever updated?

And if it was.. why is it still so difficult for me to get this? *_* I'd really appreciate if someone who has gotten it since the update helped me out with this. Perhaps tell me how you went about it? Because I've looked around and tried what other people suggested and it still hasn't worked.

I would like to add that the Perrault Grim Ending problem should indeed be fixed. Just make sure to re-download the game from the email BMT sent you. If it says it's expired, just let me know and I'll reset it for you.

If you are unsure which version you have -- you can check it by hovering your mouse over the exe file or by running the installer. Perrault is fixed in 1.0.8.0. You may have 1.0.7.0.

Errr. I no longer have the e-mail. Upon checking my version I apparently have 1.0.7.0. x.x So that probably explains why that drove me crazy until I eventually gave up and stopped playing. XD;

Is there still a way I could get the new version? Does BMT save that sort of information?
