Does XP count against Sage?

I learned all the charms but got Witch instead.

It doesn't count *against* it, but if you had tons of XP you might simply have had more points towards the Witch ending than you did towards the Sage ending.

witch = xp, magic class, magic skill, mind

sage = mind, magic class, magic skill, spells, number of times you visited the library

(with various modifiers, of course)

I learned all the charms and had lots of experience and got a sage ending instead. I don't get it...
