Hero VS Fighter?

Hello! Everytime I try to get the Hero ending (it's my last one before I can finish the gallery), I end up getting the Fighter ending instead. I know the difference between the two is the magic skill, so I raised it over 90, and I still have gotten the Fighter ending. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

if your strength and combat stats are really high they may still push you over to the fighter side

The official requirements for Hero are
Weapons > 90
Magic > 90
Dream > 50
Sins < 25
XP > 800

compared to Fighter
Weapons > 50
Sins < 50
Dream > 50
XP > 800

So it's not just magic that's the difference, you also need weapons+40, sins-25 compared to Fighter. If your weapon skills are good enough and your sins low enough, perhaps you should try with less strength, I think high strength biases you towards fighter as well.
