Deluxe won't launch on my computer

I downloaded the cute knight deluxe demo and installed it. When I click on its icon in my start menu my computer does nothing. Just acts as though I didn't click on it at all. The demo for the non-deluxe version works fine though. Any idea what is going on? Oh yeah, and I also uninstalled it and reinstalled it 5 times and redownloaded it 3 times.

Well, what sort of computer do you have? (operating system, etc)

windows xp service pack 2
amd athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 4200+
1 GB RAM
NVidia GeForce 7300 GS OC Video Card with 256 mB onboard RAM with virtual memory up to 512 mB

That's strange. I can't think of anything in that situation that should make one work and not the other.... Do you know which demo for the original game you have? There are a ton of different versions that ended up in different portals, some of which are older than others and therefore run on slightly different engines. The one on the hanakogames website, iirc, is a double version with both hifi and lofi builds, and the lofi build is stripped down to run on just about anything, so it wouldn't be surprising if it worked somewhere that the newer ones didn't.

Still, your computer sounds like it shouldn't have trouble with the later builds, and the specific error you're reporting is a new one on me. I've heard of Vista acting like you didn't even launch a game (if you manage to find an old non-vista-compatible version) but not XP.

If you ignore the start menu and navigate in explorer to the folder that the game's installed to, will it work if you try to launch directly from the exe? Any error message? Does the exe appear to be present, the correct size, and showing the correct icon?

... Also, silly question but one that has to be asked. Are you sure you downloaded the Windows-version demo and not the Mac or Linux one?

I did download the windows version.
The .exe file is in the correct folder and it is 4.76 mB.
Also the downlopader page says the installer is 5 mB but when I download it it ends up being 4.56 mB.
And when I click on the .exe file in the program folder the same thing happens. Nothing.

Also I can't find the version of cute knight I used but I got it from http://www.funpcgame.com/strategy/cute-knight/cute-knight.php

And my version of deluxe is from this site v1.0.0.0

Hrm, that looks like a site that has a slightly older build than the ones on my site, so there is an engine difference but not a big one.

My best guess would be that there's a weird driver incompatibility somewhere on your system, something unusual enough that no one else has encountered and reported it. Check your drivers for updates, maybe?

I can make you special versions of the game built on different engines until we find one that works, but obviously I'd prefer to sort out why it's screwing up. (Also, if I custom-build you a demo, that wouldn't help you run the full version!)

Out of curiosity, will the Fatal Hearts demo run on your system?

Give me a minute. I'll try the Fatal Hearts Demo. And the last time I updated my drivers (specifically my graphics card one) It screwed up my comp and I had to do a system restore. So I'd rather not do that if I can help it.

Edit: Fatal Hearts Demo works just fine.

Okay, it's definitely that particular engine fork and something on your system not getting along well. Well, on the *bright* side, you shouldn't have that problem with the sequel when it's finished, as it's using the same engine fork that Fatal Hearts is.

I'll upload a very different engine version demo for you in a bit if you want, but as warned the full version still won't work right for you - if you did want to get the full version I'd have to give you a special copy.

sure that would be great. and if I want the full version I'll let you know. I probably will but I just want to know if you make a special copy of the full version will it cost extra? I don't mind paying extra since it'll be a bit of extra work for you but I just want to know.
