Kickstarter + Early Demo

#1 by hanako - Jan 12 2019

The kickstarter is now live!!

There are also demos available both on itch and on Steam.

Please let me know if you encounter any problems with either the kickstarter or the demos, or even just if you have random comments

Awww good luck with the KS. It's looking really hopeful so far. ^^

I was wondering. I'm not able to support on KS at this time since it still won't accept Paypal as a payment option, but will there be an option later on to fund the game using Paypal as well? I know some KS projects will later have such a separate option.
Please help and support me here.

I hope that the final game will not force the PC to study all five classes for the first week. I loved how in Horse Hall, PCs could get in trouble for focussing all of their attentions upon 1 colour - and choose how to react to that trouble.

I just played the demo and love it! The new art style and some of the little quality-of-life changes like the spell explanations just made me enjoy the game so much more. I'm really looking forward to the full game!

Downloading the demo on Steam right now! I should be able to contribute to the Kickstarter after I pay my credit card bill (which will be after I get my paycheck, so it will be a couple of weeks, but I'm DEFINITELY contributing).

To whoever pledged enough to get a romance with Manuel, you have my undying devotion. I was already over the moon about the Kickstarter getting started, and that was the bonus romance I was hoping for the most. This is a great day.

Re: Kickstarter + Early Demo

#7 by Runespoor - Jan 13 2019

Wow, having played the demo, I cannot wait until I have the full game in my hands!

I'm looking forward to getting to know Barbara (and boy, her aesthetic is on point), and it was such fun to revisit events or meet character we already knew, but from a different perspective! In particular, fun to see how Minnie comes across differently - we're not "one of the wildseed girls from Horse Hall", we're "the mysterious foreign exchange student"...

The system of personality-dialogue looks like it will be super fun to figure out. I already did two playthroughs, picking slitghtly different options: both MCs got the same "flirty" descriptor, but one also got "scheming". Intriguing!

Like a comment above, I too hope in the final game we'll be able to fail our first week. Razz If only because if memory serves, there's a Damien hanging around the gym, looking for impressionable-wildseed-prey. Which WolfPC is not - fun!

Other things of note:
- it took me until today to realise that the campaign WolfPC can run for isn't the treasurer spot. I'm very observant. (HYPE! HYPE! Competition hype!!!!!)
- Angela's redesign cracks me up so much, wrt William. It's like, William has a Type: terrible people who pay a lot of attention to their appearance. I would say I'm sorry, but he gives very nice woobie vibes, and while I'm not sure MD would go the Cruel-Elodie-with-Alice, I get curious.

Also: the dummy is incredibly creepy.

Just played the demo and I'm hooked. I'm wondering, since the Wolf PC is apparently using a fake name, will the player get to choose his real name at some point?

Also, the Ellen and Virginia dynamic is adorable - it's really neat to observe them when you're not their roommate. Barbara looks like an awesome character - I'm excited to learn more about her.

PS: Someone PLEASE donate for the Raven dating option! I've wanted to date her ever since Horse Hall.

Very excited ! I don't have time to play the demo right now, maybe tonight, but I launched it and the music on the title screen made me so eager to go back to the Academy !

Just wondering, Hanako : does the "Early Bird" reward "plus a bonus for getting in early" refer to it being cheaper than the next tier ? If it doesn't and it's another kind of bonus, does selecting another reward during the Early Bird period give that bonus ? I would like to select the Early Access tier, but I was wondering about that "bonus".

Also, I found it a bit strange that "unlocking romantic options" were tiers that just one person had to pay for, while generally those kind of things are stretch goals. Maybe we could lauch a kickstarter to gather enough money to unlock the romantic options ? Laughing

Good luck Hanako ! Everything will go well.

Best of luck with the Kickstarter! Doesn't look like you need it, so please stop stressing so much, it's going fine. Smile

Anyway, you should probably restrict people from naming themselves after characters already in the game. Other than the usual confusion, it also make the codex a little harder to decipher.

Yeah, the 'bonus for getting in early' just means it's cheaper. Sorry if that was unclear.

I know it's a slightly odd way of doing the extra romance options. (Rambly stuff you can skip all this if not interested) Basically, I didn't want to do the standard 'unlock X character at X stretch goal!' thing because I didn't want to have to rank them in order (which could lead to some frustrations depending on who comes first) and I wanted some options available for big spenders.

When the stretch goals go up (shortly), one of the planned levels is to unlock a side romance, and the backers will get to vote on who becomes romanceable out of a list of possibilities. So if nobody straight-up buys a character, then you'll have a chance to vote for them and the most desired character will get in.

The list of votable characters is larger than the list of four currently up as purchaseable routes, so if people buy all four of those routes, there will still be characters to vote on.

I'm not really sure how the paypal thing would work. We're not set up with backerkit yet (which I guess we should look at). At a guess we might be able to do the normal tiers but not the limited ones? Not sure. Sorry I can't really give much of an answer on that yet.

No teachers will be eligible for romances in Wolf Hall, sorry. They will not be included in the voting.

(For one thing, if you've played the demo, Grabiner's position as pseudo-parental-figure to WolfPC makes that something I'd feel very weird about writing. People can totally fanfic it if they want, but I'd rather not go there myself. There will, however, be more scenes of them relating to each other in private, so you will definitely see more of him.)

Runespoor

Re: Kickstarter + Early Demo

#28 by Runespoor - Jan 15 2019

I will prepare myself for campaigning/voting for Angela myself with my fingers crossed! (and thank my stars she's not a reward option, for my wallet...)

In brief, here's why Angela:
1)Relevancy to other important characters I care deeply about: she's backstory-relevant to William and Damien and thus in a unique position to watch the show and share with us should she so choose;
2)World-building: she's got a lot going on: she's ambitious and 'smart' by the wizarding world standard, so I'm interested in that aspect of the world-building and what she could tell us about it;
3)Character development: she's been presented to us as a very unpleasant person, and I want to know how she sees herself, what are the sides of her we didn't see in Horse Hall, if there's a more positive aspect to her, her hope and dreams, her fears, stuff like that;
4)Tone: her abrasiveness is vastly entertaining to me and I look forward to reading more of her opinions on everything.
thank you for coming to my TED talk about Why I Am So Invested in Angela

On another note entirely, I find it too bad Grabiner's comments about the lack of traditional nobility in wizarding America only covers natives and people of European descent, and doesn't mention African-Americans.

You can get the bunny ?!
So I ended up backing at the Early Bird tier, but I will almost definitely switch to Early Access before the deadline. I can't wait to run for student council president, flirt my way to victory, have dramatic reveals about my identity and also tell Damien to back the hell off from Ellen.
I hope all the additional romances are bought ! Personally the one I want most is Luke, I really liked him in the demo. But Raven looks really interesting as well.

EenPersoon

Re: Kickstarter + Early Demo

#30 by EenPersoon - Jan 16 2019

The WolfPC is pretty interesting considering his background. I look forward to learn more about his family.

I'm happy that Manuel and Suki will be a side romance, but will it also be possible to just be friends with them? I really like friendship routes Very Happy

hanako

Re: Kickstarter + Early Demo

#31 by hanako - Jan 16 2019

The side romances aren't really full routes, but as they aren't written yet I have no idea what will be involved. If whoever backed those specifically wants just friendship scenes, that's what will happen. Most likely, though, it will be a few friendly interactions early on to establish a setup and then the option of going on a couple of dates and attending the Ball together.

Because these are reward tier options a lot is going to depend on what the individual backer wants, and as they are only side romances they are not going to have as many options and permutations as a real route would. After all, there's always the possibility of those characters having full routes in some other game, so we wouldn't want to expose all their deepest darkest secrets now!

EenPersoon

Re: Kickstarter + Early Demo

#32 by EenPersoon - Jan 16 2019

That's completely understandable! Just being able to have more interactions with them than in Horse Hall is good enough for me. Actually, I'm a bit relieved that the player won't get to know too much about them when they're a side romance. That it's possible more will be revealed about them in their full route in a different game (though I'm aware them getting a full route probably isn't set in stone and far away in the future Very Happy ) Fortunately, the full routes in Wolf Hall also look to be a lot of fun to play!

That aside, I wish I could support the Kickstarter but I don't have a creditcard. If Paypal ever becomes an option I would definitely support too.

How kickstarter think going with this? At i look earlier it shows goal reached already?

hanako

Re: Kickstarter + Early Demo

#37 by hanako - Jan 18 2019

We've reached the base goal, yes. At the moment we're seeing how many stretch goals can be hit in order to add extra things to the game. Right now we've unlocked extra character creation options (and Spiky and I have started fooling around with new eye colors, preparing a dressup section for the mall store, etc) and one bonus side romance that will be voted on at the end of the campaign.

If we hit the next goal I'll commission someone to write a song for the game - the first magical diary never had a vocal track, this will be new.

The next goal after that adds a post-game dungeon option so you can play around with your character and his full list of spells after finishing the story.

We have some other ideas that might happen if the pledges get high enough, we'll just have to wait and see. But we're trying not to get TOO carried away either. Smile

Re: Kickstarter + Early Demo

What I'm currently thinking about doing for the paypal people (this is not set in stone, just a plan I'm pondering) is, after the kickstarter, allow people to buy into the beta on Itch for the same price as the kickstarter tier. You wouldn't be able to get any of the special limited kickstarter rewards, but you'd be able to support the game and take part in the beta discussions, and running it through itch would let me group customers together more cleanly to make sure no one gets left out in updates.

Does that sound reasonable?

EenPersoon

Re: Kickstarter + Early Demo

#42 by EenPersoon - Jan 19 2019

That sounds fine to me! That's the £20 tier, right? I personaly don't mind missing out on the special limited kickstarter rewards.
That said, I do have some questions. Will we also get the full game download after the beta is done (just like the £20 tier)? If so, do we have to get the full game download from itch.io too or is it possible to get it from Steam? I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but I've never played a game in beta before so I don't know what it all entails Sad
I'm happy that there might be a way support the game with paypal though!

hanako

Re: Kickstarter + Early Demo

#43 by hanako - Jan 19 2019

Selling it on itch should turn it into a 'preorder' so it'll automatically carry over and update to the full game and access to steam keys when they're available. As I understand it.

With itch games, we can set it up so that steam keys are automatically available to people who own the game. So you'd get the game there initially, but you'd be able to claim a steam key when they were added.

That's what I meant about it being easier to group all the customers together that way. If people were paypalling me individual money amounts I'd have to keep up with them each separately.

What I don't know at the moment is whether I'll have to delete the existing itch page and create a new one in order to prevent there from being problems with people owning the free demo being suddenly considered to own the full game. Gotta check about that. Smile

Re: Kickstarter + Early Demo

#48 by hanako - Jan 20 2019

Since it's something we're not going to do unless the goal is hit there are no current plans in place.

If we hit that point I'll certainly talk to him and see if he's free, but if not, I have contacts with some other musicians as well. I don't at this point know exactly what I'd want for a song, either, so there may be a lot of talking about ideas before we really settle on anything.

With the past songs usually I've told him a lot about the game, he writes lyrics inspired by it, and I correct them if necessary.

The characters who are already confirmed for side romances are Luke, Manuel, Raven, and Suki.

The voted-on bonus options won't be up for vote until after the kickstarter finishes. First thing I'll want to get everyone who backed at the appropriate level set up with access to the alpha so they can play what there is of the game so far, as that might affect people's opinions on romances. Then I'll list the eligible characters and let everyone vote.

The main personality 'types' for the protagonist are Flirty, Scheming, Sporty, and Lazy. Which one (or more if you tie) your character is marked as depends on your answers to questions - all the random chitchat with Grabiner, Donald, William, etc during the first week is tinkering with your base personality settings. Sometimes these settings will unlock new dialog options. More commonly, they change lines that the PC says in the middle of conversations. Many people will have seen that if their character has become Flirty, he does a little extra winky-winky at Ellen if he gets her name right (which makes her feel awkward).

It's not usually going to be a huge divergence because of personality type, it's more about shaping your playthrough style. But there certainly are times when events will go differently because of the kind of person you've made your PC into.
Being a linguistic student and a comic translator, I would also like to know whether you're interested in the game being translated into Russian Smile
I don't mind people making fan translations but my branching is often pretty complicated and it can be tricky finding all the options - it's usually shorter or more straightforward games that people translate. Official translations, I can't do.

Yeah. Ah, you also know it ...Are you also used/try it? By the it is KitCat not Kitkat...

Sorry about the name mistake, KitCat. Yes, I've played around with Ren'Py and their scripting language. They have a detailed tutorial included which is really helpful with the learning! Smile

Is the vote, when it happens, going to use something other than first-past-the-post? It seems like approval voting would be appropriate, particularly since we will (likely) have 2/5 options being taken.

Don't know yet but you'll probably get to pick at least two options rather than only getting to vote for one.

Great job to the community for now pledging over $25K to the Kickstarter for Wolf Hall! Very Happy

This should now unlock the following stretch goal...

Bonus Post-Game Dungeon - We will add a randomly-generated dungeon mode accessible after the end of the game, so you can take your winning character and play through a new set of obstacles.

THis should make for an interesting addition o the game, certainly.
So, I suppose, NEW BOOBS are a strong draw, but over time, better story wins out. -Hanako

Good hopes at full game...

oh man! i just got done with the demo and i'm mcfreakin HYPED???!!!! the new art is nice to look at (everyone looks like they GLOWED UP and i'm all for that, we stan broad shouldered william), and i love the little definition book! i'd forgotten how invested i was with the magical diary world too, so i'm excited to see where the world building goes now that we're not in a wildseed's perspective! it's also kinda wild that it's been literally years and yet the eir pronoun concept still bugs me, but it's still a neat concept for magical beings tbh! i'm specially excited for damien to show up, i miss our beautifully deceptive trash man lol

Closer and closer to the thirty thousand stretch goal! I already pledged, so here's hoping for lots more pledges in the last few days of the campaign!

I'm feeling pretty confident about it. Most Kickstarters get a boost in the last forty-eight hours, so that'll probably be enough to put it over the top.

And the kickstarter is over. Congrats on the successful fundraising. So when all the fun dies down afterword, it would be neat if you gave a review over your experience for your first kickstarter. Anything that went better than expected, anything you wish you would do differently, ect.

I'm happy the KS was such a success! If the Paypal option on Itch becomes available, will it be announced on here?

Re: Kickstarter + Early Demo

Yeah, I'll post about it here as well as on the mailing list and other such things.

Right now I'm waiting through the payment-collection period to figure out which pledges do and don't go through - some payment methods expire or the bank flags it as a suspicious transaction, so there's a week or so after the campaign ends where those things can be fixed and updated. So I can't start sending out beta keys until it's certain who's in and who's not, and I don't want to make beta access available for other buyers until that group is ready.
