Magical Diary: Wolf Hall (Early development thread)

#1 by hanako - Jul 17 2017

Pulling up a new thread to talk about how development is going!

And leaving this top post mostly blank because I might edit it later to put in an overall introduction.

For now, the tl;dr version: freshman year, male protagonist, NOT a wildseed. It's the same year as in Horse Hall, so some events will be the same, but the change in protagonist will set a lot of other balls rolling in very different directions.

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#2 by hanako - Jul 17 2017

And here I'm going to talk a bit about some things that might happen in the game, so spoilering.

For plot reasons having to do with his backstory and motivations as written, there is basically no way WolfPC would pull the whole "I'm outta here" business with Initiation. He just wouldn't, it makes no sense for his character, and unlike HorsePC he doesn't have a senior who's intentionally trying to make the whole thing creepier. However, I know the entire Initiation subplot is upsetting for some players. For people who are bothered by it, would you be okay with playing through it if:
- the character has an opportunity to criticise the practice afterwards?
- some of the individual activity parts within Initiation are optional, so you aren't required to agree to anything like the love letter?
- you can stonewall the meanest senior (Angela of course!) and refuse to obey her specific, petty orders, even though you go along with initiation in general?

I am interested in opinions on this topic. I do not guarantee that it will work out exactly like anyone wants, but I am exploring possibilities. Remember, it'll be a long time before the story is final so many things may shift.

I'm totally cool if the male MC can make some criticisms about initiation as well as refuse any order that is on the extreme side. I've never been one to conform so I never took part in traditions like initiation. I prefer marching to the beat of my own drummer. Wink

Not sure if making criticism would really make a difference, because Initiation is tradition right? And since witches and wizards really value their traditions, I don't think his criticisms would be taken seriously. I do think that being able refuse petty orders from Angela would a fun option.

I really like the idea of specifically ignoring Angela when she's being intentionally awful. I think having options to refuse anything really weird would also help... Basically, as long as WolfPC isn't totally passive and doesn't just blandly approve of the whole Initiation process regardless of problems, I think it would be fine with me. I get uncomfortable when a game character is really passive about bad stuff, but if you're given the option to disagree or "fight back" in any way, even if you're not outright rejecting everything, I'm happy.

I definitely think that objecting extreme things and arguing would make sense, especially because pc is not a wild seed, therefore they would probably be more familiar with the magical universe and have a bit more confidence standing up for themself. Either way really excited for this game and glad that it is still being worked on XD.

I won't spoil, but I'm totally okay with whatever you want to do regarding what you said. It's not a major issue for me.

Since this topic is here and fresh and stuff, I do want to ask one question (maybe I'm the lost one, but humour me, please?).
Why a male protagonist and why not a sequel to our game?
Just wondering, really. Thanks <3

Super excited for the game.

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#9 by hanako - Jul 20 2017

It was always intended to do other games for other halls, it's not possible to do the kind of followup to horse hall that many people want because of many reasons including art changes and the fact that several storylines people want followups to would go in VERY different directions, see many other threads on this topic and please don't ask any more about that part. Smile

(Not trying to yell at you there! Just - please, don't.)

As for why Wolf Hall rather than Butterfly Hall, I had wanted the series to be welcoming to everyone and let everyone, as much as possible, create the characters they want. Especially if at some point there is a more dungeon-crawl spinoff where you can bring your own characters from previous games. There was a brief moment back in the conception of the game where I thought I could fit all six halls into the first game ... that was obviously NOT workable. Too much content for me to write at once on my own.

Obviously Horse Hall has restrictions, you are required to be a particular kind of girl from a specific place who is into sports and not singing, and WolfPC will have his own kinds of restrictions about what sort of guy he is, but it still opens up a bigger range for other players and types of expression. While I know not everyone's going to be keen on a male protagonist, there are at least the options of BxB routes and getting some different viewpoints on Damien and Grabiner that I hope might tempt a few to follow along.

May sound like a silly question and I apologise if so. Other characters in the magical diary series have mixtures of colours in their hair such as potsdam in the original with her orange with pinky bits and Suki in the newer design you revealed with her white and green.Would it be possible for PC to have some multi-coloured options in the character creation, even if it was just a couple of presets? If so that would be cool and if not I understand that it might be difficult to design.
Thanks Smile

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#11 by hanako - Jul 20 2017

Hmm.

In the first game (as some people who poked around in the directories know) the custom characters were done by having all the PC hair originally stored in one color, shades of red, and then we applied a bunch of transformations to that within the engine. Hue/Saturation/Lightness kinds of things. I attempted lots and lots of combinations and then kept the ones that came out looking okay as the available presets. This is why the range of what colors are and aren't available might look a little strange sometimes. Some colors just didn't work right as transformations from red.

For the character creator in this game, the artist has actually hand-designed the hair colors so that each color has a flattering set of base/highlight/shadow shades. They're all stored as separate images, not as transformations. There are 13 color sets right now - black, blond, medium blue, medium brown, chestnut brown, medium green, lavender, mint, orange, platinum blond, red, turquoise, and white. Since we don't have the same need to worry about filesize anymore (the internet and game buyers have moved on a long way!) I can throw in extra color sets whenever I feel like, and there's no technical reason why they'd have to be single-hue. Multi-color might not work very well on all hairstyles, though, and I'm not sure if it would be a problem in the character creator if some color sets only existed for some hairstyles.

It's a valid idea but I don't want to spend a lot of time messing with it right now, I derail my attention from writing to play with art too much as it is. Keep it in mind and if it doesn't show up in the first testable versions, ask me again about it later? Smile

(Suki's hair isn't white and green though, it's just white, she's wearing green accessories. Barbara is the one with multicolored hair - black/brown shading to red.)

Haha fair enough. I think we can all agree at this stage we care more about the story and release of the game than just appearance based things. Replaying Horse Hall now just to scratch my Magical Diary itch. Thank you for responding!

babyblue

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#13 by babyblue - Jul 20 2017

Thank you for the answer, Hanako. I will not ask anymore, don't worry. But yeah, I think I see how a sequel to Horse Hall would be a lot of work to make (SPECIALLY regarding Damien's romance path) although I hope that ONE DAY we get one. WHO KNOWS, OKAY??? Very Happy I BELIEVE IN MIRACLES! \O/

The art style change wouldn't really bug me, to be honest. If it's quality art, it's good enough for me (and I have played a lot of other Otome Games in which the art style changed with time and all, so yeah!).

And yeah, regarding the male protagonist change, it's a fair point. It's inclusive and it's a change in perspective for the player, I guess, but to be honest, I don't know if I personally will buy the game. From the screenshot you posted on Tumblr, I can see the game looks AMAZING already (the character design made me cry, it's so PRETTY), but I've always had issues connecting with male protagonists, specially in visual novels/otome games/dating sims in general.

However, Magical Diary is certainly one of my favorite games EVER, and I'm thankful I got to play it. I'll be keeping my eyes open for this one and see what are people's general thoughts on it when it comes out. I know you are all doing a wonderful job. Wink

Oh, another quick question!

You said that this game is freshman year, right? So, basically, the same year that our dear Mary Sue went through her entire adventure. xD
My question is: Does Mary Sue exist? Or would this be like an alternative reality in which Mary Sue is NOT there?

That's complicated to answer because spoilers. The best I can say right now is that Wolf Hall will answer a couple of questions about Iris Academy's gender policies (while raising entirely new ones!).
My question is: Does Mary Sue exist? Or would this be like an alternative reality in which Mary Sue is NOT there?
Alternate reality. Her absence from the story will cause various knock-on effects.

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#17 by pod95 - Jul 21 2017

Baby Blue Hanako said in the other thread that existed on this topic that in this timeline Mary Sue doesn't exist. I suppose this is to deal with issues such as the Grabiner and Damien paths, presumably it would be difficult to input EVERY possible outcome of Magical Diary Horse Hall and still have a coherent story for Wolf Hall, there would be too much going on outside of the main story for it to be cohesive. Much like how in Horse Hall, there are plenty of background characters we didn't get to see much of I assume Hanako is focusing more on new characters / background characters we know less about rather than repeating previous story lines with previous characters

Although I don't know, things might have changed since that was brought up in the previous post. Hope this helps Smile

If you think about it, every playthrough of Horse Hall was an alternate reality, so it makes a lot of sense that Wolf Hall would also be an alternate reality... There's no canon story for what happened freshman year, since several of the major routes directly contradict each other. For example, you can't finish romancing Damien or Ellen or Virginia if you've accidentally married Grabiner even though these are all major paths in the story of Horse Hall. Mary Sue's appearance and personality don't even have a canon beyond very basic stuff (liking sports, for example) and they can vary wildly from game to game. If she was in Wolf Hall as an NPC, would she be a character who skips all of her classes to play sports and nap, or a studious bookworm? I've certainly played her as both of those in different playthroughs, haha... So I guess having a new PC replace her in Wolf Hall is just like another path in Magical Diary's existing framework of alternate realities. Smile

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

One thing we're doing differently in Wolf Hall is little scenelets for each spell you learn, where the professor demonstrates and explains how the spell works, giving you a few hints for how you might actually use it in a dungeon scenario. (In-character language, of course, so no one's going to say "It does 5 HP damage'.) Hopefully these will be fun flavor text to read.

It also means you'll have to attend specific classes to unlock combination spells, and you can only unlock one spell per class, so that the little scene can play correctly. So even if you cheat and max all your skills at once (I know someone will!), it's still going to take you a while to actually learn all the spells.

I'm really excited for this! The original Magical Diary was a lot of fun, and with better art and more experience under your belt, I'm confident that Wolf Hall is going to be awesome. Also, I'm totally fine with the option restriction for the PC. Does this mean that the PC is going to have a more defined personality than Mary Sue, or is it mostly just a backstory thing?

Another question: if Wolf Hall is set the same year as the original Magical Diary, will there be a student that replaces Mary Sue as a roommate to Ellen an Virginia?

As if summoned by the magic of my obsessions, just replayed Horse Hall and wanted to check in on things. It's good to see progress and don't sell yourself short, I once recorded an entire reading of the first 4 months of Horse Hall and the first month was longer than the others by a longshot.

Super excited there is progress! I am filled with excitement. I don't really like to play as boys very much but thanks to Dream Daddy (don't judge me) the option is growing on me. I'll always prefer G/G and G/B, but beggars can't be choosers! I would probably play Horse Hall anyway, though, just because I'm very fond of the lore. The Angela thing is a great option for Initiation, by the way, because she sucks and we all unanimously dislike her. I replayed Grabiner's route and went 'wow it's not just Damien's route that's right, she is just awful!

It's really nice of you to involve older characters in a more introspective way. I am actually the most interested in Grabiner's content because of the sheer...nature of it all? I really just need to go make a new thread about this because years of reflection on Grabiner has made me appreciate the nuances you put into him more.

Even without Grabiner, though, I am excited. I genuinely forgot 60% of the game and only remembered two exams, so replaying it like it was a new game had me excited to play an actual new game. And the world! I'm so enthralled by the world to this day. It is a little unexpected to hear Mary Sue just doesn't exist (if only because I always assumed the Wolf Hall protagonist was the other potential victim mentioned in Horse Hall.) - but I'm excited to see how her lack of existence changes things. Like will Virginia and Ellen be able to handle their differences in messes? Will Ellen be calmed down when she fails for non magical reasons? Will Ellen find Virginia when she is sick? Will Damien beeline to the wolf hall protagonist or choose a character we already know as his Freshmen? Will Minnie and Kyo resolve as if you were never there, or will there be changes? WILL THERE BE A SPORTS CLUB?

All the same, thanks for rewarding our patience by staying involved in this project. You know I'm basically sold for life, so count me in on this one.

I hope that the pc can stonewall the meanest senior. It would be funny if in the game the pc can say I don't take orders from that person, only to have another order him to walk 1 round around the school at night/after curfew in his underwear and then Grabby sees him and asks him to his office in the morning to yell/ask him why. I know that there is no romance between the two in this sequel, but maybe there can be some interaction? I really want to play this game when it comes out.

When can we play the beta version for Wolf Hall? I really liked Horse Hall! Speaking of Horse Hall-I hope you have another summer madness type sale because I would like to play the updated version. (I wasn't the one who bought the game originally.)

Have you ever thought about creating a game that covers all 4 years they're in school? That would probably be a hefty project but it would be interesting to think about how all your previous choices follow you throughout school.

hanako

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

The last 'madness' type sale was several years ago. It will probably be several more years before there is any chance of such a sale happening again. Sorry, but that's why these things are advertised as special events!

Individual games do sometimes go on sale, both here and on Steam, but I can't tell you when that would be in advance. For one thing, I don't know. I don't have plans. I usually have some kind of discount for the holidays but exactly when and how much and for how long, I only make up when it happens. Sometimes I forget all about the holidays and the sales are really late. The only way to know is to subscribe to the reminders and find out when they happen.

All I really want for Wolf Hall is a romance with William.

He was my favourite guy in the first game, particularly because he wasn't romanceable. He was just so nice, and I just loved his story and how he ended up in Wolf Hall. Any other writer would have done things differently, and it was a genuine surprise, and a wonderful one, that is one of my favourite storytelling moments ever when he revealed the truth behind his issues with Damien.

Gamer

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

I don't need to romance William. I want an option for William and Damien to get back together (because I like ill-advised romances)!

H

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#40 by H - Dec 30 2017

Oh no! Definitely not that. That was one of the things I disliked about Magical Diary, that there was only one actual valid male romance option. I really disliked the other two, and they had creepy power dynamics. Grabiner's your teacher, and Damion's a creep. I actually did like that everyone is warning you against Damion throughout, and if you don't listen to them, well they're proven right. I thought interesting story, but he is horrid. I'd rather not have another Damion romance, I feel like been there, done that, let's try something new. I'm sure it'll end up being interesting anyway though, and hopefully different.

I did like the women and found those relationships far more pleasing.

William was sweet though, and kind, and nice, and all the moreso because he completely refused to date Mary Sue. I really liked him. And I loved how any other story William's hatred of Damion would have related to how Damion hurt either his girlfriend, or his sister, or some female relative/friend who couldn't stand up for herself, and that William punched him in a show of male bravado for that. And that didn't end up being the case, and that it was very personal.

Still have to be super-careful how much I say so as not to ruin any of the surprises, but one feature we've added this time around is a system that takes a little bit of inspiration from Long Live The Queen. No, not dying all the time! But a way of occasionally showing the player how their stats and previous choices are affecting the way the story goes.

The statbar is up on the top now - it's subtle most of the time but it becomes more visible when it's needed (which involves other features I don't want to show right now).

Yes, this is a night-time shot, from a location that wasn't used in the first game. (Most background images will be the same, although some may look a bit diferent because of the change in size and aspect ratio, but there are some new ones and a few things have been replaced completely)

That screenshot is reason enough for me to be excited. I'm so happy you're working on a second game for Magical Diary!!

As for PC I like the idea of stonewalling someone like Angela, just because she's a jerk. Otherwise, I don't really have any dislike for the initiation process.

Based off of your descriptions of WolfPC, it sounds like he's already part of the magical community. Will we also be getting to see scenarios where we can use magic we've learned more often? And will he come with some spells that he already knows at the beginning of the year?

If we could choose what kind of magic he's got an affinity for on our own, a la 'Choose your room' in Tokimeki Memorial style, that'd be pretty neat I think. Starting with a little more base magic in one area and having penalties the others. "Black magic 15, all others 10" or something similar

hanako

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#50 by hanako - Mar 17 2018

No, the PC starts with 0 skill points in the various magics; that's important so that each spell can be explained to the player as it's unlocked (since we have scenes for learning spells now).

Because of his background, though, he does start with more information about certain subjects than a starting player would have, and possibly more than many Horse Hall players. Some of that will be explained when necessary, but otherwise, there is an in-game codex/glossary that will provide a little bit of information on Things The PC Already Knows.

He may also have previously met or known about some of the people at Iris Academy in ways that Mary Sue never would have. In particular, his relationship with Grabiner is very different than the Horse Hall PC's...

I have to say, the sleeker design you've got going for the GUI is really working in your favour! Also, having a handy codex tab on hand is probably a good thing, especially given there's information your character knows that you don't. I assume each entry is "unlocked" when you learn about it through some means? (i.e. learning a certain amount of White Magic might prompt your teacher to explain the Otherworld, adding it as an entry, and such).

I'm seriously looking forward to how much bigger this game seems to be Very Happy

hanako

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#55 by hanako - Mar 26 2018

Because I live to overcomplicate things, the PC in this game has several "personality options". The choices you make early on will push you into one of these types, and now and then, this affects things that the PC says on his own, or changes the choices you have available. It doesn't make a HUGE difference, it's not like you get a whole new route because of it, it just changes the flavor a little to make your character more consistent and more 'yours'.

Which also means that lots of scenes have extra dialog in them that I won't see until like the fourth-or-more time I've playtested it so AAAAGH. And no, we're not going to be open for public testing for a while yet. Laughing

Since it's technically the same year but 'alternate' wouldn't it be better to keep it the same? It would be a fun easter egg for those of us who played the first, I think. And everyone new would still be surprised!

Probably, although the exams are already different anyway (as it wouldn't be much fun to play the exact same puzzles) so.

In that case, you might as well change the spacing of the exams to fit whatever you think would be best for the story and/or gameplay. I mean, not everything will be the same anyway because the actual puzzles are different, so maybe the teachers decided to change around their exam schedule to better fit which puzzles they expect the students to be able to solve at a given time of year?

Can't remember if I ever showed you guys this, but WAY back all those years ago before we changed artists for the characters, we did start making full sprites for some characters who had only used the character-generator in the first game. This was one of Minnie's poses in that original style:

Obviously not quite what she looks like now that we've changed artists, but might interest someone.

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

That image of Minnie makes me wonder what inspires your art direction between games, actually. Do you have an artistic preference for characters, or do you tend to adopt the style of whoever's drawing it at the time? Take the differences between Suki from Horse Hall, and what we've seen of Wolf Hall, where you seem to have gone drastically more "western" and realistic in the style.

On a side note, the house-themed clasp/slide is a cute addition to the uniform Very Happy

hanako

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#75 by hanako - Apr 30 2018

a lot of the time it's mostly down to "who's available" because I don't have a staff artist. Smile

While I appreciated the work the original Horse Hall artist did, I know it was met with mixed reactions by many players. I wanted to give her the chance to carry on with future games anyway because I felt like it would be wrong to just drop her, but her style was shifting further and further in a direction I didn't really like, and she was pretty clearly not interested in the project - communications got slower and slower until eventually I offered to call the whole thing off and she instantly agreed.

I tried out a few different artists, while incorporating the feedback from the first game (the robes, for example, I felt were a little plain and heavy in the first game which made them not much fun to cosplay, so I figured if we were changing artists we might as well consider some style tweaks). This was someone's test version of Minnie, which I didn't think fit the game so we didn't go forward with that artist.

Unfortunately the Wolf Hall sprites were made YEARS ago by an artist I haven't been in contact with in ages, so I may have troubles when it comes to trying to do CGs, if I can't reach her!

Staldice

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#76 by Staldice - Apr 30 2018

Oh wow, I didn't expect such prompt and thorough feedback, cheers Hanako! That was a good read ^^

I actually quite like the newer art style from what I've seen, I feel it's a lot less generic than the cookie-cutter character art for Horse Hall, I imagine now you have a chance to get a lot more in-depth with your designs. On a side note, it's nice to see all this unreleased art, too! Smile

As someone who might be making a fangame for LLTQ, I understand the need for a strong art direction all too well!!

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

The thing I am most interested in seeing is how the Damien romance will play out. I doubt it would be a rehash of the Horse Hall romance, since that would be boring to write, boring to play for those who have played the first game, and would spoil anybody who picks up the HH after WH, so I am guessing no Damien as initiation mentor. But will he still try to seduce you to steal your soul ? Will it be possible to achieve a romance ending without being a complete pushover who agrees to give up their life for their first high school boyfriend and readily forgives him afterward ? (Obviously I don't except Hanako to answer this)

I guess that might sound like harsh criticism against HH's protagonist. Damien was a favourite for players when the game came out, but I wonder if it would not raise commentary on abusive relationships if Horse Hall came out this year ? What with people being a lot more aware of these issues.

Sorry this post ended up sounding so negative. I am really excited for the game, will play all the routes no matter the creepiness, and wish you the best of luck, Hanako. Very Happy

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#88 by hanako - May 14 2018

I'm interested in hearing from people who want to date William - provided that you acknowledge that any comments or suggestions you make may or may not have any effect on what actually gets written. (Obviously I know a lot more about what's going on than you do so suggestions are likely to be way off-base and therefore probably not going to work in the game as it is. Don't say anything if you'll be upset at your suggestions being used OR not being used. It's not stealing if you offered it to me!)

With that in mind, if you're a William fan, what sorts of things do you like about him? What would you like to do with him?

Gamer

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#89 by Gamer - May 14 2018

I like that while William is portrayed as this perfect, big brother-like figure who's kind and smart, he might have a dark side since he was originally sorted into the same hall as Damien. I also like his interactions with Damien in particular though we don't seem to see him interacting with Angela.

With that being said, if I were to date William, I'd like the option to cheat on him or play mind-games with him because I'm evil like that! I want him to think I'm different from Damien or Angela, only to not be that much different from them in the end. It would be cool if I could date both him and Damien at the same time so I could play them both.

I never take "mean" routes in VNs except for completionists purpose, so I would never want to do that... Since you (Hanako) have talked about personality options that are defined by how you act at the beginning, maybe being a cheater could be locked behind a certain personality type, but you have already said that it wouldn't affect the story that much, so I dunno.

Personnally I would like to not always feel that he (who is 3-4 years older, right ?) is always leading the relationship, teaching me stuff and impressing me. He has that "cool big brother" persona which is great, but I don't think would really work in a relationship. I would like the PC to display some knowledge/skills that William would know nothing about, even if it's just being super good at pinball, or know plenty of constellations...
Actually I think that is something I like to see in any relationship where one is expected to "lead" the other, be it because of being older or something else.

Foelhe

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#91 by Foelhe - May 16 2018

One hundred percent agree with Tomo-chan. I'm really not a fan of romances where one person is in charge most of the time, which is one of many reasons the whole seme/uke thing in yaoi gives me hives. Definitely want things to feel balanced between William and Gary Stu, like they're both equals in the relationship.

Also, I like the fact that William is an all-around great guy so I don't want to go too far off that, but it would be great if we could see him admit to some personal flaws, to show he trusts us enough to let his guard down around us. That might be a given, but I might as well mention it.

MillaMaxwell

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#92 by MillaMaxwell - May 16 2018

I really like how William appears to be a nice, kind, reliable person, but he's also much more vulnerable than many of Mary Sue's peers realize when they just see him as the "perfect" older brother/mentor character. I'd like to see him still be the kind and reliable guy he presents himself as, but instead of having a "dark side," maybe have like trust issues or something like that that you can help him overcome during the relationship. I agree that the relationship definitely should be more equal than William leading and Gary Stu following and I think something like that could be nice to play.

I'm interested in seeing his personality get to shine. He's very nurturing as a person and I wonder sometimes if he doesn't need to be nurtured himself, understood, and given compassion. Out of all the cast I definitely read kindness off of him the most- and I want to see other feelings from him too.

I'm very curious as to how the dungeon puzzles were developed in the first game. It seems to me like you could start with a disjunction of different possible stats the player could need, or an idea for an obstacle to overcome, or the set of spells you might expect to have access to. What was your approach look like? Did you make use of the ability to choose when players learn different spells and what they are to design the dungeons in the first game? Does having a set spellbook making developing new dungeons easier, or more difficult in this new game - or are you taking the approach that different people would choose to learn different spells?

Looking forward to the new game, whenever it appears =]

hanako

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#96 by hanako - May 26 2018

It's a lot of back and forth really.

The spells in the first game were largely developed along a logical theory of magic rather than being specifically tuned to be useful. This is somewhat intentional. I think low-level magic SHOULD be incredibly useful - a teeny-tiny bit of magic should have tons of useful possibilites if cleverly applied. And I am also fine with having total red herrings thrown in that will never be useful, so that the player has to actually be clever about deciding what to use rather than "anything will work if you jam it in hard enough".

Dungeons usually developed around the concept of what the primary obstacle for each dungeon would be, and then got tweaked around in order to try and accommodate different magical approaches. "Cross a hole" "Find a hidden exit" "Deal with a monster" etc. I'd generally like it to be possible to succeed if you either went all-out in any one color or if you balanced all your colors. For White Magic this doesn't always work out, as the nature of White Magic makes it a better support category than a main category.

I've tweaked the mechanics a little in Wolf Hall to try and encourage people to pick a favorite color to focus on rather than just balancing, because too many players do that instinctively and it's more boring to watch LPs if everyone does the same thing. Laughing Some spells have also been adjusted to give them more uses, and one or two spells have changed drastically. There's also some adjustments to the beginning of the game, where I'm forcing players to learn the first spell in each color before they can branch out. So now I can count on every player having those basics available and take that into account when planning. EVERYBODY has 'Light', so I'm making a lot more use of darkness as a dungeon feature.

hanako

Re: Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

#99 by hanako - Jul 18 2018

There's quite a lot of playable game already, but due to the structural plans, it's not going to be available for a while yet. Basically right now we are trying to get at least skeletal versions of all the dungeon exams up and running (we expect there will still be a lot of bugs to iron out later). The reason for this is to be certain of exactly what art we need to polish up the dungeons with.

When the dungeon looks right, we can then run a kickstarter, which will offer alpha access to play the game as the rest of it develops. But we need a nice-looking dungeon for screenshots/videos for that.

Plotwise I've written almost all the way up to Christmas (minus some dungeon stuff that needs to be updated when we know how the art looks so we can do proper tutorials, etc), so when testers get in there will already be a good amount of game to play. All the spell-learning scenes are completed, and the second semester generally moves at a faster pace, so it's more than halfway in terms of writing.

I am aiming for the KS to be sometime this year. Hopefully.

So if the surprise is a very unlikely person being datable, I would guess... I don't really know, actually. I was gonna say Potsdam, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who want to date her. I would be very surprised at Kyo being datable, but not sure people would go "whaaaaat" over it. And I feel every minor character has their fans, so...

Speaking of Potsdam, I believe she was a popular choice in the old thread. Perhaps she'll cause a lot of surprise for those who haven't read the thread. Or maybe... you can date one of those creatures in the dungeon exams, like a Manus or Hodag? Probably not (maybe more of a suitable route for a Snake/Toad student?), but that will surely cause a "whaaat" reaction. I'm fine with anyone though Laughing

Yes, Ellen is returning as a love interest. Things will be a little different, since WolfPC is obviously not her roommate, so doesn't see her around all the time or know her in the same way. The reason he notices her is... well, you'll find that out later.

Wow, I didn't pop in the forum for a while, and there are all these new reveals !
Since I don't know anything about Barbara I'm not as excited about her as I am about the other romances, but I look forward to meeting her.

And the thing about the protagonist hiding his true identity is great ! One of the things I thought was a shame about Horse Hall was the lack of an overarching plot. It felt like the romances were very self contained and it was overall a story about going to an exciting school, making friends and dating. Which is fine ! Great even if that's what you're looking for. But I love mystery plots (or reverse mystery plots, since you are the one hiding something...) so I am all the more hyped for the game.

Now for some speculation on the MC... We don't know a whole lot about the wizard society (and I've forgotten what we learned) it's not that easy to guess why he would want to hide his true identity. On top of this, Grabiner is helping you, so you probably don't have nefarious intents, unless you are hiding them from him.
I see several reasons :
- He is from the Otherworld (sorry if that's not the right name), so masquerading as a human either to avoid stigma or carry out a secret mission.
Unlikely because while it's possible for Grabiner to be friends with a non-human family, I don't think he would go along with the masquerade.
- He is from a family that was ostracized from the wizard society due to heinous crimes, so he's hiding either because he wouldn't be allowed to attend or because he would face bullying.
- He is only hiding something like his place in the family. For example, his older brother who was engaged to a rich heiress died, so his parents are disguising him as his brother to get the heiress.

I don't have any more guesses. What do you all think ?

My own theory has always been that WolfPC got into trouble due to mixing magic and technology, like how Ellen did in the previous game. This also allows him to add to the world-building, as while we were told that mixing magic and tech is super bad, we never actually got a straight answer on why, and the WolfPC would be a great way to get that answer. Either way, since doing that seems to be considered super-bad by everyone in the know, it gives a very good reason why WolfPC would need to conceal their identity.

My theory is that it is because he is super famous, and Gary just wants to have a normal experience rather than one of a celebrity.

First rough draft of a Kickstarter video:

https://youtu.be/SPndU-TeL0M

(Don't share this outside the forum please)

It's not final - I probably want to redo the timing on the opening, and I may want to swap the romance and secrets bits near the end to match the music pace better (narratively it makes more sense to save that to the end but musically it's louder first and then quieter so), and I'm not totally sure about the dark corners for text... was hoping to have text with the action instead of separate like the Horse Hall trailer so things would move faster, but it may make it look too messy. Just trying things right now.

Either way, this wouldn't be the final GAME trailer, but as the game is still in development there are limits to how much I can show, many things simply don't exist yet.

Still, there may be some interesting tidbits tucked in there.

Oho! "Tell no one. Do not speak of the Otherworld under any circumstances." I kind of love this.

Second attempt, ruthlessly slicing frames for time in order to be able to put the text up separately:

I'd cut Grabner's "I am a living reminder--" line. The length of his sequence is out of sync with the pacing of the other ones and his dialogue will have more dramatic punch if you leave the first line out. Was thrilled to see the individual at the 28 second mark, if she's who I think she is.

The second version's a lot easier to follow, but I agree that you could probably trim the beginning of Grabiner's speech. It's a lot to read in a pretty short amount of time and throws off the pacing a little, since no one else has that much text. Anyway, I am so excited for this Kickstarter! Very Happy

The new character designs look so so good! I'm in love!
Would love to see maybe a "remastered" version of Horse Hall with the new art style.

That said, I'm extremely stoked for Wolf Hall and will probably buy is as soon as it's out. AAAAAAA. The story seems amazing as well. And I also agree with the comments above mine regarding the trailer.

Third take, cutting Grabiner's speech slightly and adding a bit of Barbara in exchange.

Removing a line from Grabiner's speech definitely improves the pacing of the vid. Smile

If you haven't seen on twitter, I've explained a little bit about who the WolfPC is (and why Grabiner is involved with his secret identity).

Knowing how much Grabiner LOVES his family background, you can imagine how happy he is about all this!

I'd popped back into the forums after filling out my collection of Hanako games in the Winter sale and, man, am I and my SO psyched to hear that Wolf Hall has some forward momentum!
So, I suppose, NEW BOOBS are a strong draw, but over time, better story wins out. -Hanako

I've read the posts on twitter about WolfPC's background. It's very interesting! I look forward to learn more about his family when playing the game. One little thing that stood out to me: he's using a false name (the name the player gives him, right?) while studying at Iris Acadamy. I wonder if his real name will be revealed at some point...

So here's a thought for you to consider.

William is assigned to look after WolfPC, so he'll be his senior during Freshman Initiation.

How will that affect the other freshman/senior pairups?

Well, o' course William can't be Ellen's senior during Initiation, and that means Damien's looking for another freshman. Y'know, it actually would make a lot of sense if Damien tried to become Ellen's senior, come to think of it. Seems like Damien's actively targeting wild seeds.

It means Ellen might not end up developing feelings for William if he wasn’t her senior so she wouldn’t have someone trustworthy to show her the ropes.
