Sequel Talk - Magical Diary Wolf Hall

#1 by hanako - Jul 7 2011

This thread involves current plans for future games.

These games are NOT actually being written at the moment and as such, information is subject to change.

So here is what you know about Wolf Hall so far:

1. The main character will be male.

2. The main character will not be wildseed.

3. Damien is a pursuable character.

4. Minnie is a pursuable character.

5. Grabiner is not a pursuable character.

... I know more than that, but I'm not saying!

Oh man, this has got me interested already! Especially number 4 ^^

So Pastel definitely won't be a romance candidate since her story arc is going to be told in the Butterfly Hall game correct? At best she can be a 'secondary' or teaser romance (like YMMV Big Steve or failed romance attempt! Kyo or one sided crush William were in Horse Hall).

So what is known from hunting around is that the Wolf Hall PC is also an exchange student. Will it be Year One student again (if you know western comics almost a What If or Elseworlds deal with instead of a Wild Seed Girl What if an Exchange Student boy had entered Iris Academy - how would they have changed the lives and events of this first year).

So I'm going to make wild assumptions and my hopes Wishlist here then.

Assumptions: it'll be the five romances again with some teaser friendships/one sided crushes/ and that it will split three female/two male to coincide with Horse Hall's three male/two female balance.

Hopes:

There will be a Snake or Toad full romance (since there's a confirmed Butterfly already woot!).

There will be some kind of weird crush/powerplay/romance with Potsdam. Just because a woman is presumed to be past her birthing years doesn't stop her from being desirable. Go cougar dramatically Potsdam!

Angela for romance! She can try to out Damien damien and we will all be torn between wanting to romance her just because and wanting to break up with her before she breaks up with us!

Also Manuel. He's just so damn cute I want to squish him, but he was barely in it. *squishes*

Now don't tell me how wrong I am. Let me bask in my imagination for like six months until alpha/beta comes out and then I can squee about what is actually available.

*bounces* I'm excited for the next game and also whatever small project Hanako and Spiky are working on between installments. Very Happy

@ perch

You read my mind! I totally want to explore cougar Potsdam - there is so much going on with her that is fascinating and I want to know MORE!

I love that Minnie is an option and exploring a M-M relationship with Damien and seeing how differently he handles a guy will be really interesting.

I'd also like to see a Snake/Toad. Bring on the Suki love! While I very much want to romance Big Steve and Balthasar, I think they may work better with a female protaganist? Especially a Butterfly girl. Smile

Manuel, on the other hand, I think would be great with a Wolf boy.

I also want to know if we'll get to meet properly the blond boy from the first Green class (I think it was Green?). I don't think we see him again in Horse Hall, but he raised pretty interesting issues in that first bit so I'd like to find out his story.

I'm so so excited at the teasers... Very Happy

Since everyone's talking about romance, here's some other stuff I'd like to be able to do (either in this game or a later sequel).

*Join the chorale club.

*Actually WIN the presidential election.

*Try out for the musical.

*Learn more about the minor characters like Luke, Logan, Raven, and Balthazar. Especially Raven - the Snakes seem like an interesting bunch.

*Have more opportunity to cast the different spells you learn.

*Visit the Otherworld.

hanako

#6 by hanako - Jul 9 2011

... If you saw the Otherworld, you wouldn't see it for very long...

Spazzbunny

#7 by Spazzbunny - Jul 9 2011

Mmm, I pretty much agree with everything here. The only thing I disagree with is the Potsdam thing. >.< Too much Squick for me there considering her implied to be Super Old age. Grabby's age is the limit for how I feel comfortable. Outside of that and I question the basic mores of a character. That'd probably be the only route I'd ever avoid. xD

I definitely want to see more Snake and Toad kids though, since they all seem adorably crazy. I especially want to see more of Suki and Big Steve! Especially Big Steve. He's too fantastic for words. ^^

I think, Potsdam aside, the only character I don't want to see as an available romance for Wolf Hall (or Toad Hall) would be Luke, unless he is also available for a girl's hall as well. That's just a personal bit err though.

Also, as a person studying theatre, I would love to be involved in the musical! I'd also like to learn more about the other clubs that the school offers. Surely they don't just have Choir, Sports, and Theatre! ...At least, I hope that a school full of magical and creative beings would have more that than...

I'm also pretty curious about Blonde Boy from Green class. I tried to find him again, but he never popped up. That just makes me more curious, though! >.<

Well, I'm definitely excited for the upcoming game. ^^ Good luck working on it!

That reminds me... that one girl... with the dark purple hair.. I forget her name now... it's like on the tip of my tongue... who was she again and wasn't she a snake also?

EDIT: Oh I remember, Raven was her name, I'd like to see her also! And some other professors too would be nice.. maybe one for each magic color, no?

junsei7

#9 by junsei7 - Jul 9 2011

I totally agree with the hopes of being able to join some of the other clubs.

Also thought I would put in my two cents for hoping to be able to pursue William in the same game as being able to pursue Damien - it would make for a nice dynamic there I think. And I think a Wolf would be good for William. Smile

LittleKittie

#10 by LittleKittie - Jul 9 2011

All ideas are amazing, but I wouldn't like to date Postdam (is that how we write her name?), and someone said Manuel name, he's so cute *-* If I could I would steal him for me XD And more clubs ya!!!
When I was playing the Horse Hall my brother wanted to play, he was so happy when I told him there was going to have Wolf Hall XD

perch

#11 by perch - Jul 9 2011

See I don't have a problem with Potsdam for her age. I like vampires and Merlin and Dragons-in-human-form and such things so her being 200+ doesn't squick me in terms of romance. Though her being her and obviously playing at both dangerous and adult games is interesting. She's worldly, plus secretive and more than willing to sit back and watch the action play out between her students and I like that about her. In ways that Grabiner isn't because of his past.

I don't mind if she's never a romantic option (she would make a very interesting side line character that is always there, but never involved intimately), but I'd love to see how she reacts to a PC that knows and has grown up in the magical world giving her a romantic valentine versus a wild seed. I'm intensely curious to see how my Stu's interactions with her will change based on his just knowing more about the magical world and how important promises and vows are.

FantasyFan

#12 by FantasyFan - Jul 9 2011

Something I noticed about Damien - if you don't take his path, you hear that he was expelled for doing something to a boy, could that be the PC for Wolf Hall?

Pixelen

#13 by Pixelen - Jul 10 2011

Ahh I can't wait for this to come out! Despite the great reply value of Horse Halls I seem to have got through it quickly (probably from playing it obsessively for two days!) Would love to date William in the next one.

Bombermans

#14 by Bombermans - Jul 13 2011

Well, I wouldn't like to see Postdam at her age as a romantically involved character XD. It would be like dating your grandmother or something O_o. But, since this is a magical world, I suggested (and now I do it again XD) the possibility of being able to date a younger Postdam. Something like a youth potion or similar XD

I also want to see the OtherWorld. You could go there with a magical artifact or spell that protects you, or Damien could take you there protecting you, I don't know...

Having more opportunities to use the spells that you learn (as others have said some posts before) would be a wonderful idea, too. Not only in Dungeons, but in the whole school life!

And more dungeons! Since you are going to be a Wolf, it'd be great to be able to sneak into dangerous dungeons and make troubles to yourself! XD

maldemer

#15 by maldemer - Jul 14 2011

Wait, would the game take place at the same time as Horse Hall, or the following year?

hanako

#16 by hanako - Jul 14 2011

They take place at the same time, in slightly alternate continuity (Mary Sue is not there, but the new Wolf student is). You'll see some of the same events but from different perspectives, and you'll see things that you couldn't see as a Horse.

lionel

#17 by lionel - Jul 15 2011

My Wishlist for things to see in Wolf Hall:

Romanceable Characters:
Girls:
Minnie (confirmed)
Raven (of the snakes, I thought she was the cutest)
Pastel (of the butterflies, she seems like an interesting character to 'tame' ^^)

Boys:
Manuel (cute kid), would love to see him as your roommate especially

Teachers:
Maybe a young/new teacher... I'm sure this whole school doesn't just have Potsam and Grabby, so that leaves 3 other schools of magic, perhaps a PE teacher and/or study hall, so more options can be there or having a hall rep be the 'supervising' student or student teacher for those areas.

Perhaps more exams or class-interactive discussions... exams at the end of the month are fine, but say projects or answering questions during the year, as some weeks can be very 'quiet' I suppose. Can also work in the use of certain magic for non-exam things (like using Spirit sight in Horse hall for certain points in the story).

Maybe the choice to visit certain characters? So say you miss an event that isn't TOO time critical you can trigger it manually... like some weeks you may just want to talk to Damien again, and I'm sure our PC isn't locked in his room without social contact for the entire month!

So yeah, not knocking Horse Hall, I found it definitely worth it, and these are just some ideas and such that could be thought about!

Darinenelle

:D

#18 by Darinenelle - Jul 18 2011

yes, this is a wonderful idea. I really want another game.

i think it would be a good idea to make a few new characters though, to spice it up, ya know?

Of course, since its a boy, im a little disappointed. Mostly girls play this, and i think its gonna stay that way, so im more partial to a female character.

i think it would be nice if we could pick which hall we are in.

Or if it was a year other than freshman. More exciting spells and privileges, ;)

I'm sure whatever you make will be fantastic though!

Symfonicat

My Wishlist

#19 by Symfonicat - Jul 19 2011

1. I would love to play as a senior and order some Freshman around...Maybe even have them as a romance option Wink

2. Maybe it's just me but it'd be interesting if there was a genderbent character, who for some reason was in a boy/girl hall.

3. I'd like some more teachers, maybe a slightly crazy one with slightly crazy but interesting projects.

Maybe some interactive class events like pop quizzes and projects...group work that could help you earn merits. It was a bit hard to earn merits, well, maybe that's just me.

Just my wishful thinking Very Happy

Oh, I can't wait for this!

I got through Horse Hall, and I was so sad, thinking there wouldn't be any more. But now this forum has me all excited!

I'd love to see William as a full option, though. Maybe Manuel, because I love him for being the adorableness that he is. As for female options, I can see a ton of possibility.

I'm so excited now!

Amphigorey

#21 by Amphigorey - Jul 21 2011

I agree about Potsdam as a possible option (my first thought was "Ooh, fantasy Harold and Maude!" XD), if only to balance things out; even if not it's not romance, it'd be nice to have some sort of path where the main character got to know her better. Besides, she's adorable.

I'd love Suki as an option too. The glimpses we got of her in HH very much intrigued me; I could see her getting in trouble for trying to sneak some sort of monster into her room and the main character helping her out in order to win her heart. And Raven, of course; I agree about Snakes being underrepresented.

And *yay* for full Minnie path Very Happy

For gameplay ideas, I'd like to be able to explore the school and visit characters on your own, instead of always having to wait to be invited places. It makes sense that the HH protagonist would be shy about it, because she's wildseed and not used to it, but it seems like a student who was used to magic and knew about the school already would be more adventurous.

(oh, and a chance to actually be in the school plays! /theatre geek)

sayuri

#22 by sayuri - Jul 22 2011

I think any Potsdam romance should be a pseudo romance, kind of like William's or Pastel's. An actual romance is kinda... ugh... like dating my grandmother.

Anyway, here would be my desired love interests.

Boys:
Damien
William
Manuel

Girls:
Minnie
Raven

I'm not sure who'd I want for the third girl, lol. I suppose Angela. I really think there should be another Grabiner-esque romance. A girl who plays hard-to-get and is cold. Angela fits into that category, but I just didn't like her much in the first game. I am intrigued to find out more about her, though.

Manuel is pretty freaking adorable, and a complete uke. He should definitely be a romance ^_^

I may be alone here, but it was heavily hinted at that William and Damien had a thing way back when. Not to mention turning down both the MC and Ellen. And Virginia saying he's 'sworn off girls'. You get the picture.

oooooh here's an idea?

what about Luke or Logan as love interests?

or...Luke AND Logan! O.O

twins...hahah

Confused Shaman

#24 by Confused Shaman - Jul 26 2011

Just a thought, but since we're able to go to the library every Saturday, maybe include an option that would allow you to volunteer there, so that you could get extra demerits. This would be pretty useful in the beginning if you want to run for Treasurer, but you miss both of the events that get rid of the ten demerits Prof. Grabiner gives you.

Also, since there's supposedly not any computers in the school, as a part-time librarian myself, the library would probably take a bit of work to keep organized and running smoothly, even if its collection isn't that big.

And maybe the main librarian could even be a romanceable option, haha.

I LOVE this idea! I'm studying Library Science, and I would LOVE to see the school librarian-- especially as a romanceable option!

Also, Luke and/or Logan would be an AWESOME romanceable option for us yaoi fans.

I have yet to see a suggestion I don't like, although personally, I would avoid the Potsdam route if there was one (I already avoided Grabiner's like it was the plague). I would love to have the option of a threesome. After all, in the dance scene, doesn't it say something like the people came with their "date (or dates.)"? That implies threesomes... Or more-than-threesomes. Embarassed And I'm pretty sure everyone wants a fully-romanceable William. I would also like it if, instead of Damien being automatically expelled no matter what, we could make evil plans to get William and Damien back together, if we didn't choose either of them. Twisted Evil (Actually, I'm debating on wheter or not I should try my hand at a fanfic involving that pairing. I'm hooked. Embarassed ) Come to think of it... Idea Anyone else want a threesome between the Wolf PC, Damien, and William? I'm thinking it would be the best of both worlds... Twisted Evil

First of all: *jumpjumpjump* LOOOOVE the idea!!

Well, here are a few suggestions/ hopes for the sequel:

-DEFINATELY guy-love!!
-Datable Manuel (cutie!)
-Datable Suki (adorable weirdo!)
-Datable Barbara (y'know the "ninja" with the knives ;) )
-The opportunity to select which club to join
-Being able to actually become president
-More interaction with minor characters
-Maybe a character sheet in the beginning of the game, so that the player can choose some dominant characteristics for JonDoe (even though he's already kinda represented by being a "wolf") which slightly change the conversations in-game
-More scene-shots, e.g. showing the couple holding hands, hugging, kissing, playing, maybe even fighting/ arguing (?)

Also, I hope to hear more about the relationship between magic and electronics? Maybe a classic female best friend falling in love with JonDoe's greatest rival? Rivalry in general?

Your cuddly emo ;)

I can't wait for this one even more so for the possible Yaoi!!!

A list of things I'd love/hope to see are

- William, Damien, Logan, and Donald as possible guy options
- More club options and a chance to join the musical and theater. More options to attend these clubs
- More chances to use magic inside and maybe outside of school.
- Scavenger hunts like with teams of two
- Options to go on dates
- More dungeons!!! I liked exploring and using magic
- Cute romance scenes
- I like the idea of a character sheet and maybe being able to choose some characteristics of Gary-sue

Ohhh! I'm so excited about this! Even if the character is male >.<
I will play because of Damien! I loved him in the 1st game, will Ellen and Virginia be there as well?
Potsdam would be a fun love interest, I think, she's just so unpredictable and sweet <3

Nebel2002

i guess, i'm one of the few who's against yaoi... oh well, i just hope it won't be very easy path that you could choose without realizing...
but i'm looking forward to sequel. i'm sure it will be as great as first game.

and this:

Yumeshojo

#35 by Yumeshojo - Aug 8 2011

As to the PC being male - I can just pretend I'm a girl, anyway. Behold the power of imagination~! But I'm excited about being in a different dorm with different roommates and love interests - i'm hoping for Manuel Smile I hope these games are super hits so you keep making them, I'm just dying for a Snake Hall! Suki and Raven for possible roommates? AWESOME!

And is the crossover character gonna be a recurring thing? I mean like how Damien was in Horse Hall, but he'll be romancible in Wolf, too, so is the next game (if there is one...pleasepleasepleaseplease) gonna have a Wolf romance carry over with another side to it? (Obviously I'm getting at having Grabiner back again for Snake. Man, I'm way to excited over a game that hasn't even been mentioned. Stopitstopitstopit before you get dissapointed) I really wanted to meet Aloysius, though Smile Ideas, ideas...

and yes, a second year would be wicked awesome, but if that never happens, there is still fanfiction~! For I am totally concocting a second year story - hey, maybe that could be your next contest lol. ...now that I think about it, does Iris Academy consist of three years or four? Three, right?

Clubs! yes, I am hoping for more clubs! I'm not really a sports person, so sometimes being a Horse bothered me (again with me begging for Snake Hall. Shut up, Yume, shut up!) so I'm hoping for a lit club or band or like suggested earlier, working at the library.

I would also like to agree that Big Steve is AWESOME and I would love to see Balthasar's face (a romance path, maybe? eventually?). Lol gotta love how no one seems to be interested in Jacob heh heh

Yumeshojo:

I know! I noticed that too - I think it's because he seems clearly interested in girls, so I'm sure there will be some love for him with a Snake or Butterfly. Smile Poor Jacob - I think there's an awesome story hiding in there...

perch

#37 by perch - Aug 11 2011

I assumed Jacob would be getting more spotlight in the next game...though if Wolf PC is going to be the other side of the Minnie/Kyo love triangle...

I don't mind Jacob, he's just low on my fresh, never-been-romanced interest list after Big Steve, Pastel, Manuel, Balthasar, Minnie, William, Suki, Luke, Logan, Raven, Barbara....but hey, he's ahead of Kyo and Angela!

FantasyFan

#38 by FantasyFan - Aug 11 2011

Oh, something else I'd like to do in a future game is learn more about the Rose and Wasp. I mean, you can only call on them for two things in the first game - I'd like my character in a future game to be able to actually carry out revenge for the Rose and Wasp or something.

Indalecio

#39 by Indalecio - Aug 11 2011

I apologize in advance for being a wet blanket, but why not just not make this a expansion pack for the current game with the current main character? If you're going to make a game from a guy's perpective, I think it would make sense to not make it yaoi. Of course, I suppose it does depend on whether you're marketing it primarily to guys or primarily to girls.

FantasyFan

#40 by FantasyFan - Aug 11 2011

It's not going to be all yaoi - we already know that there will be a possible romance with Minnie. It'll probably be like the first game, with possible romances with both sexes.

hanako

#41 by hanako - Aug 11 2011

The intent is to make romances of both sexes, with more straight than not, like in the first game... it's just that most of the eager forum posters are more interested in the male possibilities. Smile

I've been holding off on saying anything more because this game isn't even being written yet, just vaguely planned... but the plans also include William and psych! Not telling anymore Razz Someone female. as dating options. Nothing is guaranteed, but that's the expectation.

There will also be at least one more female option, and even I don't know who it is yet. I haven't decided. Eager speculation on the female front is more likely to sway my opinion than on the male ones because I have plans there already. Smile

FantasyFan

#42 by FantasyFan - Aug 11 2011

I didn't highlight those names because I want to be surprised, but if she's not already planned, I would love to date Raven at some point in these games. She looks like an interesting character from what little we see of her.

Oh, maybe you and Raven could perform in the musical together.

perch

#43 by perch - Aug 12 2011

@ Hanako

Being cruel again I see. Very Happy My top girl pick was Pastel, but she's for later so I'll put her aside. *sniff* (That never works) Otherwise I want to see Minnie's love triangle play out and I'm curious about either Suki or Raven. I feel like Angela is for another day since Damien is coming back and I don't know if I could handle having to deal with Damien (again) and Angela in one game.

There's Isobel too, but she's happily in a relationship and I don't want to see that messed around with and I've never seen Barbara though she sounds amazingly amazing and I want to see her. Guy wise my heart belongs to Big Steve (but you've stated he's 'special' and wasn't supposed to get a relationship line). Followed by Manuel, Balthazar, William, Luke, Logan...there are a lot of guys. Did I phase out a ton of girls or were there a lot of non-romance guys in the first game?

So my completely unasked for picks for Wolf Hall:

Guys: Damien (guaranteed) ::COUGHBigSteveCOUGH:: William or Manuel
Gals: Minnie (guaranteed) Raven or Suki and then third slot I'd love to see a new girl. Someone brand new that hasn't been seen or mentioned yet so they're fresh and different (and I'm not loading up my wish list with Snake/Toad kids exclusively).

hanako

#44 by hanako - Aug 12 2011

Mmm.... should I correct a small misunderstanding some people have picked up about certain characters? (I'm intentionally not correcting the BIG misunderstandings because it amuses me that people think that. The truth should come out eventually.) It's not a big deal, though. Either it'll come up at some point or it won't matter anyway.

The known female freshmen onscreen are Minnie, Pastel, Suki, and Raven. There are a number of other freshmen girls who never show up onscreen, including Barbara, Lena, Liz, Anisha, and Susan.

Senior girls who have appeared onscreen are Angela, Isobel, and Corrinna. I don't think I've specifically mentioned any sophomore girls, although I have notes for at least one. Junior girls mentioned were Laurel and Winnifred. So it's not like there weren't any girls around... just that HorsePC may not have paid as much attention to them? Smile

perch

#45 by perch - Aug 12 2011

@hanako

Thanks! I vote for yes in clearing up misunderstandings...wait. Wait. No I don't. Hold on. I've got a clear picture in my brain. I see lots of Pastel and Big Steve in my PC's future. Yeah.

I'll just enjoy that until Wolf Hall comes out and I find out what's actually going on. Very Happy I am very easy to please.

Spazzbunny

#46 by Spazzbunny - Aug 14 2011

Mmm, I think most of the yaoi desires comes from the fact that we haven't really gotten to meet many of the female characters. That and the fact that most of us are girls. xD I'd personally like for things to stay in the format that the Horse Hall had (three of the opposite gender and two of the same), but I'm also a stickler for continuity.

As far as the girls go, I really want to get to know Suki better. She's definitely interesting. I'm also curious as to what a path with Angela would be like (I sense a possible tsundere), but I'm not necessarily jumping out of my seat to root for her. The mystery sophomore girls would be nice to at least see snippets of, and I like the name Anisha. ^^ That's just my two cents on the girls though.

I'm a guy. I'm straight. I like romance games with good stories. Enjoyed Horse Hall. Preordered it, played through the alpha/beta builds. Looking forward to being able to play a guy with gal romance options in the sequel.

Just throwing this in here since the forum doesn't have many comments leaning my way.

I would love to see the next 2 years of Horse Hall`s story line. I mean, you fight through the whole year to get your loved one, and when you finally get, that`s it, nothing else...kinda sad...XD
True, we get a small message telling how its went on in the future, but I think the future is determined through much more than just a single year.
If you are in great terms with someone this month, it does not mean it will keep on the next.

The second year begins. Along with it, new students arrive and everything may change. The one you love may graduate and you WILL feel lonely(wahaha! its a cuuuuuurse! XD). Even if he/she doesn't, will you(and your lover) be able to keep loyal? New magic to learn and more tests to pass. Events you couldn't go because you were a freshman are now available. You and your friends will meet new people and maybe you will have less time together. So much to learn, so much to do, the second year may be one even better than the first.
Then, finally, third year! Here you are close to graduate. This may be your last chance to change yourself before entering adulthood. All the hard work you put to learn many magics on the first and second years would make all the difference in the last year, when everybody should be prepared to take the next step on life. New problems arrive, "What will I do in the future? What are my dreams?", "Am I walking in the right path?", "Should I have as much fun as possible now and make memories to remember forever?", "Should I get revenge on the guy who made my life a mess before graduating?", "Will my friends remember me after we part?", and so on.....
While on the second year one may not be worried about the future, on the third year you need to choose a true path, be it your true vocation, what you do best, or what you think its safe, cool or easy.

Well, all great to think and all, but here came the main problem:
In doing a second and third year, the story will branch more then ever! If you have, lets say, 8 paths in one year, on the second you may branch more 8 paths and more 8 paths at the last year. multiply all and you will have no less than 512 story paths!!!! Ok, there ARE ways to cut those down and make it more viable, like things that are bound to happen and you can't avoid it as festivals or events partial related to you where you are not the main focus but any way, its tons of work!

To finish, if you ever make a sequence or a alternative(the way I call when its not the same story but the same context. Yes I'm talking about another hall's story.), I'm sure to buy it. ^^

So, would this WolfPC also a freshman?

- got to pusue Minnie
Okay, do you guys realized that there're Jacob and Kyo run after her? Do you dare enough to step in? XD

In any way, I'd love to see more new characters, since the current unpursuable characters seemed like they are just some side characters. *shrugs*
Or maybe it just because HorsePC was too ignorant? Question

hanako

#52 by hanako - Aug 20 2011

Well, they are side characters in the first game because they're not the major people that HorsePC interacts with, so at this point you know very little about them. They'll look rather different when they're the people you're spending all your time with!

The speculation people make about some characters is waaaaaaaaay off the mark. Smile But you wouldn't know that yet because you've only barely seen these people. You know their names (in most cases) and roughly what they look like (in only some cases, and appearances are likely to update anyway when they become main characters) but not a lot else...

I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but I think it would be great TO RECEIVE A VALENTINE (other than Damien), cuz seriously I was really looking foward to receive them, you send you friends friendly ones and no one gives you ONE! I was really sad at first...

You can receive valentines from several people, although you get more if you're playing as treasurer and adjust the price of valentines to $1.

Damien, Donald, Virginia, Ellen, and Minnie can all send HorsePC valentines.

Wow. I've just come off a three-day bender playing Magical Diary (one path per day, stretching it out so that I can savor the romance Wink ), and I am extremely excited to learn that there are at least plans for more games in this universe! I would probably be MOST excited about a sophomore year for Horse Hall, since I got really attached to all of my Sues and want to know what's going to happen to them next, but I understand that there's probably major issues with programming a direct sequel to a game with as many different possible paths and endings as this one has. (Not to mention that hanako might not want to just keep writing the same story forever.)

...That was a really off-topic digression. What I mean to say is that I would love to see what happens in Wolf Hall! Particularly if the main character gets to know some of the same freshmen as Mary Sue, but from a different viewpoint. As a big fan of the Donald romance path, I think it'd be really neat to get to know him as a guy friend, especially if you got to be his roommate.

Personally, I don't have any huge preferences for romantic prospects, since all the characters that we see onscreen are very well fleshed-out, but I think it'd be a little bit weird to have a Potsdam option, since she strikes me as being planted firmly in the "slightly dotty, yet frighteningly astute mentor" role. I feel that the romance path with Grabiner worked, in part, because he never made any effort to be friendly with students, so earning his respect or whatever felt like a big accomplishment.

I'm really excited to hear that Minnie will be a romantic option, because I developed a great affection for her character in my play-throughs of Horse Hall. I always tried to intervene for her when Kyo started getting creepy and violent, and I really like the extra interaction that you get with her if you wind up married. It will be really cool to witness her storyline first-hand, and maybe even be able to help her out when things get rough.

I'd also be really pleased to see more of Jacob, since, if you win the election for Treasurer, you really only encounter him a few times. (I haven't played through Virginia's path yet, though, so maybe I just haven't unlocked all of his scenes.) He'd make an interesting option for a teaser-romance, like Pastel was in Horse Hall. (I'm also adding my voice to the chorus of players who are begging for William to be romanceable by a female in some game down the line. I know he was involved with Damien, but he also went out with Angela, so it's conceivable that he might wind up with a girl, right?)

Other characters I'd like to see more of...Luke and/or Logan, for sure. They both seemed like charming, entertaining guys when you see them in detention or for Bingo games. Manuel is adorable, and he seems really timid, kind of a like a male version of Ellen (if you're not on her path) and would make a cute roommate or friend. It would also be really cool to get to meet some of the named characters that you don't ever actually see, such as Susan, Corinna, or the mysterious Barbara. More Snake girls in general, I think, would be neat. (I'm a bit biased, since my first Sue got the Damien ending that led to her being transferred to Snake Hall at the end of the year.)

As for general gameplay events, although getting the chance to cast spells outside of exams would be neat, what I'd REALLY like to see is the chance for your main character to get invited home with a friend, roommate, or love interest for a holiday (like Spring Break or something). I really enjoyed Ellen and Virginia's tales of their Thanksgiving vacation, and it'd be fun to have something like that for your Wolf. It doesn't even have to be shown, it could just be alluded to after the fact.

Maybe accepting an invitation to visit an NPC over a holiday could be a way to earn (or lose!) a point on somebody's path. Alternatively, maybe the main character could decide to stay at school over a break and do some studying. (Or get into some kind of trouble!) Just a thought brought up by some of the Ellen and Grabiner events. Smile

...This post ran a lot longer than anticipated, so I think I'll cut my fangirling short, at least until I have something more useful to say than "anything hanako could possibly do for this game will be great!" (Though that is how I feel.)

It also occurred to me today that it would be awesome to get to romance Ellen from a male point of view. She's a lot of fun, and there's a lot going on under the surface with her; it'd be interesting to see how her interactions differed with someone who wasn't her roommate (or a fellow girl, for that matter).

New romances with new characters will also be a lot of fun, though. I guess including too many characters who were available in the first game would get kind of boring, both to write and to play. But I still think it's a neat idea to possibly see some of the same events from a different perspective, or to get to hear full versions of some of the conversations that you only eavesdrop on at the very end in Horse Hall.

Yeah...I'm really excited about this. Rolling Eyes I'm kind of a dating-sim nerd.

Wakuseino

#58 by Wakuseino - Aug 27 2011

I kind of agree that it would be great to romance Ellen from a male point of view. Speaking as a guy, she's clearly the most attractive character in the game from my point of view.

Cutting out that, her story has a lot of potential, even though it's "done". What it's really missing is context. Since we saw things from a Wildseed point of view throughout, we don't really know why they're so upset about Ellen's actions, and it's never really adequately explained from what I saw. It would be very interesting to see her actions from a point of view more rooted in the magical world, giving us some context as to why mixing magic and science is a bad idea, and more importantly, seeing how Ellen reacts to the discovery of "why". It would probably have a very different result, and I'm curious about where it would go from there. Of course, it could also get into the vast differences in upbringing between a magical family and a "normal" family, especially considering Ellen's... family circumstances. This already came up to an extent in Horse House, but it would be interesting to see things from the perspective of someone who's in a magic family, struggling to understand precisely what the problem is in the first place due to their upbringing.

Honestly though, it's something I kind of expect us to only see later. I'd like to see it sooner than later, but I can understand enough to know that it'll probably take a while to reach that point, since it requires us to have a bit more context than we have now. One of the big advantages that I can see to the system of doing the same year over for each Hall is that the filter we see the world through changes pretty significantly. I half-expect that by the time Snake or Toad becomes available, our character will be from an Other World. Of course, before we can do that, we need to see things from certain other perspectives first. Starting as a Wildseed for our first playable makes perfect sense contextually, since it gives us a nice foot in the door and the basic knowledge of the world so that we have the same general level of knowledge of our next character.

Now, to put an end to these run-on paragraphs, I'm probably going to be fine with whatever winds up done in the end.

kyoli

you know i hadn't even thought about all the stuff that you just mentioned wakuseino! but reading what you had to write makes me even more excited to see what they will do in the future games. it would be awesome to get to see the magical world from all sorts of other views.

I feel like it would be nice to see another member of Horse Hall... I mean we met... maybe 3, 4 if you count the character you play as. There must be more that you don't get to see. I can personally name about 6 members of Wolf Hall. There must be more horses that we just didn't get to see or hear about. It would be awesome to have a little wild, athletic, and outspoken girl, as opposed to Minnie's quit demureness. That way you get a wider variety of pesonalities. None of the romance options listed at this point seem to be that like that. I would especially love it if the girl made you chase her or that would tease you... maybe you grew up with her? I don't know. It's just an idea.

...um, if you can name 6 members of Wolf Hall you've been adding things to the game that I don't know about! Smile

There were only 4 onscreen, and one more mentioned but never seen. (Jamal) Most halls have only had about 3 members seen so far, to avoid making things confusing with too many characters. More will slowly trickle in over time.

DarthSnuggles

#67 by DarthSnuggles - Sep 11 2011

Originally, I was thinking that I'd really like to see a second year of Horse Hall, but now, while that's still the case, the more I think about it, the more I'd really like to see some things from the perspective of the other halls. I'm especially looking forward to seeing more than the little snippets of the Minnie/Kyo conflict, and maybe being able to actually have a direct effect on that whole situation.

It's probably the thing that nagged at me the most during Horse Hall, because it was set up to seem like a really toxic situation, and it killed me that Mary Sue couldn't really do much to help unless she was married (and even then, the effects of your actions occurred offscreen). I got so frustrated with Professor Potsdam and her lack of responsiveness when you try to talk to her, and I felt really bad for Minnie when I saw that she'd taken Kyo back again for the May Day Ball.

So...yeah. I really kind of would like to see a future game where the protagonist could intervene a bit more directly, either as a rival love-interest, or just a concerned friend. Protecting Minnie would be a good thing, but I'd also be really happy if you could become friends with Kyo and convince him to back off before he gets so crazy.

It would also be cool to get to know and learn more about Jacob, Luke, and/or Logan. Guys act a little differently around other guys than they do when there are girls nearby (or so I'm told by my guy friends, lol) and it would be fun to see what they do when they're not running Bingo games, giving you trick candy, or trying to force your roommate to marry them.

Honestly, the more I think about it, the more awesome I think it will be to get two and (maybe, eventually) four or six different views of the same school year. I'd still love to see a sequel year for Horse Hall at some point, but after giving it some thought, I'm way more excited about the possibility of getting into Wolf, Butterfly, Falcon, Snake or Toad Halls. And I can't wait to see what new characters we meet and what familiar folks have new facets revealed.

I love the fact that we have requests for Damien (who is already confirmed Very Happy) William and Angela.

Since Damien went out with Angela who also dated William at some point, who also dated Damien... XD
I don't know I just find that quite an amusing idea.

That aside as far as my wants go:
Roommates: Donald and Luke (and then we can go prank Virginia for fun. Twisted Evil)

I can't really choose a female romance option, as I haven't seen many who intrigued me, aside from Pastel who is not available. Minnie (Ellen and Virginia too) is more of a friend-type, and other female characters weren't really given enough depth for my interest.
It'll be interesting to see how Damien seduces a Wolf Hall non-wildseed student (Somehow I don't think his Horse Hall flirts are going to work this time!)
It'd be nice to get a better grasp of his personality too. All I trust about him is the fact that I can never trust anything about him! (and that he's sadistic and dangerous... why do I adore him so much!?)

Throw William in and it will be the best romance ever. EVER.

Just a thought, but far, far (farfarfarfarfar...) far away in the future, if the Magical Diary games made enough money to create a game that allowed you to play in one of all six houses, from freshman to senior, it would be a lot of fun.

Too bad that's highly unlikely to happen.

Muse

#83 by Muse - Sep 24 2011

I think the problem of showing Mary Sue doing something like that is that there would have to be one for every candidate or some players would be upset that their OTP didn't get picked.

I'm not sure. I'm fangirly enough to be a Butterfly, I think, but I'd have such a huge problem with sneaking video game consoles onto campus. Probably be excessively wracking up the demerits.

hanako

#84 by hanako - Sep 24 2011

I am somewhat tempted to write a little sidestory for the MarySue/Grabiner path which wouldn't show anything more about THEM exactly, but would explain something else that was happening with an entirely different character at the time. Because that bit of plot only happens if Mary Sue gets married, so it can never be shown in other games unless I make that canon.

However, that bonus can't come out until after the character's normal-route story is available. Smile

If I do at some point write sidestories which are about showing you what characters who *aren't* the main character were up to, would you want them to be in kinetic novel form, or just plain text stories?

kyoli

i like kinetic novel form best i think. i love being able to the characters and the expressions as things are happening!

FantasyFan

#86 by FantasyFan - Sep 24 2011

My preference personally would be small visual novels that have some choices. You know, little ones. I tend to get bored with kinetic novels even if the stories are interesting.

But I would TOTALLY love a sidestory with Virginia's path in any form, even though I seem to be the only one who loves it.

Yumeshojo

#87 by Yumeshojo - Sep 24 2011

DarthSnuggles

#90 by DarthSnuggles - Sep 26 2011

I vote for kinetic novel format, just because, as others have said, it feels more dynamic and interactive than simply reading a plain text story. Plus, artsies!

Stay the same, bitter old man? Whaaaaat?! D: )

I do have a request though. Please add more choices. For romance, for questions, whether they effect anything or not, I like having the choice(s) to develop my character how I want. (Sweet, sassy, cute, weird, etc. )

I loved the Horse Hall trial so i would love to maybe see this sequal.
Defently would love to see Damien and William as choice's, it'd could be fun to see Virgina and Ellen again but say in there 2nd year without the 3rd roomate we create. It'll be cool to find out what a 1st year, Wizard born character would do instead of just wildseed. Smile

As someone else said another verson of Horse hall would be cool, Would love to see what happens with the five choices after the 1st year prehaps at the begianning you could choose which character you ended up with in the 1st game say if you were with ellen or virgina you could see what happens after they get together same with the males like Grabbiner, Donald and Damien, Would'nt mind seeing an advance realinship Though it be a good idea to keep an eye on how you would rate them. I wouldn't mind a whole new story/character/options at all tho ;D
I'm a girl but I don't mind the boy roleplay, I'll just go after guys as usual xD.
I'm not that interested in any guy char I saw so far though, aside from Damien(which will majorly annoy me if he pulls off a similar stunt again), but if I could have at least one other new person it'd be cool.

I really liked the game and I'm looking forward for the second one! William and Damien as datable characters is something that really amuses me as well as Minnie. In the other hand, I would not like the idea of Raven (from Snake Hall) as datable character but Potsdam would be so funny! And since most of the players are female I would prefer more male paths than females, but that's just me. But I would like Pastel as datable character! But not Manuel neither Big Steve, but the point is WE CAN NOW DATE WILLIAM! Very Happy.

And I've been meaning to ask, William is gay or bi? I wonder.

I think this is a world that takes an "everyone is bi" approach. Which I personally have absolutely no problem with, even though in RL I'm straight. -shrugs- Very Happy

kikyomoon

It's kind of strange that the characters don't seem to mind that someone is gay or bi. I personally wished that they could have some reactions...

hanako

#113 by hanako - Jan 10 2012

Yes, it removes a source of conflict, but there are plenty of other settings where one can have gay-related angst. Smile

(This is, after all, Bizarro Fanfiction World.)

However, just because this setting leans towards gender being a non-issue, that doesn't mean absolutely everyone is equally interested in everyone. There are characters who will only be obtainable as certain genders.

ninja.reject

#114 by ninja.reject - Jan 13 2012

If you include girly hairstyles and stuff then I can play and pick a girl name and generally pretend to be a girl! Bc I am one. I guess my character would be technically tran. Hopefully there will be a couple of guys to pursue? I am glad Damien is coming back. I don't know why people hate on him so much. He kept my heart pounding. He is beautiful! And come on, it is a game, I thought the alternative route to happiness was exciting. That was some fantastic writing, Hanako.

marilhama16

#115 by marilhama16 - Jan 13 2012

I don't hate Damien, I don't hate him at all. But in Hose Hall he's path is not my favorite, I think Donald's is waaaay better. And this may sound strange but I've been thinking in Wolf Hall the character will be ''uke'' or ''seme'' (?) I don't think I would want my character to be an uke kind of guy.

hanako

#116 by hanako - Jan 18 2012

marilhama16

And more thins to buy Very Happy

hanako

#119 by hanako - Jan 21 2012

Well, no. It's not possible for any of these games to have a boy-or-girl protagonist, because then it would have to be two completely different games set in two different halls with two different sets of roommates.

Horse Hall is a girls' hall. You play a girl.

Wolf Hall is a boys' hall. You play a boy.

Within the setting it's certainly possible to play a character who looks female but identifies male, and thus could attend Wolf Hall as a boy, but since he would still be referred to as male at all times it would confuse players who didn't understand the idea. (And that idea will make more sense later after you've met certain characters...)

It's kinda hard to have a date for its release when it literally has not been *started* due to the art problem. Smile

There is nothing in existence but a pile of design notes.

When and if it finally is actually able to begin production, I will post about it. If it goes like the first game, it will likely take about a year from that point. Might be more, might be less. There's really no way to know until it's actually being worked on.

marilhama16

#125 by marilhama16 - Feb 3 2012

I've been going through the forum and I've just realized I didn't make a proper ''wishlist'' as some other girls. Well, now it's time then... Very Happy

1.First of all: WILLIAM! I simply loved him in Horse Hall and at first I was really upset that I couldn't date him, but I definitely think a boy would suit him more than a girl, so I guess the PC boy in Wolf Hall is the perfect match for him!
2.And this one is just as important as the first one. I know that some of the girls are complaining about playing with a boy character and are wanting the PC to be like a girly boy. Well, I don't think that, I for once I'm excited about being a boy in the game you know, I would really want the PC to be seme, man, c'mon he is a wolf! He's suppose to be a boy, be manly, be like all the other boys who likes video-games, soccer and stuff (except that the PC is a wizard, oh boy..) I'm not sure if you guys get it but that's pretty much how I see the character, I see him a bit like Donald and Luke.
3.Since Damien and Minnie are for sure in the game and I really hope William will made it that leaves us more two characters! And I would like the other girl to be Pastel! I don't think Hanako will put her as a datable character on this one since the game already have a butterfly girl as a datable character. And I would like to date Luke as well Very Happy. Seriously I loved that guy and since he is a Wolf he is the perfect match for the character!
4.Now the things that I don't want to see in the game: Manuel, Big Steve, Suki, Raven, Balthazar, Jacob, Kyo, Potsdam, Barbara or any Snakes and Toads as datable characters, not in this game at least. But besides William, Damien and Minnie if Hanako create new characters for us to date I won't mind (or she can use some of the girls that were mentioned but not appeared in the game like Liz and Anisha but not Barbara seriously) but since most of the players are girls I think it would be more likely to have 3 boys and 2 girls.
And about Potsdam at first I was excited about dating her but then I don't know, it didn't felt right you know? To me Potsdam is like Dumbledore and the PC is Harry, so could you imagine Dumbledore and Harry as a couple? Sorry I can't.
5.And also I would like to win the election for president and join the chorale and/or the drama club.

Can't wait for the sequel ^_^
I think it will be awesome to view the universe through a different looking glass!
Things I want to see/Looking forward to:
1. Dateable William (yay!)
2. More Ellen? I think she would be neat from a male perspective! Even if it's just as a consistent side character.
3. Bummed that Damien is coming back but there is not Grabiner story (but it's just as well, I would feel a little sad to see Grabby with someone other than my Shar MC).

Grabiner >>>> Damien =p

I'm just dying to see how the Grabiner storyline pans out. The ending felt like the beginning! I'm going to cross my fingers really hard for a continuation of Horse Hall into future year(s) - or just a Grabiner story continuation! Like everyone else, I'm just dying to see how all those different Sues turn out ^_^ (photo gallery is a nice touch, each Sue was different, and you can see which was which when you look back thru the gallery).

Ya I actually messaged them about that!!!!! Probably shouldn't have now that I think about it but I mesaged them:

"Well I know that the Grabiner ending seems to be popular because of the poll. That was certainly my favorite and one of the reasons I was reallly really hoping you came out with more. I came by that ending on accident my first time through and I immediately was in love. So if you made even a fan short of that or oh oh!!!! You should make an epilogue with him. Since he's a noble, having the main character adjusting to the life of a wizard despite her wildseed background and the obstacles she has to go through just to stay by his side. Shoot you could even throw Damien in there for his revenge time for leading him on and then marrying someone else. I would personally pay at least $50 for that epilogue, no joke. I plan on getting Date Warp soon too but Magical Diary continuing in some form is more appealling to me. Anyway please think about it! I'd love you if you did! "

I think that it would be better for the next year. Also i think it would be good to have some new charicters introduced. It would mean more romance and friendship options. It would be realy good if you could duel other charicters. But i think a romance with potsdam is to much, mabey a friendship plot?

Anondyne

#135 by Anondyne - Jun 16 2012

I think Potsdam should not be a romanceable character. Not because of her age, since we know wizards can live for centuries with some green magic thrown in. What's a few decades of age difference in that life span?

I just think that Potsdam is the ultimate badass though, and part of that reason is the mystery of her. All the scenes that you can get for her in MD:HH, it's quite clear that she is playing a game of her own.

For her to be approachable in a romance, she'd have to have a flaw, something that makes her vulnerable. I don't want that for her, I like her much better as the slightly batty, crafty old lady who isn't afraid to kick ass and take names when it's needed. I think all the Mary and Gary Sues to come need their Dumbledore to be nigh invincible, at least for their first year.

LadyWyntre

#136 by LadyWyntre - Jun 26 2012

Have just played through and sigh... want more Grabiner. More more more.

I admit to being disappointed that it won't be a continuation of the same character, but I'm not terribly surprised. It would be very difficult to do from a programming standpoint unless each "romance" path then became its own separate game.

Still. More Grabiner, more Grabiner romance, more more.

I know I'm late in saying this, but whatever. If it can be used then great, if not then it doesn't matter. Still looking forward to the game if/when it comes out.

I found Horse Hall quite entertaining, but I also find it somewhat repetitive over the weeks. Perhaps you could add in little bits of magical hi-jinx when learning spells to add to the story as well as making them chances for skill checks and/or demerits, even going so far as to make them dictate what spell you learn at the time? Like actually make studying or going to the gym worth something other than use in the dungeons so you can see your character grow with what you have them do.

As for romance options all the ones suggested sound quite lovely to go through. I for one would like a tsundere type character or a childhood best-friend type for an added twist into the mix. Maybe even add in a Grabiner-esque type noble female to try to romance?

It's a definite wish list item for me no matter what is added, since I so do love seeing stories from different perspectives.

Would just like to add the opinion that I would love William to be a romance-able character too Very Happy Was a bit disappointed in the first game when I found out he was gay! I'd love to see what kind of easter eggs you plan, as far as HorsePC. It'd be nice if (although, wow, what a pain) you could find a way to export save data from Horse Hall, and load the data into Wolf Hall so you could see how your choices with HorsePC affect situations you see as WolfPC... Wow, that programming. Or at least eggies about hints about stuff that goes on like that... Even with random percentages (with some exceptions, obviously HorsePC won't get Damien if WolfPC does.) about what happens...

Maybe I just like my Horse too much. ;p

4. Minnie is a pursuable character.

5. Grabiner is not a pursuable character.

How about a side romance outside of the campus? Like a childhood friend whom is an ordinary girl? An easily dropped story arc if the player isn't interested. And full of danger and torn feelings if pursued. Leave the hall to be with the non-magical girl (and suffer the mind wipe)? Reveal your powers to her and try to avoid being found out for doing something forbidden? Try to visit her more often than the designated holiday periods? Tie in magic (like illusion to mask your activities, teleportation to avoid people noticing your comings and goings). Perhaps a sympathetic character could help with getting around wards that would detect magic use? I'd like something that brings more of the emotional conflict between the outside world and the magic school.

I'd love to learn more about Minnie. Over my many iterations with Horse Hall I became wildly infatuated with her, not being able to get Kyo off her back really bummed me out. Sad Talk about a toxic boyfriend.

If the character is born to a magical family, I hope that means we'll get to meet his parents, or maybe even siblings. At least, I would like to know something about them. Growing up in a magical family is bound to be cool, and the community is so small that everyone knows everyone. How awesome would it be if the PC's parents have this big reputation he's expected to live up to?

The only thing I feel weird about is the classes, spells and dungeons. Will they be the same as in Horse Hall? It's the same students in the same year, they all sit in class together and surely the boys don't get different exams than the girls. Unless the PC is a gifted student who gets bumped to sophomore classes after the fall term.

Considering this is an AU where Horse Hall PC doesn't exist, it's probably also an AU where they designed different freshmen year dungeons. I wouldn't have a problem with the spells being the same, since a lot of them see very little use in Horse Hall.

Maykacha

Looking forward to it. Though I would vote for a spin off

#153 by Maykacha - Jan 1 2013

I am sure I will enjoy it as I did the first. Though I am never crazy about playing male roles. Just seems odd somehow:). What would be interesting though is a continuation of sorts of the first .. It would be tough to do all of them but I think most really enjoyed the one with Grabiner. It might be interesting to do one with just female continuation you can name her as you play it as the first. Making different choices to progress relationship, stay in school during it.. move to England on another track , or take things slowly as friends and see what happens... Keep her friends the two room mates involved. I just loved the way it all worked and hope perhaps in the future you might consider sort of a spin off of the first.

(This isn't aimed at you specifically so please don't feel bad, but:)

While I know there are many people who would like to see a continuation of their Horse Hall characters, it is not possible at this point in time, and every time people ask about it, it makes me feel more and more like giving up on the setting entirely. Smile It doesn't help that Wolf Hall has been perpetually delayed due to artist problems and I'm now going to have to start over from scratch in order to make it at all...

Like I said, this isn't aimed at you, I just keep seeing these posts over and over on this forum and others, or sometimes people yelling at me and claiming that I "obviously" intended to write all four years and am somehow cheating them by having released the game that I wrote... sigh.

Anyway, I'm just posting this here in the hopes of discouraging anyone else from following up with a "yeah that would be great". Please don't. Smile

So yeah, the actual news update here - my resolution for 2013 is to throw out what little existed, find a new artist, and try to get this game started. Sad, because I really did want to be able to have all the characters mingling on the yearbook together, which would look better if they were all in the same style, and I do have a tiny bit of art for Wolf Hall done, but I think it's clear that if I keep waiting it's just never going to happen.

That's sad, but probably for the best. For the record, what I love best about Magical Diary is the worldbuilding and intrigue, so if I get to unlock all the niggling secrets and conspiracies, I don't really mind if I'm doing it as a Wolf Hall boy.

Plus, the idea of having all six halls is very exciting! I think being a Snake girl would be interesting, although a little quick math tells me it would be optimistic to mark this on my calendar... for 2017 or thereabouts. Anyway, I am looking forward to seeing how the second game differs from the first. But patiently.

I'm so sorry the artist issues have continued, but I'm so happy that this is moving forward. Magical Diary is such a joy to play.

I guess making a game that people really enjoy is a gift and a curse - please don't be discouraged by the crazy levels of love! Coz you know when Wolf Hall comes out people will be wanting a game where their Horse girl can date their Wolf boy! Or is that just me... Laughing Honestly, as much as I love my Horse girls, I'd much rather have a play as all the Halls than following one through to second year.

You can always request the new artist to do something like that for you at the end of the game. Just a little prize for us to unlock, or something. That way we have something to look forward to, and the artist can always have the right to disagree and such as well. (In the end, he/she is going to have to draw them all anyway, right? Razz)

Good luck finding a new artist!

Nothing exists for Wolf Hall except some vague concept notes and some art which has to be thrown out. It has not been in active production, ever.

I kept waiting for the artist to finish stuff while I did other things in the meantime, you see... (Because it's easier to write the scenarios when I have the sprites so I can plan out expressions and reactions.)

If you're your own artist, you can add things on the fly as they're needed. I have to do a lot of guesswork about what I'm going to need before I actually need it. I generally can't go back and get something else added that I've suddenly realised would be useful, although some things I can fake if I have enough base components to work with.

The expression chosen affects the way people will read the lines, so if I don't have anything that can express a particular emotion for a character, that affects what I'll write.

Beyond that, it's also helpful to be able to play through what I've just written and see how it flows and whether the visual aspects of the scene suggest any needed modifications. It kills momentum for me if I have to wait months after writing it to see what it looks like!

I'm sure other people work differently though.

Oki

#165 by Oki - Jan 18 2013

Absolutely! Trust me, I completely understand your methods. I've gone back and rewritten lines because I liked sprites so much.

I've never thought of it like that! I really enjoy learning how you work. As you've noticed I tend to ask a lot of questions about the creative process for other folks.

Here's hoping for a 2013 development process!

Sorry to rub on a sensitive point (but this won't be a "do a second year" kind of post!) but I was a tiny bit curious about the reason on why it will be difficult to see a continuation of the Magical diary story... is it a technical problem (it is complicated to create a story that considers all the many endings and choices made for year 1, not to mention the coding difficulties for that)? or a creative one? or is it connected to the artist issues you were describing?

I hope you will manage to overcome the frustrations and continue doing games, with your own time pace, and enjoying it! Smile
cheers

hanako:

Smile

Some of the storylines obviously cannot continue into the same game genre at all (like, say, the 'walking in darkness' ending). And what about characters who ended the year in Snake Hall? A second year written in the same style as this game would mean having to write an entirely separate game JUST for those characters. That's not practical.

The underlying design wasn't planned for multiple years and a lot of the handwaving that uses "you're freshmen, you'll get this later" would expire. There's a huge amount of overhead that would go into trying to meaningfully create later years and fill in the structure. The whole playstyle would have to change. Take magical history, for example. I've made it clear in the backstory that your students would be taught that in second year. But how is that going to work from a stat-raising sim perspective? A stat in Magical History is not exactly going to be directly relevant to dungeon tests in the style of the first game... And so on.

The main characters themselves don't have story arcs currently existing for the scope of later years... would probably be necessary to bring in more external events to react to instead of so much focus on people's backstories which have already been resolved. And then there's all the side characters who appear in Horse Hall giving small hints about what their intended plotlines in their own games are meant to be... but as those other games haven't been written, carrying that sort of interaction on into later years and trying to keep continuity with stories that haven't been fully written yet gets difficult.

So, summing up - huge changes necessary to the entire underlying concept in order to produce a sequel which by necessity would be far more expensive to make AND appeal to a much smaller userbase than the first game, since without having written the other freshman halls yet it would only be possible to import horse characters.

It's not practical to consider a later-years story until we close the book on other freshman halls, and it would be dumb to do that without at least having written one male hall.

And let me bring up another aspect as someone who codes.

Do you know how hard it would be from a practical standpoint to code a game that would refer to every action that differs? Just, let me give you an example.

First part of the game, introduction, I'm sure you want to know what your character was doing all summer. So already Hanako has to code in a sequence and have python recognize,

Did you stay at school due to test failures?
Did you go to the dance with Donald as a friend (don't forget, the flavor text would be different if you were in a relationship with him)
Did you reunite with Damien and keep a secret relationship with him?
Did you reunite with Damien only to avoid him because you made the promise prematurely?
Who did you date? Who did you end up with? How were your grades? Were you treasurer? Did you help Minnie out with Kyo? The games code would START out with a complicated code that's difficult on it's own solely to introduce a character beginning. Afterall, the appeal of a second game is a continuation.

Worse yet. . . A lot of people mostly just want to see romances continue. I mean, I'd love to have Hanako just say "Yes in some other worldly dimension there is a way Damien will be obsessed with you for all eternity and your crazed love will keep burning into the night just like Oki's stalking of me. . . " but isn't half the fun making it up yourself? So little return, so so so so so much work. I'm sobbing thinking of the python codes right now.

Oh God, all of the python codes. . . all the python codes. . .
I've been here so long even Hanako is sick of me

hanako

I don't personally mind the code part as much as the content - I mean, look at LLTQ, I am clearly addicted to insane overly-complicated conditionals.

... of course, LLTQ still isn't 100% bug-free in carrying out all those conditionals either, as the recent discussion about certain epilogues revealed. Which may suggest that my poor code partners and testers may not be able to handle all those conditions!

Oki

#173 by Oki - Feb 21 2013

Well, the problem with testing them in LLTQ is that once you find a way to succeed I find it's easy to get trapped in the same storyline in order to survive. In a VN, you have more options available to you with less stat boosting - so testing is easier, if ya know what I'm sayin'.

witchboy

#174 by witchboy - Feb 22 2013

Talk of a sequel has reminded me I still need to play the first game.
I am pretty psyched about their being a male/male romance available for the lead character, a first for Hanako games unless I'm mistaken.
Gay male romances are still rare in Virtual novels in America, so I'm pretty psyched to know another one is in the works down the road. Having probably two male romance options is even better Smile

kurobizzle

#175 by kurobizzle - Mar 6 2013

When talking about a sequel to Horse Hall, would it be possible to just have a spin-off sequel game based solely on the romances that have the potential to have more added to them? I'm mainly talking about Damien and Grabiner of course but instead of making it a stat-raising sim game just a visual novel where you pick options?

I guess this is just my need for more on Grabiner romance. I mean c'mon, it just started by the end of the game if you took his route!!

Bombermans

#176 by Bombermans - Apr 8 2013

It could be a nice addition to the Magical Diary series, and there's public here that would buy that spinoff (myself as well). That also would permit hanako to release SOMETHING about Magical Diary, since she can't make the sequel because of the artist problem. Sad

I would buy the pseudosequel spin-off! I could be as a visual novel, just like kurobizzle said, but with some options of magic too (and dungeons!). That way it wouldn't mess with the continuity of the normal games (because it's a spin-off) and we would get not only more magical diary, but the sequel we all wanted!

Although we still have the artist problem. XD... I'm pretty sure we all loved that style and would be difficult to adapt to another one O.o (and having the pseudosequel with no new art wouldn't be so cool...)

hanako

#177 by hanako - Apr 8 2013

For the moment, romance-only followups are really better served by fanfic/fangames.

I am talking to artists and trying to get new sets of sprites created so that we can get rolling with Wolf Hall and other adventures. There actually are some preliminary sketch designs sitting around now - nothing I can show off yet, but there is at least a tiny bit of progress happening behind the scenes. So do not despair.

As for new spells, I don't know. I certainly wasn't planning to put a whole bunch of new ones in because there are already plenty that haven't really had a chance to shine. On the other hand I wouldn't be surprised if a couple trickled in during development as we come up with puzzles.

Mystic Cake

#194 by Mystic Cake - Apr 26 2013

Wait... so Damien's going to be in the sequel too?

Well, that's something to look forward to... or be afraid of, either or, it's just as well. Wish I could be teased with MOAR characters though... like the Phifer twins, they were always fun... but I am nothing if not patient, so I'll wait for progress to be made before expecting more.

Also, for those that don't know, those would be- from left to right- with a 95% confidence level:

Ellen Middleton, Minnie Cochran (the student council president who also helped you with studying on Saturdays starting about midway through the year), and Damien Ramsey. Don't ask me how I remember everyone's last names.

Gabihime

#195 by Gabihime - Apr 26 2013

Wolf Hall is concurrent with Horse Hall, or rather replaces it, I believe, unless some vague third roommate of Ellen and Virginia's is going to be alluded to in Wolf Hall. I think all the games are meant to happen in the same year.

Anyway, the new art is cute, always happy to see some progress. As always, I tend to like what I liked at first, so I really prefer the Horse Hall uniforms, but that's probably just because I like to see boys wearing dresses.

I do hope Ellen's hair gets a little more personality, though. I know she complains she's a "rock with hair" but I do love the messy fly-away style from Horse Hall. She doesn't have to have a bed head, just more life.

But then, I'm a girl who draws hair as if it emotes by itself.

Minnie is as cute as a button, though. I have a critical weakness for Mins.

It wouldn't actually work that way - the amount of time it would take to explain everything needed to someone else and edit the results would actually make progress far slower, because I could be using that same time to write it myself.

Also, writing is the one thing I always do myself.

Love the Art

#209 by marunero - Apr 29 2013

I like it better than the original game, actually. I deferred from getting Horse Hall for a while because I thought it was going to be meant for a younger audience judging from the art style - and boy, was I wrong. I'm really happy that the character sprites seem to have more individuality than the previous game. For the record, my character in Horse Hall consistently looked like Logan with boobs...

I have a few questions/suggestions, though:
1. No one seemed to ask about the dugeon/exam. Shame, that happens to be one of my favorite parts of MD. Since it is the same year as the last game, are the exams themselves going to be the same? That would also mean that there's going to be a Thunder Dance, Maple Day, and all those other events of the last game, right?
2. In the last game, playing a pacifist blue-magic-loving goody two-shoes seemed to be the best solution to get through the tests. I seriously tortured my senior in three consecutive tries before I figured out I could just talk to him. I would like to see there be a better balance between the different disciplines/colors of magic. I hardly used green or white magic at all in the first game. I wish there can be more ways to solve a dungeon using these colors.
3. This might be hard because of the factor of the customizable MC, but I would like to see more CGs that vary for each character the player pursues - or maybe just CGs that don't include the player character in the frame, that would be so much simpler.
4. Other than that I don't have much else to say. I'm interested in dating the Eagle Hall guys besides Damien, but I don't think that's going to come into fruition until the next game - even if there is one, that's going to be at least a few years from now. If possible, I would like to meet new characters as well. Also, I'd love to be Donald and Luke's roommate instead of whoever they're dorming with in Horse Hall! Smile

hanako

#210 by hanako - Apr 30 2013

There are green solutions to (all, I think) the exams in the first game. (White, admittedly, was a little underpowered. There were exams you could solve with it, but mostly it was too expensive.) Honestly, I see a lot of feedback from people saying that X color was way overpowered and the only thing they ever needed to use... for totally different values of X. Many people never used Green. Many people used it all the time.

It was intended that you could get through most dungeons with every color and a huge range of options. After all, people feel pretty frustrated if they arrive at a dungeon and have no possible way to solve it. However, this also meant that many people never felt the need to look for alternate solutions once they'd found one that worked.

I'm still trying to figure out ways to properly encourage people into making different choices without doing the stupid thing of "you can only date this person if you grind this stat" because I hate that.

The major plot events like the festivals will be roughly the same, although different things may happen. The exams will not be all the same, although some might be similar. Too early to say!

We will be seeing some characters we haven't seen before (at least one of whom already has a sprite, but I'm trying to spread out the reveals)

Oki

#211 by Oki - Apr 30 2013

Lol, I love that response. Fanfiction. Why would I write or draw for stuff anymore, I did a ton of stuff with no results. Curse my love of under appreciated characters. It's no fun to do a bunch of work if not a single person seems to like what you do. I'll just roll around and wait until Horse Hall, lol.

DAT GRABBY. Foine. I exponentially prefer this art styles. There were just some grammatical issues in the other I couldn't shake and it really bothered me. Like really. Psyched. AT LEAST I CAN HAVE DRAGON AGE 3 THIS YEAR I'LL USE IT TO DISTRACT ME Y/Y

hanako

#212 by hanako - Apr 30 2013

I don't think it's under-appreciated characters so much as a rather small group of people actually looking at ANY works, and only an even-smaller subset of those are likely to comment. Smile

(I, for one, can't really comment much on fic for obvious reasons!)

Gabihime

#213 by Gabihime - Apr 30 2013

I know you read everything and snicker about it in private though.

I know this because: This is exactly what I would do.

I try not to actually sweat who's reading or not reading. I mean, primarily I write P&P for my own amusement. A lot more people read each chapter than actually review, although there are some very sweet and dedicated reviewers who are naturally appreciated.

The fandom is just really small. But to put it into perspective, I think I have more active readers in Magical Diary than I do in Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side, and I ever-so-humbly own Himuro Reiichi fanfiction. All in all, the fan presence in Magical Diary is really good considering how small I imagine the player base is.

Edit: On a gameplay note, I always max White when I play. I think you can do pretty much anything with White, Blue, and a little Green, so I don't consider any of those under powered at all.

My first playthrough I was really convinced there was some sort of ghost event that I could access with a high enough White score, so I got in the habit of maxing it. But that just ended up being Ellen crying herself to sleep. Poor Ellen, I thought you were Moaning Myrtle. FYI: Hana-chu, consider adding a ghost character to Wolf Hall, since everything is still in such early planning. Even if you don't want to make it conditional on learning white magic (I know you don't like that) I still think it could be awesomely enjoyable.

I hope the boy character you reveal next is Manuel. He is adorable.

Oki

#214 by Oki - Apr 30 2013

My Grabiner fic is oddly well liked, it's the others that aren't. But it's mostly the art I mean- I've been doing this since I was 4 years old (I am 21) and no one ever seems to like what I do. Doesn't matter the fandom. I've drawn for everything from Bleach to Magical Diary to well everything. It's a complex I have developed, sadly. When the DEVs of Dragon Age actually commented on the piece I spent 10 hours on, I pretty much shat myself and continued living. I guess life is really all about failure and self love, I'm really just a depressed person who's too hard on themselves. /radarada DONT DEPEND ON THE APPROVAL OF OTHERS radarada

Oh god if it were me I'd just be in my head all the time,

"Shut up and do it! Wait, I'm the writer of this. Huh."

The art is coming out very nicely!

I'm really looking forward to seeing more on the romancibles (as I think everyone is). I'm already totally sold on Magical Diary-- it's the game I replay when I need something comfortable and fun. As far as the magic types go, I did experiment with the types I used with each test, but once I figured out what worked best I stuck with that. I play it more for the story anyway.

I was so psyched to hear there might be new characters to play with! Might there be a new romancible? I'll try not to get too excited, but hey... I'm excited already, haha.

Yes but he doesn't seduce Elodie, so he's down a notch, you know? HANAKO, FIX THIS, ULTIMATE EVIL MASSACRE ENDING YES
No, but he DID seduce a queen, just not... a 15-year old one. :3

Also,

Seconded.
No no no, what I mean is he didn't seduce the main character!

Who, happens to be a 15 year old girl.

Cough.

I'm SO LOVING the new art style!
Even if I won't be able to romance Grabby or to play as a girl, I'm so waiting for this game

biscuit

#244 by biscuit - May 20 2013

...wow. Pastel's picture just knocked it out of the park. I liked everyone else in the new style too, but she looks REALLY, really good. Very true to character, and definitely more personality and individualization than the first game's art style (what with using hair, face structure, etc) allowed.

Dames is on page 13 so go look at him all you want XD.

I imagine she's going to save the emosets and all until Wolf Hall actually enters beta, because she's got to keep something back.

I have really liked all the new character designs other than Ellen, so give my props to the illustrator Smile (and maybe you told her to do that on purpose, given the arc of Ellen's development). But I do like the Horse Hall style of uniforms better still.

Is Wolf Hall still going to have a character gen for the protagonist, or are you going to have a static hero this time? I love the options character gen gives, but then it becomes very problematic to do even cutesy chibi CGs (like the death CGs from LLtQ). I would love to see job ending chibi CGs, (any maybe 'most likely' ones too) because it'd give you something else to try to unlock.

I guess what you'd need is a second character gen to gen chibi CGs based on the options chosen at beginning character gen. Blurg. So many art resources required. What a pain XD

hanako

#248 by hanako - May 28 2013

Yes, you will still be able to design your own character.

I have a few more to post but that'll probably wait until tomorrow... and will violate the proposed ban on a butterfly and a falcon at the same time Smile

BIG STEEEEEEVE.

He looks wonderfully -- well, like a high school senior who talks to stuffed rabbits.

Is Angela a love interest this time? It would be exciting trying to melt her cold, cold (brutal) heart.

Also, Jacob looks like a criminal. Do you see that face? It is the face of a criminal.

I love Big Steve's pic. I hope we get to see more of him. ^^

I like Angela's pic better in this one. If she is a romanceable character, I hope she'll end up likeable in the end. I never did end up liking her in Horse Hall. She had too much of that snobby attitude.

It's a shame the game is nowhere near the finish yet, i guess i'll go dive into fanfics xD

After having seen the 'picture book' scene, Suki is now one of my ultimately favorite characters.

With those glasses, she looks like a masked avenger: Suki Sato is just a normal school girl, but when she puts on her magic specs, she becomes SUPERSUKI, champion of falsely imprisoned hodags everywhere and devoted to making friends with everyone!

(IE One of those characters who appears in a really poor superhero disguise, that absolutely everyone sees through except the really gullible.)

I also like Raven's steepled fingers. All I can think of when I see her is "Shall we give our lives for the stage?"

And Manuel is adorable. I heart him.

FantasyFan

#270 by FantasyFan - Jun 24 2013

Oooh, Suki in a superhero mask, that should be awesome!

I really hope we learn more about Raven and Suki in this game. Suki always reminds me of Luna Lovegood (especially when she names the monster in the dungeon).

I also REALLY hope the series makes it to the Snake Hall game - I'd love to play a Snake.

Loving the new set. Manuel does look adorable and I'm curious to learn more about Suki. I liked her in Wolf Hall and yup, she is sort of like Luna Lovegood. Very Happy Raven looks like she's up to something or maybe she's having a bad day? lol

It'd be really great to see a Snake Hall version for this game. Actually, I'd love to see versions for all the different halls eventually. ^^

Only one more character set left to post... that isn't necessarily all the characters in the game, but it's the last ones I'm actually going to show.

For that matter, there's no guarantee you'll actually see all of these people anywhere either. There's a lot of characters running around this school, after all!

Gabihime

It's Corrina who was may queen, Taranis who seems to be a sassy brat, and Lena, who went to Medea with Ellen, yo.

At least one of those guesses is incorrect. Smile

Gabihime

#277 by Gabihime - Jun 27 2013

Then it's not Lena XD. She was the first unknown butterfly I could think of, because that's definitely Corrina and Mr. Kill Them All~

Unless you changed his name again X3

Whoever she is, she's really cute! I love her freckles.

Edit: Oh, now I know who she is X3 But I won't say, so other people can guess!

Guh I'm just so used to Donald looking like a little kid >< it's hard picturing him as a -man-

Gabihime

#281 by Gabihime - Jul 3 2013

Well, sixteen is pretty grown up Smile For boys it's definitely still growing up, but most boys, unless they're very baby faced leave the strong 'little kid' behind around twelve.

I know anime art can be really stylized in both directions though, which is why you can have fourteen year olds that look like Utena and a twenty-one-year-old that looks like Keiichi.

The new art is very consistent though. I think that generally everybody looks to be about the right age :3

But it is very different than the Horse Hall art, that's true. I think Donald may be one of the characters for whom this is most striking, because of his personality, and the fact that he's not super tall in HH (he's a freshman and not a senior like Damien), it's easy to imagine he's actually younger than he's meant to be.

FantasyFan

But why bother to make a sequel if you're just going to end up doing the same character routes as the first? We've already got romances for Virginia and Ellen, and also Big Steve to a lesser extent, so why do it again? Isn't the point of a sequel to expand upon the first, not just do the exact same thing again but with a male main character?

I'm not saying that including Virginia and Ellen would be a BAD thing, but I just feel that romance with them in Wolf Hall would... really bring nothing new, pretty much a retread of the romances in Horse Hall...

On the other hand, I'm all for the rest of them... except Kyo, because based on how his relationship with Minnie went in Horse Hall... ehhhhh, I'd rather not try anything with that minefield of a man. And personally I preferred Luke over Logan, but that's just me Smile

Also, I'd include William and Angela. Because William is William and William is wonderful (and we know he doesn't like girls after Angela poisoned him off of them, sooooo maybe?), and Angela because, much like Damien, I'm up for the challenge! Very Happy

Not that it really matters what I say at this point, I'm sure Hanako's got it all figured out XD

Wakuseino

#285 by Wakuseino - Jul 9 2013

Well, I have objections to the idea that Ellen's is going to be the same, at least -- a big aspect of the relationship was the connection of being "the two Wildseeds", and that colored a lot of stuff about the relationship. Wolf Hall protagonist being someone who's born into a magic family means that the entire dynamic will be a very different thing, and it's something I at least would be interested in seeing.

I know what you mean though. There are a lot of characters, so there's no need to include Ellen as romancable again any time soon, especially since we... don't quite have the context we need to see things from the other side quite yet, though Wolf Hall may give us just that.

Honestly, I wouldn't even consider Kyo. He was so emotionally (and possibly physically) abusive that it sounds like a bad idea. I had a hard enough time watching Minnie date the guy, seeing my own character deal with him would be awful.

On the flip side, however, Big Steve as a BxB option at some point would totally make my day! He's seriously one of my favorite characters ever, and seeing his new character sprite makes me like him even more!

OMG SO MUCH SPRITES. I shall comment them all!!

I really do like the new art style, although some of the characters I do think they have lost some of their charisma. Specially Ellen, who is not cute anymore but normal, Grabinier, who now looks like a sporty man and does not look like a slim studious magician anymore, and Postdam, who now does not look anymore like a sexy-old-woman-who-rejuvenates-herself-and-is-scary-because-she-is-sexy-but-could-have-the-age-of-your-grandma. (Now she looks like a normal old woman who dyes her hair XD)
  • I LOVE the new look of Minney! She's now sooooo cute! <3
The new Damien looks funny, because HIS FACE. He looks totally like the naughty demon he is, hahaha! Very Happy
  • The new Grabinier looks really awful to me Sad He doesn't look like Snape anymore (which, we all have to admit, is the reason we love him so much e.e). He looks less than a magician and more like a strong big man, who raises bulky wood boxes with his hands rather than his magic. In my opinion, he lost all of his charisma with the change, he's not a slim teacher anymore, now he is a Rambo.
  • The same thing happens with Postdam: she does not look anymore like the 'sexy, yet old' teacher that every school has, where students make dirty jokes about her. She now just looks like an old normal woman who teaches his students. She doesn't even look that she preserves her youth with magic! Now it only looks like she dyes her hair. o.O
  • William did have a major change too, but I think it suits him well, since he is older than the main PC. AND KYO'S FACE! HAHAHA! Suits him well!
I like the girl with the key earring! Don't have a clue on who she is, though. O.O (Yeah, I read her name, but don't remember having met someone like her in Horse Hall! XD [maybe that girl that Damien mentioned in his route?]
  • I REALLY, REALLY LOVE THAT NEW PASTEL!! <3 Also, Luke and Logan's capes are so cool... Where did they buy them?! I want three!
  • BIG STEVE LOL. His face! Hahaha! Laughing I agree with the smooth criminal look of Jacob. {The picture with the hat XDDDDDD}. Angela looks really great! I also wish that if Angela is romanceable, she'll end up likeable! XD She was a funny and interesting character the last game, although we hear little from her.
  • Donald looks to me a bit older/taller than he should, since he was always seen to be so inmature, young and full of life. Though in the new style he conserves a bit of his spirit, we can see it just by looking at his happy face! XDD Loving his grin face! The only thing I don't like about this Virginia is her face expression... she needs a grin like his brother! XD
  • Raven looks really nice and unique! Can't wait to see if we can learn more about her [striked]evil schemes[/striked]! Suki's glasses are LOL. We should be able to buy some for ourselves XD And [striked]Tails[/striked] Manuel is so adorable!
  • I also like the three last sprites, though I have no idea of who they may be. I specially love the third one! Her freckles make her sooooo cute!
  • In conclusion: I love the new art. But I definitely think that Grabinier, Postdam and Ellen have lost all of her charisma, and that their designs are not true to the first game nor the spirit of the characters.

I really like all the new sprites ^_^
It's kind of less, 'cartoony' than the last one but still similar.
I thought I might put my 5 cents on how the characters look, I couldn't resist commenting!

Ellen - Ellen looks more normal than cute in her sprite, but she still looks nice!
Minny - ^^ She looks adorable! I can se why Kyo was
Damien - Damien looks great! I'm glad he's going to be romanceable in Wolf Hall :)
Grabby - Hit and miss with him, he doesn't resemble Snape much at all, and I would rather him being on the slim side than buff.
Potsdam - I actually really like her, she seems more middle aged than grandma aged in the sprite, and I would rather her looking like this than what she originally did if she were a romanceable character.
Kyo - Love his facial expression, and I'm glad he looks a lot less girly in this art form.
Barbara - Barbara looks nice, and those key earings hint at the eccentricness that got her put in Snake hall
William - William, like Kyo looks a lot less girly here and more older brotherish which is really nice.
Pastel - Pastel, as always, is lovely as ever and still holds my heart out of the girls :P
Luke - Luke looks adorable and mischevious, perfect for Wolf Hall!
Logan - Could luke and Logan please be romanceable? Mayhaps together? *Grins*
Jacob - Jacob looks like the kind of person that usually ends up in trouble, only to talk his way out of it :)
Angela - Angel looks like a Tsundere, I really hope that if she's romanceable that she turns out likeable!
Big Steve - Yay! Big Steve! *Dances*
Donald - Adorable, maybe a little bit on the tall side, but adorable.
Balthazar - Poor Balthazar, if only we knew what you looked like under that mysterious hood...
Virginia - Pretty much perfect, She just looks.... Small? Compared to the other sprites/characters.
Raven - What are you planning..... Hmmmm? She looks cute, in an evil, I wonder what she's planning way.
Manuel - Manuel! *Glomps* PLEASE! PLEASE! Make Manuel romanceable, he looks so cute! And his ears and tail are adorable, but I wonder if they're real...
Suki - Those glasses make her look like a superheroe, or a supervillian...
Corrina? - She looks pretty, are we going to get to see more of here in this game?
Taranis? - Mmmm, hot. If he was part of Wolf Hall I would of asked if he could be one of Pc's dorm mates. But since he's a toady...
Unknown - I like her hair, and her eyes + freckles.

I really like the new art, and definitely looking forward to Wolf Hall. I really hope we get Manuel as a romanceable option though :) If not, can he be romanceable if you make another game?

Backing this one up. I don't normally go for hetero romances, but the moment I saw Manuel in the first game I was looking everywhere for a chance to interact with him, and all I got was the scene where he shows up at the doorstep selling snacks. He was very... puppy-like. Having a shot with him in Wolf Hall could probably make the graduation dance the most adorable thing ever, though I say that without having gone through much of the Big Steve content.

Donald's a pretty cool guy. It should be interesting to see what shenanigans he'll be up to without Horse Protagonist being there to encourage him to join the theatre. Then again, his two siblings are pretty cool too. I'm actually a bit curious to see how Angela got William to swear off girls, but Damien couldn't get him to swear off guys.

I suspect that that has more to do with the fact that Virginia doesn't think William's feelings about dating guys have anything to do with Ellen's chances with him than with Angela actually being that much worse than Damien.

A romance with Kyo, and Jacob, and mysterious blonde guy in the last post...

Let's be honest, if you make a romance, I'll play it through. Although I didn't like Virginia's romance very much in HH, even though I love her character. It seemed comparatively boring, I guess. That's just me, though. I like romances that put the characters in extreme situations, so we can see what their mental process is like while they're going through these things, and we can see what choices we would make in these crazy situations. Maybe that explains why I think Kyo would be fun to play. I want to know what it would be like if my protagonist gave into his crazy and stood up to it, and how he'd react.

(My other favorite romance was Grabiner, because GRABBBYYYYYYY. But also because, again, there were really Fantastic circumstances, and they were something I hadn't seen before in an otome and I felt like it took some real maneuvering and character/personality-guessing to woo him.)

    Play all the romances!

If I had to pick 5 besides the ones in Horse Hall, I would totally go for Pastel, Raven, Minnie, Luke/Logan and William. Additionals (like Big Steve) could be Manuel and/or Suki.

I also hope we get to learn more about Musette and about mixing Science with Magic!

((Sorry to jump in here as my first post, I've been a long time lurker..))

Wow, I love the new sprites! I really like how now everyone's got way more character! Even the ones who still look very similar are just so more identifiable and real because they're not just drawn over the same base. The old art style was great and it was nice to see so much variety made from the character generator but now everyone's got thier own unique facial expressions, different heights and weights and poses, so on. It's just so much more endearing!

A slight bit of squee is approaching!!

New Big Steve = the best anything ever. He was already pure adorb and now he's even more amazing! The bigger floofier afro suits him much better and DAT FACE xD If he's not a yaoi romance option then I'll cry!
New Luke and Logan are even better because... they actually look more similar? XD I mean, before, everyone had the same body base, roughly speaking. So the few differences stood out way more. Now it's the opposite, physically they look identical (while noone else does) but thier bases are different. They're like the same guy with personality differences!
New loopy peoples = yay, does this mean that the snakes and toads are gonna get more of a feature in this game? Suki and Balthasar were my fave tiny NPC roles cos they're just so funny! And now Suki looks like an anime mecha superhero o.O "THIS IS THE WAND THAT WILL PIERCE THE HEAVENS!"
New William is HUGE. Someone's been eating thier greens! I hope he's romanceable, he's even more of the smexy dude now!
New Kyo looks more like a creeper but I kinda miss him having really huge chibi-esque eyes. It was sort of his thing... he felt more unhinged as a baby-faced dude who seems innocent but can then snap into a crazy misogynist rant about how he hates Minnie and loves her at the same time...
New Grabiner... I like the design but it looks nothing like him. It just weirds me out.. he looks like a totally new character cosplaying as Grabby! I know everyone looked pretty thin and bishie in the first game but you got the sense that Grabby was a spindly intellectual type character, and now he's the buffest cast member o.O It doesn't fit his personality to be so buff. I'm just imagining him like... playing instruments VERY ANGRILY with his power muscle hands, and then throwing students across the room if they back-sass him XD It just seems like a shame, lots of fans loved Grabby when he wasn't stereotypically attractive so I'm not sure why he needed this change.
New Potsdam... her eyes bug me for some reason. I don't know why.. I just guess because they look a bit more realistic than everyone else's? But aside from that she's awesomely chubby cute and it's nice to see her looking her age instead of having a teenlike body. She looks more warm and welcoming like she's gonna hug all the students TO DEATH~
New Ellen... I need to romance her! *full-on sparkling anime eyes* She doesn't have as much of her epic nerd sass in that expression but then again her default expression was pretty plain in the original too. But I'm so happy my fave character is even more awesome-looking!!

Overall, everything looks like it's gonna be way better than Horse Hall and I'm so excited I think I'm gonna explode!! Good job, Hanako!

Have smth to say about the new art of characters...

In my opinion, the most of boys look better in new shape, but the girls....

For god's sake, what have you done to Angela?? In original game, i really liked her - that boyish short hair, sharp face profile - i can easily imagine her german accent. It was very bright shape. And now....an ordinary "secondary" girl, no personal differences from other in looks, ordinary hairdo and absolytely dull face.
And most of other girl walk the same path in the sequel.
    Raven, Suki...QQ.
Only Victoria haven't change at all.

I find that really funny given that Angela is completely made of character available stuff. You can easily replicate her appearance and she isn't unique.

But I'll agree now she seems like a generic villain type female. I think she'd look better with less make up and more of a curl down short style, pretty naturally and very haughty about it. Covering her in makeup almost seems detrimental to the image she has.

I'm really excited to see more body shape diversity, particularly the curvy Ellen. I'm hoping the player-character has a husky body option, too. (I suppose you could even do the endomorph, mesomorph, ectomorph types?) Varied representation for the win!

Progress? Not on this game, no... don't expect this to even get started until Black Closet is in beta. Sorry. Smile Right now I'm trying to push BC forward while getting Science Girls ready for a Steam launch.

The only positive thing I can say is that I'm refusing to get into any other new projects until Wolf Hall is dealt with.

Here's my wishlist as perhaps one of those rare rabid male fans. Of course, since the wishlist vastly exceeds the amount of content anyone could reasonably expect, so I won't feel bad if/when most of it gets disregarded.

    Girls:
Minnie (confirmed) - I basically thought Minnie was a saint after she became the only student to write in my yearbook after I became universally reviled at school (during the Damien path). I'm excited about this path, especially because I think it will be way more than a generic "WHITE KNIGHT RESCUE THE DAMSEL IN DISTRESS" plot.

Professor Potsdam - Yeah, this probably disturbs a few people, but is she really that much older than Grabiner? And Grabiner was great. Plus, there was that amusing conversation with Donald/Luke while making candles.

Pastel - From the start, Pastel seemed like one of those totally unapproachable characters and her uh, interesting way of interacting people seemed to consign her to permanent side-character status. I feel that kind of character archetype is rarely explored in games, so I'd be interested to see more.

Angela - Angela was perfectly depicted as the glorious alpha bitch of the school. Would be interesting to uh...delve in that character. Can some dorky freshman rando succeed where sparkly William AND Damien both failed? Even if the path was guaranteed to end in horrible tears, I'd still want to play it.

Ellen - Since the protagonist isn't a wildseed, it would be interesting to see how the interaction would differ. Especially if the protagonist was a snooty, tooty, screw science wizard.

    Boys:
William - I was crushed that there was no William option in the original, but considering the nature of his history with Damien, that might not have been plausible. Heh. So yeah, here's hoping to William. We need one Danson...right?

Manuel - I think everyone is cheering for this based on very limited interactions with the character, but I'll shamelessly echo the sentiment.

Unnamed Blonde Guy in Green Magic Class - the dude who questioned about using green magic to make people suffer. This guy piqued my interest and I was disappointed I didn't get to see more of him.

Please do NOT make William a romanceable option! I love him but I feel that by doing so, his past with Damien would lose all significance. I am curious to know more about his relationship with Angela. Did he date her prior to dating Damien and was this before or after Damien dated her?

Re: Sequel Talk - Magical Diary Wolf Hall

Canon is clear that the William/Damien relationship was in their freshman year. While I don't think I ever stated in the last game when William dated Angela, or when Damien dated Angela, but you can safely assume that William/Damien was first.

It would be interesting if Damien stole Angela from William! I did enjoy the sexual tension between the two boys though I didn't realize that was what it was when I first played through it - which made it all the more amusing. I would have found it interesting if William was shown to still have feelings for Damien (because who doesn't love a twisted romance?). I would have liked to see him demonstrate what made him a Falcon when he first came to the school!

Btw, on an unrelated note, I was playing the Donald route today and in the scene where he talks about trying out for the school play, he says he only got in the chorus because he's a freshman. Isn't he supposed to be older?

His birthday is on Oct 29 and by then he is indeed one year older than Virginia but still a freshman. I guess that means he's not a full year older than Virginia (otherwise he'd be in second year). I'm not sure when Virginia's birthday is. I know my SO and I have about half a year between us and we were in the same year.

Sorry if this was aforementioned, there was like.. A billion pages and, while I would like to read them all, I spent all day playing with a two year old, and I feel I could currently cook eggs with my eyes.
(No, I wont try this. Because I have a cooking degree and I KNOW it wouldn't work. What do you mean I wont do anything with the degree? Wasted time? Shut-up other voice.)
    Right. What? Oh.
I think it would be interesting to have yourself pursuable character.
(Oh my LORD, shut up, I'm going to elaborate.)
So, I know a few games out there will read data from your previous save file from the previous game. And as such, I thought it might be cool to be able to upload a Mary Sue from your saved game. The storyline would have to assume you did.. Well.. I guess nothing? Wait what?
Damien as a pursuable character would in turn mean that Mary Sue could be pursuable right?
    (Right.)
    Right.
I guess her personality would be.. hmm.. Over all Mary Sue seems kind of timid.. So I suppose you could just make her timid, with as little information about her grades as possible.
(Kinda like she's avoiding telling you because you could either feel dumb or worry about her failing, right?)
    Right.
    So. Thoughts?

    Wouldn't work out, I'm afraid.

For one, it's the difference in which characters are present that causes the plot to shift. You'll be interacting with a lot of the same people but things won't turn out the same way, partly because Mary Sue is not there.

For another, the art style has changed and it wouldn't be possible for every design from the first game to show up now.

If and when we ever do get the game written though it'd be interesting to see fanfic on what might have happened if they were both there (but you'll have to wait and find out what Gary Stu is like first, as he may surprise you!)

Re: Sequel Talk - Magical Diary Wolf Hall

Oh okay. I'm thinking about writing a fan-fic to suggest a character for your next game. Magical Diary or not. Simply because I respect the difficulties of character personality design.
The character in question is an over protective big-brother type. And in the fan-fic, there may be some clashes with Damien!
I'll write the first blip, and post it while I finish the piece. But if you have any ideas for side character's you want to see in your games, but don't have the time to write a personality piece for them, I would be happy to assist in any way I can.
[Edit] I guess Mary Sue should be one of the main characters. Since she's the one with the least amount of weight about her storyline. This makes sense.. Sure. I'll hopefully have a sample for you guys in a bit.

Mmmm, I wonder who Damien is going to choose for iniciation then... If he chooses Virginia there might be trouble!

    p.s:
I find genius how, in the first game you are a wildseed, but in the second you are not, wich in retrospect makes sense because in your first playthough of the first game you know nothing about it's world, but when you play the second game you already have some information about it!

While excited for the game. The only thing I am dreading is Damien. Mind, you he is the type of character that just rubbed me in all the wrong ways. Perhaps have three males and three females to date. Especially as we have Damien who was in the previous game as an option. As this is a sequel, it would be best if we have as many new characters to choose from as we had from the previous game.

P.S. I really hate Damien with a passion. I know, don't like him, don't have to choose him.

Loved Magical Dairy, and I would be happy if you would make more visual novel rpgs like this one which is GxG, and I played one called Loren the Amazon Princess which was great but not made by you guys and so I like these sort of games.

I just want to encourage you to make more like these sort of rpgs visual romance games which are GxG especially! otherwise I am just not interested in buying your games, sorry.

I was let down that there were 3 guys that you could date in Magical Diary and only 2 girls. Not so much for equality, are you?

I am just saying that I would like the same amount of girls you can date as guys and this is only an encouragement like I said and I hope this will happen more often and then I will be glad to purchase more of your games.

Donald's a great guy but I don't have any other major angles to his character or storyline planned, so there's not much interesting I could do with another relationship with him, unless I broke up the Donald-and-Luke dynamic and I don't want to do that. Really, anyone yaoi-shipping Donald is better off pairing him with Luke, or maybe with Logan to create twin-tension...

I loved the first game and, as a boy, am quite looking forward to this wolf hall sequel. One thing I noticed about the romance options are that both boys are in senior year. It seems highly unlikely that the pc is the only queer boy in the hall, or even the only one he knows. It would make more sense if at least one freshman boy was a romance option, but it is a magic school, so making sense is the least of worries.

For example, these characters all existed in Horse Hall, but how much do you know about them?

Hm...mystery Butterfly who isn't Lena. She would be Susan or Laurel Aster (or Liz, but I thought she was a Horse but I don't remember if it ever actually said that). But which one?

Also, did Grabiner and Potsdam attend Iris Academy back in their days? I'm dying to know what dorms they would have been in XD Toad and Butterfly, maybe?

So I just wanted to say, I got the demo to introduce my youngest sister to other video game genres, I got hooked and bought the full game almost immediately. So as a man I throughly enjoyed playing as a teenage witch, and as a fan of this game and possibly others, I just tried Long Live the Queen, I can appreciate a MxM romance, or even a bromance if it is written well enough. So far I have no reason to believe you wouldn't otherwise. I just would like to leave this on the table:
1.) An even number of romance options for both genders would be awesome.
2.) More side characters to possibly distract me from the main cast, It was part of the reason that I kept replaying.
3.) More clubs, activities, events. I might be the only one who thought that there might be a secret bounders club hidden somewhere in the school.
4.) Older and/or younger siblings to receive letters from.
5.) More possible applications for spells outside of class, Can anyone say prank war?
6.) A possible release date, if you don't mind.
7.) Thanks for reading this and making this really awesome game and please continue to do so in the future.
8.) Manuel, Suki, Raven, Angela, or Professor Potsdam are amongst my wild speculation of who might be romanceable.
X.) Because you have said you dislike reading comments like "PLEASE MAKE A SEQUEL!" I have chosen to put my two cents in white. Ignore everything after the space if you don't wish to read it, I understand.

I think that one way to do a linear sequel would be amnesia, you forget everyone and any significant events except any of the events with permanent consequences; marriage selling, your soul, I didn't follow through with the rest of Damien's story line I honestly felt hurt by his actions..., so excellent writing on your part! But please ignore this if this will discourage you from doing a circular sequel.

I've been looking forward to this more than I want to admit.

I know that you've been busy with other things at the moment, so I'm not being impatient (I promise it's only just a tiny bit hahaha)

If the sequel will be anything like the first, then you've got nothing to worry about. Plus it'll be kind of fun to see the school from a different angle, in a different gender!

Interesting that Minnie will be a romance option!

I don't know if you'll have it set up in this game or not, but having the option at becoming the Class President would be really awesome. Seems like the class president gets to have more fun with the events then the treasurer did.

Keep doing what you're doing. I'll be excited to see the game come up when it does Smile

I don't believe Isobel's surname is ever mentioned in text, or ever will be mentioned in text as I don't currently have plans for her to show up again. Therefore the best I can say for canon is 'unknown'.

By original plans, Pena, though it might have become Peña had it been relevant, or been changed entirely. Minor character details are not really fixed because they might need tweaking if I have to use them for something.

Second off, I just wanted to add my own excitement to the pile you got going here about Wolf Hall. I am eager to see the from a new view point and being able to meet more characters will be really fun. Now that you are done with BC are you going to be shifting focus to this? Or do you have any other fun projects on the horizon?

I can't WAIT to play wolf hall I better space out playing the other three romances in anticipation Surprised! (grabby (hilarious), virginia(fun!), and then ellen (my lest favorite))

Can't wait to play the new sequel when it one day comes out and until then I definitely will be playing your other games now that i've discovered them Hanako Very Happy! <3

Is there any hope at all for a 2nd year game? I really wanna keep pursuing grabby & see if we stay married. LOL. If not have u considered making a book or anything kinda like this game? It's going to take me a while to get used to the new art style, but I am still looking forward to Wolf Hall.
I wish I could help out with the art, but I am really not good at drawing. I would offer my writing services, but I saw Hanako's post about that. I understand; you would rather have your ideas and not a compromise written by multiple writers, plus discussions. I must say, however, that it's hard being a one writer team for games that have multiple paths. I believe you can do it though, Hanako, since you already have several games out! (laughs)
As far as date-able characters go, I would like to see Manuel as an option. If it's not possible, then I'd least like to have his character and background developed. Like, is he a wolf fairy, a type of werewolf, or are those ears and tail actually real? I'm currently writing a fanfiction starring an OC Toad, and one of his roommates is Manuel. I must say, it's hard to develop an already established side character that doesn't have that much of a background.
I also see Damien as a possible romantic interest, since if you don't date him in Horse Hall, it's rumored he "takes advantage" of a freshman boy and gets expelled. I'd like to think that the freshman boy mentioned would be the MC for Wolf Hall. William would also be a good romantic candidate, I believe.
Minnie would be an interesting choice, since it would most likely mean getting involved in Kyo and Jacob's fight. I don't know what other female options would be good. Maybe one of the Snake girls?
I'll try to stay in touch with the game updates, and to anyone interested in reading the mentioned fanfic, it's in the fanfiction forum.

Re: Sequel Talk - Magical Diary Wolf Hall

Manuel is not intended as a romance for this game, I don't think he and WolfPC will click that well. I do know more about him than I've said, but like most characters, exploration of his backstory is really meant for when he's either your roommate or your romance. You can make up what you like, though, no one will be surprised when canon suddenly contradicts you in the future, it always happens Smile Almost any fanfic currently including Jacob, Minnie, or Manuel is getting them horribly wrong (to me) right now but to some degree that's a good thing as it reminds me that I need to get my version done so people can see it!

For me the main take-away from the few pages I've read of this thread is that yes, whatever the continuity, the entire Danson family really is that good-looking.

If Potsdam really wanted to conquer the world, she should just get William to smile at it and promise it hugs.

I know it's not likely and I'm not even putting this forward as a serious suggestion but I think it'd be super cool if you could load our save from Horse Hall into Wolf Hall and hear about some of the events. Haha... Like HH MC getting married to Grabiner >_> though... if WH MC became treasurer it'd completely invalidate that path, so, y'know, there's a big reason not to do that. =P

Anyway, love Horse Hall and I am super looking forward to Wolf Hall, even if I do prefer playing as a girl.

I prefer that kind of thing to be headcanon anyway. I've got Mary Sues who I like to think stayed with Grabiner forever and Mary Sues who divorced him after the year-and-a-day but tried to start up a more traditional romance after graduation. Making one canon just messes with the others.

Re: Sequel Talk - Magical Diary Wolf Hall

Sure, there's multiple ways you can go about it in the engine. You can save data at the end of the game that will be automatically picked up by a different game (I think Analogue / Hate Plus does this behind the scenes), or you can manually export data and then load it into the new one, or you could just ask at the beginning of the next game. Since the art has been changed, even if we WERE making later years you'd have to redesign your character, so adding a few 'who did you date' questions wouldn't be that much more stumbling block.

Magical Diary is beside Royal Trap my personal favorite from the games I have from Hanako so I'm glad its still worked on.
Is there any planed release date mentioned already for Wolf Hall?
My personal hope is that it not get out around the same time as the Steam release of Academagia, my all time favorite, as this will have a major UI revision and the very large DLC 17.
(But there is currently no time frame as they still have to make the video for the Greenlight)
