Bonus Art

This is something I had done when I was back in the concept stage for the game, working out what I wanted all these characters to look like. It's obviously a totally different style than we ended up with, but it's still a pretty neat version of what some of the book characters might look like.

And of course, much later, I had this little bit of Jessie and Lavinia made:

Woah! That animation is beautiful!!

And the Jessie-Lavinia art always make me laugh. Oh, Jessie, you're precious.
"It's good to be the president." - The President
"Oh humble dirt, if I could, I would carry you to freedom!" -The Lady and Saviour of all the dirt, mud and pebbles.
"Cake! Me!" -A VERY hungry Scullery Maid

On the topic on concept art- I loooooooove the overall character designs in this game. (I mean, your character designs are always on point but I really like the ones in this game.) Do you determine all the character designs for your games yourself and then hand them off to the artists to draw, or is that something you work with your artists on?

I totally would have loved a game in that first style too, it's gorgeous.

Usually I describe the character's personality, some physical traits I think they should have (occasionally with options, "this or maybe this"), and reference art ("a dress like this, a hairstyle sort of like one of these?") but how detailed I get varies by character. Then as the sketches come in, I'll redirect if it's not going the way I want it to, but overall I let artists run with it once they've got the idea since I expect them to have better visual taste than I do. Occasionally I sketch it if I can't find good reference art.

With Sara, for example, I was fairly specific about her hairstyle, but her original schoolgirl dress I don't think I said much more than "something cute" and the party dress was "something pink in lolita-style, maybe with gauze" (I definitely didn't request the little wings, but I thought it was funny that it kind of reminded me of Elodie/magicalgirl and so kept it) but the black dress I was much more specific about and made little adjustments to it to get it right.

It seems Nomnomnami had deleted the Lavinia/Jessie pic from their tumblr. Do you think you can repost the it here or somewhere? I'm curious what it looked like.
