Where can I download the manual for the game?

There is none. There's a brief tutorial, but you're supposed to learn the ropes by playing it.

And by dying brutally several times over because you don't know what to do.

Are you sure? The TV Tropes page for this game claims the game has a manual somewhere with lots of extra information in it.

The 'All There In The Manual' entry on TVtropes specifically refers to the information that comes up when you raise Elodie's skills and the little biographies you get by clicking the ? when characters are talking. Not an actual manual.
