How do you make a foreign duke your subject? I can't figure it out.

It involves making Talarist the next Duke of Elath.

Ok so to make Talarist the next Duke of Elath. I assumed you had to be engaged to him. And that you had to send Adair to his grandfather who kills him. But Adair didn't die when I did that. What am I doing wrong?

If you're already engaged to Talarist, the people who really want to promote Sedna's interests in Elath are generally satisfied and less likely to keep pushing at the border, so nobody assassinates Adair.

It's when you're not engaged to Talarist and you send Adair to his grandfather that he gets killed.
