Trouble launching game after downgrading

I can't start my game after last updates (I am getting a message: Errors occurred). Sad How can I download *Magical Diary* again?

Thanks

I can get you a fresh download, but fresh downloads will cause bugs if installed over half-uninstalled older copies, so it's usually better to work out what's gone wrong with your current install and try to fix it.

If you haven't uninstalled your current copy, DON'T.

(If you've already done so, let me know and I'll give you different instructions for how to clean out the old version correctly.)

So, okay. What was the last version you had that was working, if you know? (If you don't know the version numbers, where were you getting up to in game before it stopped?)

When did it start giving you errors? (Was it today that you were trying to update? To what version?) What errors EXACTLY did it give you, and what were you doing at the time? Did it start messing up while you were running the updater? Did you run the updater and then it tried to restart and something strange happened? Are there any logfiles or textfiles in your game directory? If so, please post them, as they might contain useful error messages.

I know this is a ton of questions, I'm just trying to sort out what piece is broken here. Smile

I don't remember exactly what was the last version ... maybe it was alfa. But I check for updates every day! Smile Today, I tried reverse to last beta version and .... can't start this game anymore.
Instead I got this logfile generated on my desktop:

I'm sorry, but an uncaught exception occurred.

Spiky Caterpillar

Ah, the leftover week19.rpyc from the last alpha (or beta?) isn't compatible with the version you downgraded to. Try deleting D:\Program Files\Magical Diary - Horse Hall\game\week19.rpyc and seeing if it will let you start the game? (Then, if that works, update to a beta to redownload week19.)

Benazir

#5 by Benazir - Mar 6 2011

Thank you, I deleted week19.rpyc. And now I can play *Magic Diary*, but I don't see new updates for my game (version - 0.2.98 ).

I think Spiky's been forgetting to push things from beta to release when he updates the latest beta. *pokes the caterpillar*

You can set it to show beta versions and catch up to the most recent one from there. Alphas are generally meant for Spiky and I to test personally and are the ones most likely to crash. The beta version is the one that we have knocked all the bugs we know about out of. When the game is completely finished, then new patches will be in beta for a while before they go to full release, but while the game is in development EVERYTHING is a beta so you may as well just download the beta versions. If that makes sense.

The current beta version should be around 0.3.28

Oke. But NOW nothing occurs when I click *Check for updates*. Then where can I download last beta version?

hanako

#8 by hanako - Mar 7 2011

Do you have 'show beta versions' set to Enabled?

Probably there's some other old leftover file from before you reverted which is confusing the game. (Looks like reverting to old versions doesn't quite work right yet. Sorry about that!) When I can get Spiky back on the phone I'll have a better answer. Smile

hanako:

Yes, of course. Smile

Sorry, just had to check. Smile

If absolutely nothing happens and it's not even listing the option to reset to the version you're already on, it might also be a net hiccup between you and the server that distributes the patches, so it's worth trying again later.

Oh, yes! Now I downloaded updates (beta version 0.3.28.1) and the game runs just fine. Thank you very much! Very Happy

Game problems

#12 by PennyFaust - Mar 16 2011

Not sure what went wrong, but I sent the rollback---or I think I did. I'm not sure if it went through D: and now the game wont even start up. I tried uninstalling then reinstalling but that hasn't worked either <8D;

Is there anything I can do or should I just download a new game version?

Sorry I don't have much more info on it <8C

#13 by hanako - Mar 16 2011

Did you at any point attempt to reset to an earlier version?

That tends to create problems because of leftover files. Uninstalling/reinstalling not only won't help, it makes it worse, because at that point there's no way of fixing the mess of files from incompatible versions without starting from scratch.

The newest version of the installer has some upgrades that will make uninstall/reinstall work a bit better, but that's one thing we can't patch through the updater, so only completely new downloads will have it.

Best thing to do is to uninstall the game, then go to the directory where the game WAS installed and delete all the leftover files and folders. There will be a lot of them. When the game's folder is completely, absolutely empty, and you're sure it's all gone, then you can install the game again.

I'll send you a new download link with the improved uninstaller which should make this problem less likely in the future.

:C ahhh yeah, I tried to downgrade after it stopped working but that made it completely crash.

I'll be sure to ask before uninstalling in the future too D: thank you!

#15 by hanako - Mar 16 2011

No problem, we didn't realise at first what a mess downgrading was going to create. We may disable that feature entirely considering the problems it causes! (At the moment we're trying to see what can be done to make it less hazardous.)

#16 by PennyFaust - Mar 16 2011

So, I deleted all the old files and folders and such and reinstalled the game from the link emailed to me but the game crashed the moment I tried to run it again :C I managed to send a bug report and tried to downgrade once again since it was having trouble, but then it crashed completely and now it wont open once again.

Sorry for all the trouble, I'm probably missing something important |D; I didn't uninstall it this time though, so hopefully it can be fixed? D:

Do not downgrade during development unless specifically told by me or Spiky to do so. It WILL break your game.

There is probably never going to be a situation while we're in preorder status in which downgrading is a good idea. We shouldn't have enabled it at this point, and there are going to be big warning messages on it telling you not to do it as soon as we finish the current section of game so that we can release new patches to turn that thing off.

Because any bug you encounter during development is something that needs to be fixed and will be fixed in newer versions, not older. There is no older more-stable version to downgrade to! There are only older, more-broken versions. When the game is finally released and has a properly stable version, there may be times where downgrading makes sense, if someone doesn't like a new update and wants to play the older version. Right now, no.

Downgrading will NOT fix any error you encounter. It will make it worse.

We can only fix your errors if you give us the exact error messages so we can work out what's gone wrong. Smile What log is created when it crashes?

PennyFaust

#18 by PennyFaust - Mar 16 2011

Ffff I'm sorry I keep messing up! The error I get when trying to open it is this:

The logfile 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Magical Diary - Horse Hall\MagicalDiary.exe.log' could not be opened: [Errno 13] Permission denied: 'C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Magical Diary - Horse Hall\\MagicalDiary.exe.log'

hanako

#19 by hanako - Mar 16 2011

Huh! That's interesting. Haven't seen that error before. Smile

Do you have a MagicalDiary.exe.log file in your game directory? If so, can you rename that file to something like "old.log" and then try to launch the game and see if you get a different error message?

If you don't see a file by that name in your game directory, what OS are you using?

PennyFaust

#20 by PennyFaust - Mar 16 2011

I looked all over the place but that file doesn't seem to exist on my computer D: All I found was:

magical_diary.rpyc.old
magical_diary.rpyc
magical_diary.rpa

I'm sure those are normal or something xD; but I'm posting them just in case.

As for my OS, its Windows 7

hanako

#21 by hanako - Mar 16 2011

siiiiiiiiigh. (Not at you. At Windows.)

It's entirely possible that being Vista/7, it is doing that thing where it hides files from you. Vista/7 has been known to lie outright, to keep files after you've deleted them, or to hide files in random places in order to try and stop users from messing with them. I have sometimes had to get users to install things in new directories with made up names just to get Vista to stop reading from files it was told to delete.

Check to be sure that there isn't a stray copy of the game or notepad still running in the task manager - the only reason I can think of off the top of my head for it not being able to open a logfile is if some other program has hold of the logfile.

Since you have the new installer you just downloaded, in this particular case it might be worth trying to uninstall it (then clean the directories out, then delete the directory just to be sure!) and reinstall it and see what happens. You may still get errors, but if you do, come tell us what they are and don't try to do anything else to fix them! Smile

:"D That seemed to do it! Thanks so much for all the help! Hopefully it will continue working C: If it crashes again or any other problems arise, I'll let you know.
