Big Steve patch now available

#1 by hanako - Feb 27 2012

A bunch of scenes involving Big Steve have been added, including the chance to encounter him at the final dance.

In keeping with his status as a sort-of hidden character, these scenes may not all be very easy to find, and at least one of them is intentionally going to trip you up the first time. Smile

I'll give you a hint for one of them - visit the arcade on the first weekend after Christmas Break.

To find the new content you probably want to start with a character save no later than the beginning of December, so that you can have the "bunny encounter" on the snowy weekend.

Please test out the new content and give comments and feedback. Some bits may not be final yet... this had been sitting on the shelf for a LONG time and may not quite have recaptured the mood.

What version were you on before updating?

flwriter124

#4 by flwriter124 - Feb 27 2012

i click updater, then enable beta versions, click to download the update, it acts like everythings fine and downloading but then that comes up, the game restarts without actually downloading it

Sorry for double posting, but I managed to get it to update by restarting and running the game as Admin. Embarassed

The "AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'filename'" error in warp.py is caused by a bug in the interaction between the UAC version of the updater and some experimental code (introduced in 1.0.21).

You should be able to work around the bug by either running the updater as Administrator or by finding and deleting the file 'dlc.rpyc' before running the updater. Once you update to 1.0.30 (currently in alpha) you should be able to update normally to future versions.

I have played most of it, You and Big Steve go to the food court and notice that the bakery closed down. But then you go I think the next Saturday and Virginia telles you about the bakery, and Mary Sue acts af if she didn't know it. Just that, I find it a little strange, but the rest is excellent.

EDIT: I hace completed it now!!! OMG! He's adorable, it looks like he's not used to that but that he likes you too, but There isn't a way where you can dance with him right?. I loved it!

Y aunque nunca volverás, busco en el trastero de mi
ese beso abandonado que nunca te di."

Yay!

EDIT: OMG, the new scenes are SO cute. Mr. Hoppity, I love Mr. Hoppity. And Big Steve's ball attire, awesome!

Quick question: How many times do you have to visit the bakery to keep it from closing down? I'd like to know so I can update my walkthrough.

Thinking of Big Steve at Christmas time actually made me *squee* out loud. That's just embarrassing... Laughing

I do think it might be nice if you can send Mr Hoppity a Valentine as well as Big Steve. I think by that point MS would realise that that would go down well with Steve?

I do think the tone works, both for him and into the game as a whole - he's so very awkward and sweet, but it still feels genuine and understandable. It feels like he's rather taken aback that MS has gone to so much trouble to keep seeking him out and he's REALLY not used to that, but he wants to try. And I think she strikes a good tone of flirty and encouraging without pushing him too far too fast.

LOVE his outfit for the dance!! Ha!

I'm so glad this was added in - it's so adorable. Though my heart broke a little at probably not seeing him again... Was there something else I could have done?! Why won't he love me more? Smile *ahem* Thank you Hanako et al!

** I did notice that Farspeech gets called Farspeak as well (in the final exam) if that matters?

Oki

#12 by Oki - Feb 29 2012

I'm actually pretty disappointed. The minor flirting didn't make up for what felt like 60% mean ness. I've actually kind of lost some love for the game after it. I felt like Steve's stress didn't match up with anything we'd seen from anything else, he is especially disinterested and always has an excuse for being rude to you. So maybe I'm the only one, but I feel a little let down overall. The moods sort of wonky.

I'm really really sorry I sounded overly justifying here! Plz no hate me? Smile

ElCantardelaLunaOscura:

Yeah, that Virginia convo shouldn't happen if you already had the other one. Will be fixed at some point. (things a bit mixed up at the moment due to net problems)

Also yes, you can dance with him and get a photo at the end, but you have to have managed the successful coffee outing first. But no passionate romance, because this is still a tiny side thing and not a real path. Smile

As for FantasyFan's question: Five.

Oki

#14 by Oki - Feb 29 2012

Well, you asked for feedback. I'm a lot less likely to give it if I just get excused and long paragraphs of explanation. We can't all like it, and what good is feedback if it's all the same?

That being said, I'm gonna go save the bakery now.
I've been here so long even Hanako is sick of me

hanako

#15 by hanako - Feb 29 2012

I'm not telling you not to give feedback, your feedback was good! I appreciate your feedback, I thought you would feel ignored if I didn't answer and that that would make you feel less inclined to respond in the future.

I am absolutely positively not ordering you to like things you don't like, for goodness sake, it's *good* if people like different things. Since this is a stage at which things I've written may still end up being changed, it's definitely useful to see multiple opinions - but it's also a stage where I'm likely to explain what I was trying to do in order to provide a basis for evaluation.

*sigh*

look, I'm having a really rough week here, okay? Apologies in advance for being a serious grouch right now. But please feel free to argue with me!

mouse_girl

#16 by mouse_girl - Feb 29 2012

I enjoyed the extra content with him. My favorite scene was probably having coffee with him at the mall he was so adorable. Very Happy

Not sure if this would be spoilerish so I whited it out.
At the end during the dance is there anyway to offer to keep in touch writing letters? (Not sure if that would work though since he said he's going to the Otherworld to start training.) I felt sad that I "probably" wouldn't be able to see him again after we started being friends.

hanako

#17 by hanako - Feb 29 2012

Yeah, I wasn't sure if I should put something like that in or not. I didn't want it to feel too much like the resolutions of some of the other paths.

I can see ways it might happen, but I think for the moment I'm leaning towards not giving any specifics as to whether or how you might communicate with him again.

ZOMG Big Steve!

I don't really have anything constructive to say, I'm just so excited to finally get my Sue to pursue that adorable, socially awkward, introvert. *happy dance*

Edited to Include: I'm having some problems with installing the new updates. I had to get a new computer so I had lost my old install and saves. When I try to update I'm told I need the 0.2.82.2 first (the game is at default 0.2.76) but I don't have that option. I can only go directly to 1.0.18.1 which doesn't include the needed earlier update.

That was really confusing wasn't it?

hanako

#19 by hanako - Feb 29 2012

Trying to update from something WAY back in alpha is probably going to explode, yeah. You need a newer installer. Smile

Contact me by PM or email with the name and email address you bought under (or the 'Order ID', but not the 'Product ID' because the product id just says what game it was, which doesn't help Smile ) and I can find your order and press the button to get you a new download.

Oops - my fault. (I left the 0.x directory out when moving the updater onto the new patch server, because it was four and a half gigs and I thought everyone had updated to 1.x by then. But 0.2.82.2 itself is a manageable size, so it's up.)

You should now be able to download 0.2.82.2 when the updater prompts you to; once that's done, you'll need to update again to beta 1.0.30 to get the new Big Steve scenes. If it still doesn't work, Hanako can send you a new installer.

Oki:

It's interesting that it could be read as meanness - I read it completely as socially awkward and so utterly at a loss what to do with this chatty thing that wants to be friends. Smile I think maybe I read it like this though as I'm socially awkward and my reflex response would be to disappear too!

I might play again and read it through differently! It makes it more fun I think, that it can work on either level.

FantasyFan

#22 by FantasyFan - Feb 29 2012

Given that I tend to be a socially awkward type in real life, I didn't see any of it as mean - he just has trouble interacting with people. That's what makes him an interesting character. Like how he doesn't really know what to do when Mary Sue gives him Mr. Hoppity, and how he seems to prefer Mr. Hoppity's company to anyone else's - it's because he's not comfortable in social situations, not because he's mean.

So I've done the Steve content twice so far. The first time I forgot what store was going under so I didn't save it and I think I scared him off by being too romantic. The second time I saved the pastry shop and went the funny route and oh, it broke my heart right into little pieces after I got the dance and Mr. Hoppity and the picture/yearbook entry.

Excellent job Hanako, I really loved that. I've enjoyed both variations so much. Exactly what I was hoping for in a small side romance with Big Steve. He's so adorably awkward and worth the effort of breaking through that defensive, panicky shell. Very Happy

Big Steve is officially tied with Donald in my book. He'd have beaten him, if it was a full route romance, but I loved this little side romance so much. Definitely worth the wait.

Have you visited the pastry shop at least five times to keep it from closing down?

Just letting you know that when I went to show a friend how to update the game, going all the way to "check for updates", I pressed "return" and went to let her start a new game to try it and an error occurred.

I closed the game and had no problems, so the problem was only when I did that specific sequence.

Other than that, LOVING THIS.

Yay Big Steve! Just played it through but had NO idea about the bakery so I didn't get his full route Sad shouldn't he tell you at some point or did I just miss it? I will try again another time to get the full ending since I just love Big Steve and Mr Hoppity so much! Very Happy

Personally, I loved Big Steve's path. Smile

It took me two play-throughs to get the dance pictures though because I didn't know about the bakery thing but I finally got it. Tip: Go to the food court at the mall and order a pastry at least five times before your coffee date with him. Wink

I also really like how he had two different pictures (one where you're holding Mister Hoppity and another where Mister Hoppity is on Big Steve's shoulder). Smile

I noticed that after you can still play the grab machine after you get Big Steve to win the bunny, if you give it to him. So, I decided to try and get the bunny and you can get it. You can and if you do it is possible for both of you to have the bunny in the dance pic! I really loved Big Steve, he is my favorite, and I was sad that I probably wouldn't see him again. I'd like to know more about him in general. I'm kinda hoping for a continuation into the next year.

Your Welcome.
It was no trouble really, Big Steve is my favorite character, even if you can't actually "date" him. (as far as the romances go I like Grabiner the most.) I'm really curious about the toad hall boys. Balthazar intrigues me as well but you only get to talk to him once, at the lake party and only if you introduce Damien to Virginia and don't go with her for food.

thezooqueen

#38 by thezooqueen - Sep 13 2012

Hehe yes I agree. Grabiner is my favorite also. That is why I am writing a fanfic about him and "Mary"

Aya

#39 by Aya - Sep 13 2012

I'll have to check that out when you're done with it.
I had hoped that if I had to stay for summer school that the conversation with Grabiner the night of the ball would change, so that instead of her saying she'd miss him over the summer that they could spend time together, but it didn't happen that way. Crying or Very sad
I've been debating on whether or not to write one for Big Steve.

thezooqueen

#40 by thezooqueen - Sep 13 2012

Thanks I have chapter 1 and 2 up in the fanfic section ;)

Aya

#41 by Aya - Sep 13 2012

I wish there was an option so that if you gave Big Steve the bunny and later obtained one for yourself that when Big Steve offers you Mr. Hoppity at the dance that you could exchange bunnies with him, so that you end up with Mr. Hoppity and Big Steve gets the one you've been carrying around all year.

thezooqueen

#42 by thezooqueen - Sep 13 2012
