Evil Scientist options?

I was wondering if Sophia, the guard at the frontier, actually does anything about the evil scientist. When you report to her, she says she'll send in a unit to investigate, but then what? Are you ever invited? Does anything happen? If you kill or let the scientist escape, she's just unhappy, but that's it..?

Sophia did not seem unhappy. She gave me a present.

SOPHIA: Oh, well. Take this as a reward for your bravery in tackling the situation.

*Sophia hands you a polished sword.*

Has anyone been able to get the scientist in for questioning

Seems a shame to kill her. I let her go but didn't get rewarded, of course!
