Question: Combat Mechanics

Question: Combat Mechanics

#1 by bl_onyx - Dec 2 2009

I am having a good time crawling the dungeon, but I am left with a number of questions regarding the combat mechanics.

What I have figured out sofar:

strength = +damage , + attack training
luck = +critical hit? + dodge? +item drops?
, + defense training
attack = +to hit
defense = + dodge -damage taken?
resist = damage blocked
maxdamage = + damage

It seems that you boost each stat by a max of 100,
resist maxes out at 10.

My questions:
What is the exact role of LUCK in combat?
What is the exact role of DEFENSE in combat?
What is the role of MAXDAMAGE, or how is damage calculated.
damage is often higher than MAXDAMAGE, and damage is positive even when I have a MAXDAMAGE = 0 (bouquet, pencil, shell wand)

Weapons in the game do variable damage - for instance, a weapon might do 1-8 points of damage. In that case, the weapon's max damage is 8 points.

However, in combat, you get a strength bonus added to that, because if you're very strong you can hit harder. And when you get a lucky strike, you also get a luck bonus added to it. So your actual damage is often higher than the weapon's maxdamage rating.

If you have no weapon equipped, or something useless like a bouquet, assume you're just punching the monster. You'll still do damage based on your luck and strength.

It might just be subjective, but it seems to me that high Luck increases the amount of times you run into a shadow on the overland map and it's not actually an enemy.

Not exactly, but it does affect how often those non-enemy encounters will turn out to have treasure.

Am I correct in that it also effects if monsters drop loot or not?

Just so's I don't waste time doing a luck = 50 vs a luck = 100 loot list and it's really just random. Laughing
Why oh why do I spend so much time on life sims?
....
Oh, cause they're cute.
And fun. Oh, and oh yeah, I have no life besides work and games. Ahh.

No, a monster's loot chances are defined on the monster, your luck doesn't affect that.

Surprised Surprised Hot DAMN! I'll be done by the end of next week then!!!

And does spell damage go up with int? or just with Magic?

Not that I would ever cheese some basic answers off of you to save myself extra work. *coughs*

I probably would have been silly and done the battles with 50 luck just to see if it lowered the drops, then decided it did... XD Because that's my luck.

Magic affects the damage, Mind just controls your max MP.
