Bought through steam - game does not start

Hi all,

wish I could be more helpful than the topic, but I click start through steam, or double-click the exe in the folder. The blue circle of 'doing something' spins for about 5-10 seconds, then nothing. I don't see a science girls process started anywhere, anything to indicate a crash/failure, nothing..

Running Windows 7, 64 bit, 12GB memory.. happy to help any troubleshooting suggestions..

I'm not sure why it's failing, but the sound debugging instructions may help.

Do you have a 0-byte pysdlsound.fail file in %APPDATA%\RenPy\science_girls\ ? (If yes, that tells me something about how far it's getting)

There's a test app to help track crash bugs at http://spikycaterpillar.com/diagnostics/Test-6.9.2a+.zip . If you run it, it'll try to bring up a blank Ren'Py game that will log a pile of information to Test-6.9.2a.exe.log .

You can also try starting with sound disabled as follows:
Start a command prompt
cd to the directory Science Girls is in. If it works with both pss and mix disabled but crashes otherwise, then it's a sound bug in a slightly different place and I need to adjust the existing workaround.

hmm, this could be the first piece of the puzzle - I don't even have a renpy folder under appdata.. Could it be something to do with that I install my steam stuff onto e: instead of c:?

EDIT: Stupid windows 7 search didn't throw up the renpy folder. I have the one in the SG app folder, but not anywhere else..

Looks like it's crashing somewhere in graphics initialization; I've added a bit more logging to the test app (still at http://spikycaterpillar.com/diagnostics/Test-6.9.2a+.zip )

What resolution and colour depth is your monitor at? Do you have any unusual hardware connected?

There's also a chance that updating DirectX 9 (Available from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35 ) may fix it.

well that's interesting, we have progress here - I got the basic front-end menu popping up this time.

Monitor is 1920x1080, 32 bit color depth. Nothing weird connected that I can think of, my UPS is about the strangest device on my rig...

ooh, update that I REALLY should have thought of checking before posting the above.... retried the game, and now it works! (Or at least, a very quick double click got me to a menu screen, which is vastly further along than last time!)

I'll poke about a bit tomorrow when I have some time and let you know.

HUGE props for your support and engagement. So nice to see a dev that actually cares about his game, and his audience base - you've just won yourself a long-term supporter, Mr. Caterpillar

Sad to say, not a thing. If anything, I realised in hindsight I was even luckier than I thought - if it was a graphics problem, then the second time I ran it out of interest, I had a number of other programs running, including some games that I would have thought had grabbed control of the video card..

Although I note that now, magically I DO have an %APP_DATA%/renpy folder.. wonder if a windows update, or a delayed install piece of steam, or running the test app, could have caused this to sort itself out?

The test app couldn't (IMO) have fixed it, unless win7 is doing truly weird things under the hood. Steam or Windows updates could have fixed it; it's also possible that some other running app tweaked your driver state slightly.

I suspect the reason %APPDATA%\RenPy didn't exist at first was most likely that the game crashed before getting to the point where it creates it.
